Daley Crushes Opponents

This is for my fellow Midwestern posters.

Mayor Richard M. Daley won a sixth term Tuesday, putting him on track to become the city's longest-serving mayor because he would surpass his legendary father if he serves the full term.

"People talk about alleged corruption, but when you have a city this size, he can't possibly know what's going on at all levels," DeMarty said, adding that Daley has kept Chicago's economy strong. "Some cities are desolate, but Chicago has vitality."

I think people "got" it.  Daley is a machine politician, and there have been allegations of corruption.  But the City of Chicago has a thriving economy and is a completely different city than it was when Daley took it over.

I have to say I'm pleased, but not surprised.  Congratulations Mayor Daley!

I am not a fan of Daley the person, but without a doubt the city is a better place now than before he took over.

I really do think he knows about most of the corruption (he is his father's son after all) but I am hoping the focus on it will lead to a less of it... provided he isn't indicted.  I would have like to have seen a real challenge to him... Jesse Jackson Jr would have been nice... but he will keep the City growing and improving so it works.

Jesse Jackson Jr. would have chased business from Chicago.

Disagree 100%.  There might be some adjustment, but ultimately, Chicago is too rich a plum for a business to leave it.  Hell the Big Box alderman got relected and Daley's business interests were GUNNING for him.

How you can be both a Daley supporter and an Edwards supporter blow my mind completely...

Re: Daley Crushes Opponents (none / 0)

As much as I hate WalMart, the big box ordinance unfairly targeted them.  The supporters of the ordinance were more concerned with being anti-WalMart than with providing jobs to people on the south and west sides.

I have my own reasons for supporting Edwards, and I have criticized Daley in the past.  But when presented with the alternatives, there really isn't an alternative... I mean, Jesse "let's build a third airport" Jr?  Come on!

Re: Daley Crushes Opponents (none / 0)

Illinois SHOULD build a third airport... HELL FUCKING YEAH it should.  Hell, Chicago shouldn't even control O'hare... that Land grab from the Old man is one of the biggest pieces of bull shit in Illinois history.  Daley fights it tooth and nail because it diminishes his influence... The Chicagoland Area has the most domestic flights going in and out daily.  The region benefits from a third airport greatly...

Frankly, given the shitty way the CTA is run and the absolute waste that goes on there, the state should take over all Transportation matters... Trains, Planes, and Subways.

Fuck Walmart.    The people on the south and west sides need jobs with a living wage, not the BS wage that Walmart pays.  They are a parasite on America and I hope the Walton Heirs and the Current Senior management rost in hell where they belong.

I work in the airline industry, and I can tell you a third "Chicago" airport is just not logistically feasible.  Even though it would be a third airport, and the idea might be to allow more aircraft in the airspace at one time, the Chicago airspace is already pretty saturated.

WalMart would have to pay its employees the same minimum wage as any other company in the Chicago area.  The Big Box ordinance would have required Wal Mart, and for example Best Buy, Whole Foods, Target, etc, to pay a higher minimum wage than say, Dominicks, Subway, etc.

Oh please, he knows what's going on. I was hoping Jackson would run, but oh well.

Re: Daley Crushes Opponents (none / 0)

This is not a good thing. It's a sad day for true democracy. I was hoping Jackson would run as well, he would have had a shot.

Maybe next Sunday Daley will find another airport to plow down in the middle of the night. He does whatever he feels like, whenever he feels like it. Even Bush could learn a thing or two from Daley.

The only good news is that Jackson's wife walloped Daley's guy as Alderman in the 7th.

Term limits should be mandatory for all offices in the country.

We have term limits, they're called elections.

Re: Daley Crushes Opponents (none / 0)

Frankly, so is supporting term limits.  Voters have an opportunity every election to kick someone out of office.  Why do I need to be told I can't vote for someone I believe is doing a good job?

Re: Daley Crushes Opponents (none / 0)

Term limits also help to keep low info voters from heavily influencing low turnout elections.  Without term limits, Reagan would have fucked up America for another 4 years.

As an Illinois resident, I'd like to know how many of the dead voted in this election?  lol

Re: Daley Crushes Opponents (none / 0)

None... Daley didn't need them... Maybe if Jackson had run.
