Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel

You can push play on both of these at the same time:

Gotta get Mike Gravel to show up on Dome Nation, what questions should we ask him?

Ask him to expand on the idea that US doesn't really have justification for remaining on a permanent war footing.

Re: Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel (none / 0)

I got im'd some q's:

what's with the fog horns in the forest while Mike's watching a camp fire?

Are they making a statement about rising sea levels due to global warming?

Does the fire symbolize our loss of technology due to environmental degradation?

Re: Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel (3.00 / 1)

the fire symbolize the burning rage for change as they support the ultimate DC insider candidate.

the foghorn symbolizes the call for change as they support the establishment candidate

and the rock in the water symbolizes the imminent change we will creat in DC by nominating Hillary.

oh wait that doesn't make any sense

ask him to stare at the camera for a long time then walk over and throw your republican co-host over the balcony.

I didn't get it (none / 0)

it's almost a spoof of a SNL segment without the humor....

Can't gravel and kucinich just pick one of them to show up at debates?

Clueless here... (none / 0)

If there's a message in there, I missed it.

Fog horns warn ships off of shaols.
Fire beats paper.

Haven't a clue.

Re: Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel (2.00 / 1)

In My Best Fiend, Werner Herzog says,

Taking a close look at what's around us, there is some sort of harmony. It's the harmony of overwhelming and collective murder. But when I say this, I say this all full of admiration for the jungle. It's not that I hate it. I love it. I love it very much. But I love it against my better judgment.

Does this reflect your feelings about politics?

or

Do you look to Kinski for inspiration in politics, or only in acting?

You are all wrong. These are clearly old advertisements for the first generation Infiniti, minus the voice-overs.

Re: Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel (3.00 / 1)

My interpretation:

Video 1: Gravel is starting a fire in America. The fire of change.
Video 2, Act 1: Gravel is confronting America with his clarity, honesty and sincerity. He's looking silently into the soul of each American and wants you to look deeply, deeply into his.
Video 2, Act 2: Gravel is throwing a big, disruptive rock into the placid pond of American political discourse and generating ripples of enlightenment all over the US of A.

Brilliant...It's the anti-commercial!I don't know about you. But I'm convinced. Mike Gravel -- please be my president! Burn me up with your fire of change!!!

It's fun seeing other commenters' hostility to slowing down for a moment and being forced to think and listen.

all I can think about... (none / 0)

after watching those is the poem from Wings of Desire.

"Als das Kind Kind war,
ging es mit hängenden Armen,
wollte der Bach sei ein Fluß,
der Fluß sei ein Strom,
und diese Pfütze das Meer"

(English:
"When the child was a child
It walked with its arms swinging,
wanted the brook to be a river,
the river to be a torrent,
and this puddle to be the sea.)

And, from another part of the poem:

English:
"When the child was a child,
It was the time for these questions:
Why am I me, and why not you?
Why am I here, and why not there?
When did time begin, and where does space end?
Is life under the sun not just a dream?
Is what I see and hear and smell
not just an illusion of a world before the world?
Given the facts of evil and people.
does evil really exist?
How can it be that I, who I am,
didn't exist before I came to be,
and that, someday, I, who I am,
will no longer be who I am?"

Cool, the first existentialist candidate!

I kept waiting for the dude that comes out of the woods at the end of the first video to mug Gravel. But it never happened.

Ask him about Hillary and Marriage Equality.

It will be worth it, trust me.

who cares? (none / 0)

seriously, who cares?

this guy is going nowhere fast, has nothing to lose by "talking big" and would be a disaster worse than Bush if he somehow lucked into the job.

then again, we have the looming disaster of Hillary "Let's Be In Iraq for 8+ more years to prove I've got the chops to shoot guns at brown people" Clinton and the rest......hmm...

still, who cares? he and denny kucinch can take turns on the bong, talking big talk....it'll make the feel good wing of the Democratic Party have fun!

Re: Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel (none / 0)

Ask him about the National Initiative For Democracy. That's ostensibly one of the reasons why he's running -- to shed light on that cause.

http://www.ni4d.org/

It's an interesting idea, to say the least.

Since he's a long, long shot, other than winning the Democratic presidency, what else would he like to advance or gain from his candidacy?

And...will he support whoever the nominee is?

Jon Stewart was right... I feel like I'm going to die in six days.

Kind of weird.  I wonder how that is supposed to catch peoples attention.

Re: Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel (none / 0)

I have suggestions for the next two of the Empedoclean short film series that Gravel will use to become President of the Universe.

#3:  Wherein Gravel digs a ten foot deep hole in the ground, climbs in, looks up at the camera for 5 minutes.

#4: Gravel intones vowel sounds into a running fan, includes, "And sometimes Y."

Re: Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel (none / 0)

Chris Matthews said he's going to ask the Democratic candidates,

Which government agency would you do away with?

Gravel might be the only one bold enough to say,

The Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Because of Gravel's potential answer, it's doubtful that Chris Matthews will ask that question.

None of the other Democratic candidates would have the nerve to say that except perhaps for Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM).

Re: Fire, Ripples, and Mike Gravel (3.00 / 1)

I think perhaps the most interesting thing about these videos is the fact that they've gotten people talking.  I could sit here and analyze them both about what they symbolize or represent but thats all speculation.

What I do know is that if you watch them with an eye towards expecting some big statement, you'll probably get frustrated.  But if you just sit back and watch them - they're pretty zen.

And I know that my office spent the better part of an hour talking about Mike Gravel for good or ill after watching them - which by some metric means they are a success.
