Open Thread

I am on the road today, but I will be back tomorrow morning with a huge piece of info that could shake up perceptions of the 2008 campaign. Stay tuned...

In the meantime, tell the world what is on your mind.

Update [2007-5-17 10:40:48 by Matt Stoller]: I am also on the road today, but I wanted to leave you with this post from Carl Pope of the Sierra Club on the trade deal. I basically agree with him.

Will the tectonic plates shift?

Just curious ... anyone else understand that tectonic plates reference, or is it too obscure now?

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

My Jr. High science teacher told us that plate tectonics was just a theory.

Re: Tectonics... (none / 0)

Atrios was needling Josh over this a week or two ago, so it's still a live reference at least in bloggy circles.

How's this for a soundbite? (none / 0)

The US Attorneys are America's immune system.

What does that make Alberto Gonzales?

Time for idle speculation (none / 0)

Might it be Gore-related? That would be the only "huge" thing I can think of, and right now the default position is that Gore is NOT running, so final confirmation of that wouldn't be all that earthshaking...

Or maybe someone's dropping out? But unless it's Obama or Edwards, it wouldn't be too tectonic...

Shaking up perceptions (none / 0)

(My D'oh comment below was intended to be a reply to your post.)

The mass perception is that Hillary's got a commanding lead.

Chris is referring to perceptions being "shaken up".

A man can base a hope upon anything he wants to.

The tease! I can't take it!

Gotta go off to work now. Been in Panera waiting out the traffic. Maybe that'll get my mind off this...

Re: Time for idle speculation (none / 0)

The recent Gore alumns gathering made it clear, he is not running.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

I would just to thank Ron Paul for his comments in the Republican debate earlier this week.  It was good to see someone challenge the orthodoxy that "they hate us because we're free" that is still used to explain 9/11 and everything after that tragic day.  I do have many questions and disputes with where Congressman Paul's ideas would ultimately lead America, I do think he should be praised for having the guts to offer some new ideas into a debate.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

Cheers to that! I really wish he had just asked Giuliani - "why do YOU think they attacked us?"
No one ever goes that far out of their way to cause death and destruction without a good reason. Oh, except for the invasion of Iraq...

Also - the thunderous applause after Giuliani pooped out his 9/11 bullshit - made me die a little inside.

I hope it is a hit on the campaign that hired some dipshit who thinks I'm such a pussy.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

Go to Hillary's site to vote on her campaign song.

I say we all vote for the most annoying song possible. Maybe Shania Twain? Or Smashmouth?

Hillary song. . . (none / 0)

Can suggest your own.

How about "The Party's Over". . .

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

Speaking of Earth-shaking news - what's everyone make of Bloomberg? Seems as if he very well may run.

Which could make for an interesting line-up (from Electoral-Vote.com):

  • A pro-choice, pro-gay, liberal New York Protestant (Clinton)
  • A pro-choice, pro-gay, liberal New York Catholic (Giuliani)
  • A pro-choice, pro-gay, liberal New York Jew (Bloomberg)
... Tell me THAT won't cause a Religious Right run - which would mean a FOURTH party run.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

He and Hagel don't really have any constituencies in the way the Nader and Perot did, so I'm not sure how many votes either would get outside of New York and Nebraska.  Surely Bloomberg could buy plenty of votes, but it looks like, from polls, that it would only hurt Giuliani or another Republican.  Interestingly, Rasmussen had McCain losing about as much as Giuliani would from a Bloomberg run.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

No doubt this would hurt Republicans.
And no doubt $1 billion can buy a lot of votes. Certainly not enough - but a lot!
