Larry Kissell, Brad Miller and Elizabeth Dole

This post just had more and more to report on.  Sorry for the multiple topics.

As many of you know we have been pushing for a top tier challenger to Elizabeth Dole for US Senate.  Well, it has been a busy week.

Wednesday there was a story on the News & Observer's blog about our website.

Then yesterday we had two big boosts.  The first came, oddly, in the form of a poll about a different potential challenger to Dole.  That poll showed a surprising result, with a generic Democrat leading a generic Republican in the Presidential race in North Carolina 47 to 42.

The second came when I emailed this guy you might have heard of that I worked for for a few weeks in the fall last year.

"That guy" is none other than Larry Kissell.  Larry had this to say about Brad and a Senate run:

I would support Brad if he choses to run, the sooner the better.

I agree with Larry, the sooner the better.

Unlike in 2006, when Larry was the top of the ticket, his fate in 2008 will be affected by the Senate race, by the fight for the White House, and maybe even by the Governor's race.

Thankfully we look really good in the Governor's race with 2 strong, well funded Democratic challengers facing off for the right to beat up on one of three crazy wingnuts.

What does the last Democrat to win a Senate campaign in North Carolina have to say about our chances in 2008?

"Im gonna campaign in North Carolina no matter when the primary is.  Im running a national campaign."

That quote is a small line in a 2 minute video

Larry's fight will not be easy.  I hope you will think of sending him some love on ActBlue, and I hope you will think about sending a few bucks Brad's way while you are there to encourage him to run.

In 2008 Larry will replace Robin Hayes.  And, we will turn North Carolina a deep shade of Blue.  But, we need your help to get it done.

Before "going to press" another article about Brad showed up online.  From Reuters comes this story about Exxon and Greenpeace

The story focuses upon a recent report by Greenpeace.  As most of you probably know, Exxon has been funding "skeptics" of climate change for years.  Under mounting growing pressure they claimed they were going to stop this practice.  This new report challenges the assertions that they have stopped.  Obviously Exxon and Greenpeace would probably never agree on anything, but Brad's position is a pretty sane one in my opinion.

"The support of climate skeptics, many of whom have no real grounding in climate science, appears to be an effort to distort public discussion about global warming," Miller said. "So long as popular discussion could be about whether warming was occurring or not, so long as doubt was widespread, consensus for action could be postponed."
emphasis mine

Brad, as chair of a Science Subcommittee has made a fairly innocuous request for Exxon to simply release its contribution records, and plans for future contributions.  There are no threats by Brad, simply a request.  If Exxon wishes to prove their assertion that their position on global warming is "misunderstood", then releasing this information would go a long way towards gaining some public trust.

Overnight, the big news is that the US Attorney Scandal has hit home in NC.  This excellent article from the Greensboro News-Record details the fact that the head prosecutor for that part of the state was on the newly disclosed longer firing list.

The reporter interviewed the Prosecutor who was appointed with the help of Jesse Helms during the Reagan administration, and the prosecutor under Clinton.

"It's a political process to get the job," acknowledged Walter Holton Jr. , who was U.S. attorney for the Middle District from 1994 through 2001. "But once you get the job, you're confirmed by the Senate, the politics stops."
:::
"She's doing a great job, that's what's so absurd about this," Holton said. "In all these cases, there doesn't seem to be any merit to why people were or were not on a certain list."

Even Republican House Member Howard Coble thinks there was no reason to get rid of her, or even to consider it.  But Brad Miller's comments are great,

"I want to know why Ms. Wagoner was on the list in the first place," said Rep. Brad Miller , a Raleigh Democrat who represents parts of Greensboro. Miller said it appeared prosecutors got in trouble for pursuing corruption cases against Republicans or not bringing cases against Democrats.

"From the point of view of someone who is in politics as a Democrat, that's terrifying," Miller said.

So there you go.  Larry endorses Brad, Brad protects the environment, and the attorney scandal hits home.  Thanks for reading.

Re: Larry Kissell, Brad Miller and Elizabeth Dole (none / 0)

Since Brad Miller supports John Edwards, would Larry support John Edwards?

Re: Larry Kissell, Brad Miller and Elizabeth Dole (none / 0)

I cant speak for him or his campaign, but I was at the rally where John endorsed Larry in 2006.

Given the fact that all 7 incumbent US House members in NC have endorsed John Edwards, and Marshall Adame who is running in NC-03 against Walter Jones has also endorsed him, I wouldnt be surprised if Larry supports John.  But I dont know there has been anything formal on that.
