We Win

The White House quickly buckles to the pressure brought on by Tim Tagaris (on behalf of Chris Dodd) --and many others fighting against the nomination over the past couple of weeks-- this AM:

From: Tim Tagaris (Chris Dodd for President)
Subject: Say 'NO!' to Swiftboat Backer Sam Fox

Dear Jerome Armstrong,

Later today, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled to vote on whether or not to approve the nomination of Sam Fox as America's Ambassador to Belgium.

Normally, these confirmations are quite routine.

Not this one ...

Sam Fox helped bankroll the reprehensible activities of "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth," by contributing $50,000 to the group infamous for its ads attacking Senator John Kerry's service during the Vietnam War.

Senator Dodd will oppose that nomination, and said the following yesterday:

"U.S. ambassadors need to be both responsible and credible, and Mr. Fox's support for an organization known to have spread falsehoods illustrates neither. The fact that Mr. Fox refused to apologize for his behavior during his nomination hearing reinforces my belief that he would not be an acceptable representative for the position of U.S. ambassador."

Sam Fox is not fit to serve as an ambassador of the United States.

WITHDRAWAL SENT TO THE SENATE:

Sam Fox, of Missouri, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Belgium, which was sent to the Senate on January 9, 2007.

Re: We Win (none / 0)

A minor win in the grand scheme of things, but it feels good.

Re: Kit Bond (none / 0)

Bond is clearly out of touch:

Most of us have had this experience: You reach in your wallet or your purse, knowing you've got a ten or a twenty in there, and it's gone. And you can't remember where it went.

Or it's Girl Scout Cookie time and as the girls come to the door, you buy a box of Thin Mints here, a couple of boxes of Do-si-dos there. After a while, you can't remember which girl sold you which cookies.

So most folks can probably sympathize with Sam Fox, the chairman of St. Louis' Harbour Group investment company. Last week, Mr. Fox said he couldn't remember who asked him for the $50,000 he gave in 2004 to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth

$10, $20, $50,000... what's the difference?

Kit, Chris & a Spine (none / 0)

Perhaps Kit is so wealthy, after a lifetime as a public employee, that $50 K for a box of cookies sounds reasonable.  This man needs treatment, not scorn from bloggers.  We need compassion for Kit Bond.  This man has earned a secure retirement.

Advice for Ambassador wannabees: don't give money to liars (like the Swiftboaters).

Congrats to Chris Dodd, a Democrat with a spine.

Claire McCaskill support for Fox? (none / 0)

"Mr. Fox has the support of Missouri Sens. Christopher "Kit" Bond, a Republican, and Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, and our support as well."

What's the story with this?
