Fred Thompson Was For Abortion Rights Before He Was Against Them

Last year, while watch an episode of "Law and Order", Fred Thompson's character said that he was pro life. This struck me as a bit odd because I could have sworn he was pro choice at least when he ran for the Senate in 1994. I was even more puzzled when I recently read a quote by good 'ol Fred that Roe V Wade was a bad ruling. Well, it turns out that I was not so crazy after all.

During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."

The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"

Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman. Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own."

I obtained a copy of the interview from Eric Dondero, founder of the Republican Liberty Caucus. He has more thoughts on the matter here.

Adn sure enough, there it is.

Murphey:

Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?

Thompson:

Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the women. Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own.

These Republicans, so desperate to curry favor to a sliver of the American electorate, have lost track of their positions and have become not pro choice or anti choice, but rather multiple choice.

on the issue. Fred had a solidly pro-life record in his years in the Senate, so I don't think it'll be that much of an issue for him. His pro-life credentials are more solid than any front-runner than McCain, so it seems he hasn't much to worry about.

He was marketed as a pro-lifer, but has always supported unrestricted 1st trimester abortions, and on the pro-life side he is viewed as pro-choice.  This is probably what provoked Dobson to declare that he is not a Christian.

To be fair, this was 11 years ago.

And, what was his voting record - consistently pro-life. And, THAT will matter to the Christian Conservatives.

Romney's voting record changed with the wind.

Thompson has been a consistent conservative.
And, he's a very dangerous candidate.

Re: Fred Thompson (none / 0)

All this crap about trying to find another Ronald Reagan gives Democrats a great opening. The Republicans are obsessed, as always, with trying to find an elusive "golden age" when everything was better. They're fixated on the past, on the way things were.

Democrats are the party of the future. Everything we do and believe is rooted in the belief that we have a responsibility to give our children a bright future. We learn from history, but we don't try and re-live it. We want to create a new and better future. I say, let the GOP go on a snipe hunt for some great conservative of yore. Whether its Reagan or Goldwater or Mallard Fillmore, they're are all retreads of the same failed ideas.
