Disappointing the Base Day

Well we knew that we wouldn't get what we wanted in 2006.  Here was my prediction.  This is a multi-cycle challenge, with the need for progressive primary challenges years into the future.  Shelley Berkeley, Howard Berman, and Steny Hoyer are particularly bad, and though I have no idea if any of them are vulnerable to a progressive challenger in their district, I would support such a challenger if one arose.

Meanwhile, all we can do is make lists of those who betray their constituents.  Afro-netizen was leaked a letter from 26 CBC members imploring Obama, Edwards, and Clinton to attend the Fox News-CBCi debate.  Color of Change listed them in the comments.

Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick
Bennie Thompson
James Clyburn
Sanford Bishop
G.K. Butterfield
Mel Watt
Danny Davis
John Lewis
Keith Ellison
Charles Rangel
Eddie Bernice Johnson
Stephanie Tubbs Jones
Sheila Jackson Lee
Donna Christian-Christensen
Diane Watson
Al Wynn
Elijah Cummings
David Scott
Yvette Clarke
John Conyers
Hank Johnson
Al Green
Corrine Brown

As Hoyer, Pelosi, Emanuel, Slaughter and Clyburn rig the rules in the House to force a blank check through Congress, we should remember.  This is a betrayal.  This is the same betrayal as 26 CBC members (19 or whom are progressive caucus members) who want our candidates to debate on Fox News, a Republican propaganda outlet.  They value their insider status and connections more than the will of the public or the people they represent.

We knew this would happen.  Our political system has been corroded by 60 years of fear-mongering, and it's not going to be cleaned out with one election cycle.  As we work to clean it up, though, we need to keep good notes.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

As noted before, one of the biggest betrayals was by presumed progressive Udall (CfS-CO) (that's Coloradans for Salazar).  As he makes a mad dash to the center-right, Udall abandons all principle--thus suggesting that he lacked it in the first place.

This war was a watershed issue for many of us in the 2004 Presidential primary.  We rejected Kerry's lame-ass excuse that he wouldn't have voted for the AUMF if he had had correct info.  The war remains a watershed issue for many progressives in Colorado, and I won't forget Udall's betrayal when it comes time to vote (or not) for Senator in 2008.  I continue to think Sirota's right--we need to actually clean house WITHIN the Democratic Party before we can block things like the blank check, much less enact even part of a progressive agenda.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

Big difference between your vote in the primary and your vote in the general.  If you think Udall is bad, what do you expect from his eventual Republican opponent?

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

Considering how crazy the only republican to have thrown their hat in the ring (after drafting of less crazy candidates by republicans failed) is, I'd say he'd be pretty bad.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

No doubt, I will bite my tongue and vote for Udall against whatever far-right lunatic ends up opposing him in the general.  That does not mean that he should get away with portraying himself as a progressive, or as a politician with a conscience.  He is clearly willing to abandon principle when it is politically expedient to do so.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

Before we head down the Howard Dean/Ned Lamont road to victory, is it possible for us to take a step back and recognize that there is a distinction between the Joe Lieberman Democrats and those who are either running in competitive or "red state" jurisdictions?  Does anyone really think that red state general election voters in AR, FL, VA, CO or NV, who will matter if we are to elect a Dem President and keep at least one chamber, won't be susceptible to GOP line that defunding the troops is a bad idea?

I agree.  Unfortunately, some people here live in la-la-land.

I never could find the signature page of the letter. All that is shown is the first page.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (3.00 / 0)

Ellison? I'm very disappointed. He's campaigned on a progressive populist peace platform. I can't believe he'd sign on to that.

I'm going to contact him.

not only that, but (none / 0)

how many hatchet jobs on Keith Ellison did Fox "News" broadcast earlier this year? Wow, that guy is not a quick study.

Say it over and over again (none / 0)

"Democratic presidential candidates will debate on Fox when Republican candidates debate on Air America."

who in the CBC did not sign the letter? (none / 0)

Was there anyone? Pardon my ignorance, I have no idea how many members the CBC has.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

Hmm.I've never liked Shelley Berkley's support for getting rid of the inheritance tax, but at least when I criticize her, I spell her name correctly.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

Unfortunately, as we expand our base beyond the states that have been consistently Democratic in the past 4 presidential elections or so, we'll have to take out some other incumbents as well--or at the least request that they stop voting against us on every major issue.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

Hmmm, so the fact that most CBC members voted against the Iraq resolution, voted for hard deadline and will vote against the supplemental isn't what's important.

The fact that they represent voters who support Dems w/85% of the vote or more typically and therefore want to have more than one debate is irrelevant if they allow Fox to sponsor?  Have all the Dem candidates decided that they won't solicit Fox to cover their events or are we saying the next Dem prez shouldn't use the most direct channel to talk to convservative voters?

If I recall correctly Kucinich was also in favor of the Fox debates and he is another member of the Progressive Caucus.

Re: Disappointing the Base Day (none / 0)

I was thinking less of the CBC members (admittedly, the point of this post) than other DINOs like Ben Nelson.
