Fred Thompson To Form Exploratory Committee

The Republican field becomes even more muddled:

We've now confirmed that former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson is taking formal steps toward a presidential bid, through the formation next week of a "testing-the-waters" committee that will allow him to do some fundraising.

According to a Thompson adviser who has been helping him in this early stages, the senator and lead actor on "Law & Order" will be helped in fundraising through supporters of his who have dubbed themselves "First Day Founders." The "testing the waters" committee is not as stringently regulated as a formal exploratory committee, he said, so that Mr. Thompson can complete some of his private speaking engagements and continue with his NBC contract, at least in the short term while he is still not an announced candidate.

Without even announcing, Thompson has reached double-digits nationally. It will be interesting to see if this announcement boosts him even further. Given current Republican dissatisfaction with their announced candidates, he certainly has a lot of potential in this campaign. The Republican top tier now includes four candidates.

I do agree with the Bill Maher analogy about Thompson, "basset hound", but I do agree that he is electable with bullshit and all.

He is just enough to appeal to independent voters, revive the Republican base, he is a conservative (not Bush), and he is a good speaker. He will have enough charisma to become likeable to undecided voters.

It is up to the democrats in who we want to cast in our play, and the last casting call was atrocious with Kerry. He was a snooze. I remember when he went to an African American church of bishops while running, giving his pitch, and the minister said, "when are you going to fire up the base". And he didn't. He was one vote that was cast with a nose up, for real. Do we want this again?

Whomever we cast this time, better win, outright, with no bullshit attached, and can pull indies and repubs, period.

What will happen is the wingnut vote is going to get split about 6 different ways, and "Sir Rudy" is going to win the nomination. He is a much harder beat than any of the other GOP candidates because Americans' have a warped view of him given the glowing press he got (and still gets - Chris Matthews wants to blow him) after 9/11.

Rudy is beatable but it makes sense for Democrats to start shining the bright light on him now. So far he has gotten pretty much a free pass from our side.

Thompson is attractive because he's a fresh face. The best thing possible is to get him into the mix as soon as possible, so that he can begin to wilt before people go to the voting booth.

I saw a Law and Order rerun last night. And he was just so convincing spouting cya nonsense at Jack McCoy. All along I was thinking, "This guy is no actor at all. This is the real Fred Thompson."

And it's true. He's an excellent GOP candidate, an authoritarian grandfather figure who spouts utter nonsense in assertive tones of exasperated outrage.

Let them flock to him as a saviour figure. But soon, please. Because the one thing that he cannot stand is scrutiny. Now, we know from past experience that he won't get much of that from the M$M. But it won't take much--especially once the blogosphere and YouTube, etc. get into the mix.

It is only in total bubble-land that Thompson looks so formidable. And so long as he's not really a candidate, his residence in bubble-land is secure.

I've seen some episodes of law and order, but never noticed him...Anyway, Fred looks very boring, no charisma and he's bold and look kind of old...I dont know how much that would play out....If Romney wasnt such a flip flopper and wasnt a mormon, he would have been a shoe in candidate for the nomination because he has the hair, the looks and he's an okay speaker unlike McCain,Giuliani and fred.

I think he's getting in this early because he's afraid if he doesn't, the party will become happy with their field after all, given the myraid of "presidential" performances in the debates from folks like Huckabee and Romney. Fred thought he could wait like Gore can, but oops, not so much. It's now or never, do-or-die for Fred.

I think that this guy is a big fat phony, and has a lot of negatives. He will look good, but ultimately will not go anywhere.

Don't over-estimate his appeal. He is an actor, and can be demonized as such. he don't know shit about shinola.

Republicans do not have a problem voting for actors and never have had a problem voting for actors. The anti-actor thing only applies to liberal actors, not conservative ones.

Republicans also do not have a problem voting for people who "don't know shit about shinola". One only needs to look at our current President to make the case, but if that's not convincing enough, suitable examples can be plucked from the last 6 years of both the House and the Senate.

Don't underestimate Thompson -- he's a bullshit artist who looks like a Daddy and once played the President in a movie about nukes. That mixed with a generally conservative, pro-corporatist worldview and no outstanding votes in favor of women's rights will get him far in the primary. All he needs to do is promise to torture Arab-looking people with impunity when confronted with a highly improbably situation, and he'll be all set to climb to the Presidency.

(That said, I agree - he's got a lot of negatives. And I think that once the GOPer base start really looking at him, they'll decide they don't like him. I'm sure there's something in his voting record that Dobson will condemn, or if not, then maybe he has some gay friends that Dobson will attack him through.)

I think the base will vote for him, period. And if he can give rhetoric about bringing the troops home in a timely fashion, UNLIKE, the current Republican lot, he can get this nomination.

He is grandfatherly, and is full of bullshit, but look at GWB and he was put in their twice.

The only thing he has really is "likeability" Edwards and especially Obama would be jsut as "likeable" and the race would turn on issues which we would win, since I think Fred is the favorite now, I really hope dems will put a mental picture of a Thompson/Hillary debate in thier heads.

Thompson says this because the 30 percenters in his camp are in denial about Iraq. They have to believe that conservatives "stayed home" when in fact they did not.

If he wants it bad enough & really fights, I'll make a fearless prediction that Fred Thompson will be the Republican nominee. Can we beat him? Sure, but finally the Republicans have a candidate who can unite them. Thompson sure can play the role.
