Reid Has the Power

So far, all of us have sent around 2500 emails to various Nevada officials, and they are definitely feeling pressure.  I don't think they expected our vocal frustration, so I suppose it's understandable that they wouldn't act as quickly as they should in dropping Fox News.  Myrna at Reno and Its Discontents has a more full story.

While my first response to the statement was sympathetic to the state party and an attempt at a sort of defense because I could see what they were going to be up against (the boycott emails were already flying), my more thoughtful response is that that state party is in for a heap of trouble and embarrassment thanks to the deal making of Harry Reid (although I hear that his "people" deny his involvement in the deal with Fox News).  According to MediaBistro (thanks Marcus), Fox News was determined to hold the first presidential debate and since CNN booked New Hampshire on April 4rth and 5th, and MSNBC booked theirs in South Carolina on April 26th, it was only natural for Fox News to approach someone in Nevada (rumor is that Iowa may have turned them down first) for the earliest scheduled debate.

Chris Bowers of MyDD.com, Markos Moulitsas Zúniga of DailyKos.com, and Adam Green of Moveon.org are going to use the Fox News debate as a way to pressure politicians, pundits, and journalists to stop treating Fox News as if it were a legitimate news outlet using their websites and Robert Greenwald's new short film to be released on YouTube tomorrow called "Fox Attacks Obama."  Short of Obama's refusal to be interviewed by the outlet, Democrats have never had such a good chance to send such a powerful statement to Fox News about its coverage.

Some folks in Nevada thought they could get away with it, but its not clear who (Reid? Collins? Other Democratic operatives outside the state?).  One thing we know for sure, its hard to say no to Reid in Nevada.  For those of us inside the state, its sometimes hard to understand Reid's status as netroots darling because of his disappointing strategy on Iraq,  Alito, and of course his gentleman's agreement with golfing Senator John Ensign.  Perhaps its because Democrats have been in the minority for so long, and because Reid was able to rub Frist's face in the dirt now and again, that some are willing to forgive him for his often misplaced priorities?  Nevada certainly benefits from his stature in the Senate, but still...

So I don't know who is responsible for scheduling the debate with Fox News, but if nothing else, Reid and the party have the power to change the situation.  I'm also thinking that the state party should have held out for Court TV or Bravo or another cable station more respected than Fox News.  I mean Bravo is responsible for bringing us Top Chef and Project Runway.  Imagine what they could do with a presidential debate.  Time to start the politicking.

Moveon is jumping into the fray today big time, along with this site Fox Attacks by Brave New Films (who made OutFoxed).

One. Hundred. Percent. (none / 0)

I am backing this deal 1. 100. percent and I can think of one, simple action that a certain great party leader did before, that we can all do.

It is very, very simple.

Cancel your cable. Just drop the cable service, and enjoy the extra sixty bucks a month. Since when does cable trump anything we can find out here or at that dreadful orange kos or even instapundit (strange bedfellow.).

So simple, since when does activism - save you money? Actually make you money?

I am not asking for your money. I am asking you to keep your money. Take that money and put it into a company that makes a white light LED, it will double. Or just go out and have fun.

If you can, the next best thing is to specifically request the cable company provider drop the news media entertainment channel that you don't want. After all, do you subscribe to pornography? No. Why pay for it?

I know some of us out there have cable so we can have triple play. I have actually thought of getting cable so I can get 10 Mb internet service and see how it is. I beta-tested 760k service back in 1998 for charter. It was fun, but the cable modem was slightly unreliable. I hear they are better these days..

No Contest: Project Runway vs. The O'Reilly Factor (none / 0)

Although, actually, O'Reilly vs. Top Chef brings to mind Levi-Strauss & one of anthropology's greatest hits: The Raw and the Cooked.

So it's 'Reid v netroots' (none / 0)

I know nothing about the internal politics of the Nevada Democratic Party.

But, given Reid's position (four term senator, Maj Leader, etc, etc), I find it inconceivable that he was not involved in the Fox deal from the start.

And that, if, at any stage, he'd got cold feet, the plug would have been pulled.

