Let's imagine that the $2.5M federal loan is about 3 percentage points below what it would have been otherwise commerically--say a loan at 6% instead of 9%.  The interest saved over the course of 5 years (though I imagine it's more likely a 10 year loan) is about $375,000.

That's a great return on the initial $1000 investment.

I wonder how many more of the people on Karl's list that didn't initially make sense are involved in other scandals we have yet to find out about.

Somebody should start looking real closely at all the candidates Rove labeled as vulnerable who didn't seem initially vulnerable. Maybe Karl's list is more like a list of corrupt Republicans than it is a list of vulnerable Republicans.

In 2006, the BPA gave $94,500 to Republicans and  $3000 to Dems (Ben Nelson), and $2500 to Joe Lieberman.  Kuhl got zip.
In 2004, the BPA gave $90,000 to Reps ($0 to Kuhl), and $3000 to Dems (Nick Rahall and James Oberstar )
In 2002, the BPA gave $33,800 to Republicans and
$6750 to Dems (Baucus, Collin Peterson, Karen Thurman, Dennis Cardoza).  Nothing to Kuhl.  

In 2000, 93% of their roughly $50k in donations went to Republicans, and in 1998, $35,400 in donations, 97% republican.

If enough pressure and blowback, this could send Congressman Kuhl to early retirement.  Living in the district, there is a huge dissapointment over the closing of the acute psych ward during a time of war when it is desperately needed and essential for our veterans.

Now we know Kuhl is not just full of pork but manure as well.

National blogs simply don't have the resources to delve into each Congressional seat at this level of detail.

Good job, to both you and the people who are commenting with more information about it.  If I recall correctly, NY District 29 was a VERY close race, where Democrats almost turned it.  The guy who ran against Kuhl is possibly going to run again.  

Like someone said, "Even I could write the ad for that campaign."  All the opposing campaign needs is this information and they can poise their candidate up as an ethical guy looking for change, to clean up Washington.  Even if it's true.  That would be huge.  

Could we stop calling every scandal "Whatever-gate" please? It's even worse than having wars on drugs and terror.

I'm in Kuhl's district.  Netroots candidate Eric Massa almost beat him in '06 in this once-red district.  (49-51, I think.)

Massa is running again.  Kuhl is toast in '08.

Kuhl is a weak incumbent who has gotten around 51% in the last couple of elections.  Massa would very likely be a Congressman today if the DCCC had not let him down in the clutch money-wise.  Massa is running again and has a great chance.  With strong support from the DCCC and the netroots he could win, especially with scandals like this.
