Dean's '03 numbers & the donor pool

A follow up on the money race... I did a bit of researching (calling Larry Biddle) to find out the question that I'd asked earlier in a blog post about how many people Howard Dean had contribute to his presidential campaign.

This was sparked from having looked a bit into the number of donors for Dean during 2003 for 1Q (11,000) and 2Q (73,000), and seeing the '07 numbers for 1Q by Obama (83,500), Clinton (50,000), and Edwards (40,000) completely eclipse the 1Q pace set by Dean.

The number of donors to Dean's campaign was approximately 318,000 and the total number of donations made was approximately 454,000. The 1Q numbers by the big three total about half the Dean numbers overall.

It does puts into perspective that Dean's growth happened later in '03 than the candidates this go around. Maybe it's just that the internet donors on the democratic side are so accustomed to doing internet contributions in the primary, that there's more willingness this time around for the early ask than 4 years ago (and the askers have certainly exceeded their asking capabilities over four years ago at this time). Maybe that legacy group of online contributors also explains why McCain had 50,000 donors in the 1Q.

You have to remember, Dean's campaign basically invented online donations.  Everyone else, in both parties, is standing on his shoulders.

McCain got online donations in 2000.

I think this speaks more to the organization and sofistication of the Democratic Party's Net roots Base. With each election, we seem to be fine tuning our stratgy as a web community and the more organized we are, the more powerful we become. Think about all the major stories that have broke in the MSM. Is it a coincidence that these stories started in the "Liberal" Blogosphere? From Plamegate to Abramhoff to the outing and resignation of Mark Foley; Cheneys got a gun , We want out of Iraq, Joe Lieberman getting booted out of the Democratic Party , the list goes on and on.

Re: Dean's '03 numbers & the donor pool (3.00 / 0)

I thought Obama reported 100,000 in Q1....

I think that Dean showed that the people could challenge the establishment. I think Ned Lamont's primary victory, along with Jim Webb's upset victory in Virginia, showed that individual people united by cause and principle can beat the establishment machines and change the status quo, but it means getting involved and showing support, especially financially, early and often.

Now we're just plain drunk with power...

I agree.

We're "wasted man" LOL. Or, as they say in my homestate of Cali, "We're totally shetfaced, dude"

But this is a good thing. It's time for the American people to take our nation back. The Baby Boomers did it their way in the 60's and were doing it our way now. I think history will show that our generations movement, while not exactly similar to the 60's movement, yielded the same results and carried the same passion.

Agreed on both counts.

Obama reported 100,000 donors and every single vote matters.

Re: Dean's '03 numbers & the donor pool (none / 0)

It's from the massive growth of online communities from blogs to my space and facebook.
In 04 I did not donate as I did not really know where to donate directly to a candidate and had not discovered blogs and was just frustrated by the gop rah rahing on the news.
Not knowing differently, I heard blogs were not reliable.  But, frustration with all the conservative talking points drove me crazy and finally decided to check it out for myself.  Wonderment.  They were more than reliable.  They were the way it was suppose to be.  And I could even interact.  Got hooked.  And now I donate directly to my favorite candidate online - 100.00 to Obama pre March 31.

One million to anyone would be amazing and a real shake up.  The online communities have really shook politics up as THEY knew it.  hehehe