Essentially, it must have been Reid's decision, not just as the ratification of a fait accompli, but as a full participant every step of the way. (The fact he wasn't in the room with Fox guys makes no difference to that.)

And the Fox deal must also have been OK'd by the campaigns of the main candidates who would be taking part.

On the other side, we have - the netroots. Or some of them.

Is there opposition from any other element in the party?

If not, with that lineup, I can't see Fox being dumped, somehow.

"Personally" (none / 0)

Yesterday a Reid staffer said that Sen. Reid was not "personally" involved in the negotiations to effect this deal with FoxNoise.  The use of the word "personally" tells us several things.

1.  Reid was indeed involved in the negotiations but he did so at one step removed.  He must have either signaled approval or even encouraged the deal.  If he was not at all involved, the statement would have said he was not involved, instead of qualifiying the nature of his non-involvement.

2.  Reid is feeling the heat.  By trying to give the appearance of being not involved, and using a weasal word to cover his actual involvement, he is telling us that he knows he is in some hot water for his actions.

3.  Pressure works.  A little pressure yesterday got him to try to minimize his role.  Imagine what a lot of pressure would do.

Re: Reid Has the Power (none / 0)

I think we should start putting pressure on the candidates to announce they will boycott any debate hosted by Fox.

Re: Reid Has the Power (none / 0)

Maybe it's Reid's way of telling Rupert that there is a way to legislate him into the land of REAL FAIRNESS.

As for the Clinton and Bush Families....20 WAS PLENTY!

Re: Reid Has the Power (none / 0)

FOX never did air the fact that there are roaches feasting on something at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital.

What draws roaches?

The roaches have been there for 3 years.

Wasn't Tom DeLay Majority leader?

Wasn't Tom DeLay an exterminator???

Re: Reid Has the Power (none / 0)

Isn't Reid's son now with HRC's campaign.  Anyone know what he says about all this?  In what other capacity will he advising HRC?

"...The Hillary campaign also announced this morning that it had signed up Dem Senate leader Harry Reid's son, Rory Reid, as the chair of her Nevada operation. Reid, a former chair of the Nevada state Democratic Party, will also advise the Hillary campaign on western issues such as public lands and conservation issues..."http://electioncentral.tpmcafe.com/blog/ electioncentral/2007/feb/18/hllary_reels _in_more_kerry_fundraisers_hires_reids_s on_as_nevada_chair

Re: Reid Has the Power (none / 0)

It's obvious that HRC is using this to get Harry's stamp of approval.  I am not particularly impressed with him as Majority Leader.  He has to know that he'd catch a lot of shit for this.  If he doesn't, that says a lot about his political instincts.

Folks, We Have Already Won (2.00 / 0)

I'm scoring one here for the netroots, and we don't even have to close Daou's Triangle on this or anything. I don't know who started pushing this first, but major kudos are in order.

If the Fox gig gets canceled, we score a major victory.

If we don't get the gig canceled, I think we win even more. Every day that nothing happens is an oppurtunity to talk about Fox being a false news outlet. An oppurtunity to talk about Hume's biased behavior at the last debate (and in general). A chance to point out the ridiculous spin they put on the whole thing (and in general).

It may even finally push the issues surrounding the "Democrat Party" bullcrap into the MSM, which has been a hard argument to make without looking like you're a whining 13 year-old who didn't get invited to a party.

Little by little, this story is seeping into the MSM. CNN, who has recently started to show signs of fighting Fox with facts (e.g. the Obama Madrassa incident), has every reason to run with this story and hit Fox over the head with it.

This is the kind of things the Repugs have been so good at over the years-- create situations where they win no matter the outcome.

We've got to keep hammering this thing, but remember-- win or lose, this is a great story for us.

Re: Folks, We Have Already Won (none / 0)

But we have no media...

That's the problem... we're reliant on an MSM that is not on our side....

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Folks, We Have Already Won (none / 0)

I don't think it's going to be talked about in the MSM unless an actual candidate boycotts it.  Considering the hatchet job Fox tried to do on Obama, I think he's best positioned to do the boycott while receiving the least amount of flak for doing so.

Thanks,

Mike
