CPAC: UnCool, and Edwards is "a 'Faggot"

So I watched a bit of CPAC on C-Span, and Ann Coulter was up giving a generic rhetorically ridiculous speech.  At a certain point, she said "I would talk about Edwards but I've heard that you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot'".  And then during the Q&A, Coulter answered a question from a college student on how to combat apathy with 'Show Ronald Reagan movies and start a Joe McCarthy club, those are my best ideas'.  I have to say, the whole conservative charade seems a bit tired.  I can't imagine anything less appealing to college students or really anyone than a Joe McCarthy club or Ronald Reagan movies.  That is so seriously uncool, not in the sense that it's bad, but in the sense that it's just remarkably unfun.

Anyway, one thing to keep in mind, aside from the conservative uncoolness, is that she called a major Democratic candidate a faggot.  Ok, she's an entertainer, so whatever.  But keep in mind that prior to her appearance, most major Republican Presidential candidates appeared on the stage to make appeals to the audience.

I wonder if they support Coulter's statement.  Do they think it's appropriate to call John Edwards a faggot?

UPDATE: Thinkprogress has the video.

UPDATE AGAIN: I called a contact at the Edwards campaign for a response. Nothing yet. It would be stupid to respond to Coulter, but it's a good idea to hang Coulter around Romney and Giuliani's neck.

It's Time for Coulter to go (none / 0)

Sounds like a job for BlogPAC!

Seriously, I think Edwards should circulate a petition calling for newspapers to drop Coulter's column and for networks to refuse her as a guest, not just for this insult, but for every other time she opens her mouth.

Re: It's Time for Coulter to go (none / 0)

This is a job for John Edwards & his campaign -- to attack the candidates like flip-flopping acrobat Mitt Romney who say nice things about Coulter.  I can't imaging why they would let this pass.  When someone throws you a slow, hanging curveball, ya gotta swing.

Re: NOT A JOB FOR EDWARDS campaign (none / 0)

I just disagree.  Edwards needs to stand out & stand up, not about him being insulted but against using that word against anybody.  Not all attacks should be answered, but most should.  I guess Kerry didn't want to get down in the dirt with the swiftboaters.  Edward's should at least issue a statement against Coulter & hate speech.  What has he got to lose?

Maybe T.R. Knight can be our spokesman on this one.

Beyond pathetic (3.00 / 1)

Hmm, a barren middle-aged woman who's never been married calling a middle-aged married man with several children (one of whom died in an accident) a faggot. And this from someone deeply involved in a political movement that's absolutely swimming in gay-bashing closeted gays. Not that there's anything hypocritical or just a tad pathetic about that, of course.

And I didn't even say a word about Adam's apples.

Uncool doesn't even begin to describe these people. Life's losers finding each other, getting together and deciding to call it a "movement". That's about what it amounts to. And they couldn't even find a real conservative to turn into their patron saint. Ronnie the labor leader Democratic leftie had a nervous breakdown (also known as a Howard Beale moment) in the late 40's and became a "conservative" and then a demented president.

So beyond uncool that they haven't even invented a word for it.

Scary-ass pathetic works for me, though.

UnCool, and Edwards is "a 'Faggot" (none / 0)

That's pretty pathetic even for her. I hope the Republican candidates have the courage to put her in her place.

Re: CPAC & Coulter (none / 0)

Romney spoke before Coulter's appearance and made a complimentary and approving reference to her in his speech -- then went on to joke about Coulter as a "moderate."

Think anyone will hold him accountable for approving this kind of speech?

Can Coulter get away with it? (none / 0)

That's the question. And while the Edwards campaign certainly could take a swing at her, I don't think they should be alone. Question is, do we have organizations that can - and will - mobilize an outpouring of outrage.

Uh, no. (none / 0)

"Ok, she's an entertainer, so whatever.  But keep in mind that prior to her appearance, most major Republican Presidential candidates appeared on the stage to make appeals to the audience."

I can only hope that you are saying those words in jest, because if you aren't, then I am not sure what to think. She's no more an entertainer than I am a professional basketball player. She's an opinion writer who uses a particularly heinous form of polemic rhetoric to try to seem relevant and somewhat amusing.

And yes, it's a good idea to tie those comments to the Republican candidates, if they do not denounce them when asked. Fair is fair, after all.

Re: CPAC: UnCool, and Edwards (none / 0)

This is Ann Coulter. Is this surprising? Come on. She's a repulsive racist bigoted shrew. Always has been.

"Faghag" Coulter (none / 0)

OK, uncool to use that term in a public forum. But isn't this the same lady who associates with the effeminate Ramesh Ponnuru and dated that wuss Dinesh D Souza at one time? Ha ha.

Maybe she needs to get her friends and lovers to watch Paul Newman movies to see how a real man acts.

Re: Ann is a shrew and worse (none / 0)

I think that's the point.  We on the left(and I use this term loosely) seem to give the right the freedom to express themselves without any outrage or call for their firing or death(snark) whenever they are particularly vile.  That lack of outrage on our part seem to encourage their celebrity status thus gives them a bigger forum in which to spew, I mean share their thoughts.  I think we should start calling out their racist, bigoted and homophobic comments just as fiercely as they do us.  Make them have to apologize over and over again and be subjected to public ridicule.  Maybe when a brighter light is shone on their vileness, they will shrink back into obscurity( A dream I know).

Re: What's left to call a white man? (none / 0)

When I moved to Montana I challenged the white guys here to come up with a term for a white man that is as demeaning and hateful as the "n" word for black people and the "c" word for women.  Only thing left is the "f" word even if it's not true.  It's the way to insult a white man.  "Bastard" just doesn't work anymore. The right wing haters like it simple. So suposedly we have  a "n" and a "c" and now an"f" running for President of the top tier.  On the other side, we have a cross dresser,  a guy with magical pants and an old brain addled panderer.  This will be a great  campaign. Lots of diversity all the way around.
People, the nation and the world is in grave danger.
We are trying to save democracy.  We are trying to save our republic.  All candidates should denouce this name calling smallness.  We must elevate the discussion.  Our lives depend upon it.
