Yeah it was a good answer but his ability to "transcend" issues is by talking around them and not about them. "What can we do on issues that we agree with, not just ones we dont." Edwards had the better answer.

Gravel - wow.

Biden is Biden as usual, apart from the one-word answer. Richardson looks really uncomfortable - shifting around, seems like he can't hear Williams or something, and he has the lead in annoying hand gestures.

The other thing I was going to say - if anyone caught the pre-debate show, they had Brokaw on saying some crap along the lines of "the people don't want anymore partisan politics"... typical Lieberman-ish beltway media BS. Why is it these idiots only trot out that tired line when it's Democrats they're talking about? Americans don't give a shit if politicians are partisan or bipartisan - what they want is to fix the problems in the government and restore fairness and justice in this country. Tom Brokaw, I respect you, but as Bart Simpson would say "Get bent, sir."

Richardson is the strongest presidential candidate, by far, at least if people voted on substance and not style.

He has executive and foreign policy experience that most of the other Democratic candidates lack, and has stronger crossover appeal to independents and disaffected Republicans (who can't knock him for his tax record and 2nd Amendment positions.)

Re: Democratic Presidential Debate Thread (none / 0)

I can't see anything in Bill Richardson that would make me vote for him.  He is not presidential in my book.

Re: Democratic Presidential Debate Thread (none / 0)

Damn.  John jus fumbled that one.  He got the right answers but that pause was way uncomfortable.

She even mentioned her sponsors, the corporate elite.

Re: Democratic Presidential Debate Thread (none / 0)

Tentative conclusions: this debate changed little. Nobody won, everyone who mattered did OK, and nobody lost.

Richardson and Biden got some positive visibility, but nothing immense. Edwards did quite well, but sort of messed up his last answer. Obama seemed a little uncomfortable throughout, almost a little Kerry-like, but he knocked his last answer out of the park. Clinton was totally unmemorable, as was Dodd to a somewhat-surprising extent. Kuchinich and Gravel were, obviously, the spoilers.

Best moment was Obama annihilating Kucinich, followed by Biden's one-word "yes" answer.

Re: Democratic Presidential Debate Thread (none / 0)

I think I have to agree with you on your analysis. I like Edwards and I think he looked very cool and collected and did what he does best which is trying to communicate personal level as opposed to talking on the big picture. I like Obama as a person and sometimes as a politician but I have been somewhat let down by him in the Senate. However, I feel like he did a decent job up there tonight and gradually gave better and better answers. Maybe its just me, but Hillary turned me off very much. I dont think America is ready for a woman to be president and I do so for one reason - she came off as if she was lecturing people and no one likes to be lectured by a woman whether its your girlfriend, wife, or a Clinton. Dodd did the best of the 2nd tier compared to a bored and aloof Richardson and the token old timer Biden. Kucinich and Gravel are a distraction. Did anyone win? No. Were there things to be noticed among the top candidates? Yes.

Re: Democratic Presidential Debate Thread (none / 0)

Well I guess I"m the odd man out here on how Edwards did on the last question and how Obama did on the repsonse to Kucinich.

I actually appreciated Edwards's long pause because it meant he was actually thinking about the question. That's a pretty deep question and it was nice he didn't have a pat response (like just saying Jesus or Gandhi or something). Because the original question was who was the one person. And he couldn't think of just one person.

As far as Obama. I really didn't like his response about Iran. To me it felt like September 2002 all over again when he said we know that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon. Do we really know that or are we being fed a line again because a bunch of hawks want to go to war?

Did anybody else have the same impression?
