Live on the cable nets, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is holding a press conference in an attempt to stave off calls for his resignation. Consider this an open thread on this topic and others on your mind...
- Gonzales concedes that "mistakes have been made" and that "the responsibility" lies on him -- but effectively states that he will not accept responsibility for his own actions or those who work under him.
- Gonzales ducks a very tough question, one that goes to the heart of why he is in trouble: How is it possible that your chief of staff was consulting with the White House to craft a list of United States Attorneys to be fired and you not know about it? Very, very weak answer from Gonzales centers on the notion that Gonzales has a lot of employees.
- Gonzales states that he believes that the mistake made was that information was not shared with the Congress, completely ducking the fact that a) there was undo political and partisan pressure put on U.S. Attorneys and that b) these prosecutors were fired for those political and partisan reasons. On a follow up question, Gonzales continues to assert that it is a problem of communication, not corruption.
- To conclude, Gonzales says that he stands by his decision.
Very, very weak. Anyway, feel free to consider this an open thread on any topic... What's on your mind? The prosecutor purge? Homophobia from the top of the military? The Dow moving way down again?
