When I heard the news, my head exploded with strip ideas. I couldn't decide which to do so I put them in a short series.

One of the most hateful men in America is now dead. What are politicians saying?

Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country." Sen. John McCain

How did he serve? Teaching hate and intolerance to Americans under the guise of "religion."

"An American who built and led a movement based on strong principles and strong faith has left us." Mitt Romney

We all have great respect for him." Rudy Giuliani.

Uh, Rudy, some of us don't. Do you also respect Pol Pot? David Duke? Fred Phelps maybe?

Falwell will only be missed by the worst of us and you must be one of them.

To see the all four strips in the series hit the flip.

Jerry Falwell whitewash due? (3.00 / 0)

We are told to never speak ill of the dead but when did that stop anyone when the dead was a Saddam, Pol Pot or Cho Seung-hui.  To hear these politicians fawning over Falwell's legacy is a disgrace. We speak ill of the dead all the time...when we are honest!
What we are seeing is the end of a very distructive public life that raised up a generation of people who are perfectly comfortable with standing in judgement of others in the name of God while conveniently ignoring their own flaws. Religous elitism is no more a social virtue than a political or biological one. To praise such a life dedicated to furthering such a philosophy is an act of duplicity equal to his.
What bothers me most is guys like Al Sharpton, who has every reason to know how evil this man's tongue could be, talking about him as "really believing what he said" and "being a personable guy" or words to that effect.  Since when did "really believing what he said" make bigoty and scapegoating minorities a thing to be praised?  Should Caesar be comforted because Brutus greeted him with a smile?  Should we remember Gerald L.K. Smith for his Chist of the Ozarks statue and ignore the fact that he made his money as a professional anti-Semite?
And as for being a spokesman for God? NOT MY GOD! How was it that he never condemned divorce and putting money out at interest with the same vigor and vitriol that he attacked gays and liberals? Was this the result of some private revelation that the Bible really should not be taken as God's word too slavishly - that American mores and capitalism trumped Leviticus and Jesus' teaching - or just plain old political expediency wrapped in pious sheep's clothing?
In a recent interview Farwell says that he was praying for "twenty more years to complete my mission."  If we use the same tortued logic that he used to explain the 9/11 tragedy, maybe his sudden death is a signal that God does not want his mission finished. Does that make less sense than the ACLU helping al Qaeda bring down the WTC?
And finally, not being privy to God's bookkeeping I don't know who is "a man of God" and who is not, but being a minister myself, who has made plenty of mistakes, I would hope my life is adjudged good in spite of my flaws not because we conveniently sweep them under the rug.  An historical eulogy that cooks the books on a person is no more honest than an accountant who cooks the books before an audit.

Re: Jerry Falwell whitewash due? (none / 0)

Absolutely correct. Whitewashing Falwell's record helps no one. The targets of his hate need to speak out about his true nature.

Falwell was unprincipled, undemocratic, and fundamentally un-American.

More Falwell quotations here.
