An Announcement

I have a quick announcement to make to the MyDD community if you'll indulge me for a moment. I am excited to announce that starting next week I will be doing netroots consulting for Congressman Earl Blumenauer, my representative here in Oregon's third congressional district.

You may know Earl from his blogging here on MyDD and at Daily Kos, his comments on sites like Blue Oregon, his strong backing of Democratic candidates around the country in 2006 (you can read his response to the "Use it or Lose It" campaign here on MyDD), or from his support for the Yearly Kos convention. You may also know Earl from his strong progressive and forward thinking stances like bringing an end to the war in Iraq, calling for improved levees for New Orleans long before Hurricane Katrina, and working to reform federal farm policy (including reducing costly sugar subsidies). The bicyclists among us may also know Earl as the founder of the Congressional Bike Caucus.

Now for an important note: The views expressed by me on MyDD (and MyDD Blog Talk Radio, etc.) should not be read as reflective of those of Congressman Blumenauer. In other words, unless expressly stated, I don't speak for the Congressman. That important disclaimer aside, I'm stoked to be working with someone on Capitol Hill who really gets it and look forward to helping get out his message so that he can work even more closely with the Netroots to effect positive change, both here in Oregon and around the country.

Bit Off Topic:
Whistle Blowers Week on Capitol Hill

Scandals set to explode next week on Capitol Hill

http://www.dailykos.com

Next week, an avalanche of scandals will descend on Capitol Hill as dozens, and possibly hundreds, of government whistleblowers simultaneously deliver to Congress disclosures of government waste, fraud and abuse, including many that have never been told publicly. The mass disclosure of wrongoing is unprecendented and sure to create consternation among administration officials.

Whistleblowers are coming from all over the country to Washington, D.C., to take part in the Congressional tribunal, and other activities, both public and private. DKos readers who live in the DC area, will have a rare opportunity to support their your local whistleblowers, including DKos own Jesselyn Radack), at a book signing scheduled for Monday evening (May 14). New and familiar faces are among those participating in discussion panels to be broadcast Monday on CSPAN. The familiar faces include Jeffrey Wigand, the "Insider," and Coleen Rowley, TIME Magazine's Person of the Year.

Deep Harm's diary :: :: http://www.dailykos.com

Authors scheduled to appear at the book signing include whistleblowers Jesselyn Radack ("Canary in the Coalmine"), Mike German ("Think Like a Terrorist") Darlene  Fitzgerald ("BorderGate") and Arthuretta Martin ("Speaking on Success"). Authors of books on whistleblowing also will be present, including Steve Kohn :"Concepts and Procedures in Whistleblower Law," Tom Devine (The Whistleblower's Survival Guide") and Scott Harrington ("Pharmacology and the Nursing Process," which includes a chapter on whistleblowing).  Often, whistleblowers suffer economic losses from reporting official wrongdoing.  Buying their books is one way citizens can express support for those who display integrity in serving the public.

The activities are part of "Whistleblower Week in Washington," (see here and here) which has the support of members of the Make It Safe Coalition, a coalition of nonprofit organizations and individual whistleblowers that are working to convince Congress to pass stronger whistleblower protections.

Re: An Announcement (3.00 / 3)

Should OR-SEN been attached to the tag of this news?

Re: An Announcement (none / 0)

Uh, yes. This would be a very strange move for Blum otherwise. DeFazio is out, Kitzhaber doesn't want to move to DC...it's a pretty sad state of affairs, considering how vulnerable Smith is. Novick's a fighter, and he'd be good against Smith, but I think Blum is tossing his hat in the race.

Re: An Announcement (none / 0)

should we take this as a sign that he is planning to run for senate? I dont see why blumenauer would have  a netroot consultant for a safe congressional race.

by AC4508 on Fri May 11, 2007 at 05:20:46 PM EST

Yeah, except since 2001. (none / 0)

Well, actually, Congressman Blumenauer has had an internet strategist working with him since sometime in late 2001.

Me.  Well, my company - Mandate Media.  Earl has been one of our longest-standing clients.

We're very excited that Jonathan is on board.  He'll be invaluable in helping Blumenauer for Congress expand its outreach efforts -- more important now than ever, because we're now in the majority; and it's possible to actually pass legislation and do other great things.

Keep in mind that a decision to run for the US Senate is an intensely personal decision.  It's a commitment to up-end your life, commit thousands of hours to a risky venture, and - if you lose - you lose your job.

At this point, the only person who knows definitively if Earl Blumenauer is running, is Earl Blumenauer.  And probably not even him.

p.s.  What have we been doing for him?  Stuff like Help Earl Decide -- which helped drive over 1700 volunteers to Oregon legislative campaigns.

Does this mean you have to wear bow ties?

Earl was a real it at the grassroots fundraiser for Yearly Kos in DC about a month age.  We are really glad that he joined us.

From the East Coast... (none / 0)

we've been lookin at Congressman Blumenaur for a long time. He's one of the biggest supporters of the "Clean Water Protection Act," which would stop the dumping of toxic mountaintop removal coal-mining waste into our water.

And for that, he has my thanks.

Luck Mr. Singer!

Smart move Jon (none / 0)

Sirota should have taken your example.

If only he made this explicitly clear while working for Sherrod Brown on one hand while diminishing Paul Hackett on the keyboard with another.

Yes, I supported Hackett for Senate.

Re: Smart move Jon (none / 0)

David Sirota did not work for Sherrod Brown, but I did, and you probably didn't like that either (even though I did disclose it).

No worries (none / 0)

I recall you did disclose it and have no qualms there.

Yea, I am still bitter not just with Sirota but with how the events unfolded and how the Democratic leadership yanked the plug on Hackett's run for office.

Reminds me of another veteran running for office at the moment...

The focus should be on the good news.

Hence, Kudos Jon!

Re: An Announcement (none / 0)

This is great!  As Earl is my congressman I love this news.

I remember back when Blum first ran for his seat, which he got when Wyden won his Senate seat.  Of course there was a special election for the vacated House seat but that election was not that long before the regular congressional election took place.  The upshot was that there was 1) a primary election for the vacated seat, followed about a month later for 2) a primary election for the regular election, followed soon after by the 3) general election for the vacated seat, followed, 4) by the regular general election.  Four elections in half a year!

Blum, who was the lopsided favorite in each of those elections, developed a great slogan:  "Vote Earl.  Vote often".

I love the guy.

Re: An Announcement (none / 0)

Of course, Earl vacated his City Council seat - and so there was a special primary election for that seat, and then special regular.

If I remember right, Erik Sten was the big winner in that situation.  He came in third in the regular primary for the other regularly open Council seat, and while the top two were battling it out in the general, Erik was able to win Earl's seat in the special primary.

And of course the whole thing was kicked off by Packwood's resignation, which meant a special primary and special general for the Senate seat.

From November 1995 to November 1996, residents of Portland voted on six or seven different election days.
