Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates?

I'm in Reno now just ahead of the Democratic presidential forum down in Carson City sponsored by AFSCME -- the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees -- which has also sponsored by travel and accomodations to the event. Per release:

A Democratic Presidential Forum focusing on issues that affect working families will take place in Carson City, Nevada, on Wednesday, February 21, 2007. The event is sponsored by AFSCME and will be moderated by ABC's George Stephanopoulos.

More than 500 AFSCME members and retirees will attend this first-of-its-kind event. Confirmed candidates include Senator Joe Biden, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Chris Dodd, former Senator John Edwards, former Senator Mike Gravel, Representative Dennis Kucinich, Governor Bill Richardson and former Governor Tom Vilsack.

The forum will take place on Wednesday, February 21st at 12:00 noon Pacific (3:00pm Eastern, 2:00pm Central, 1:00pm Mountain). AFSCME members and retirees from Nevada will ask the candidates where they stand on today's pressing issues:

  • Will they pledge to support a vibrant public sector workforce?
  • What will they do to protect Social Security and ensure that every American retires in dignity?
  • How will they make college more affordable for poor and middle class families?

I'll be on hand giving rundowns of the speeches and question responses of each of the candidates in attendence (all announced candidates, with the exception of Barack Obama, who will be in Iowa). What's more, I am scheduled to speak with Chris Dodd tomorrow and will hopefully have the chance to speak with some of the other candidates one-on-one tomorrow, too. What questions would you liked asked of Senator Dodd -- or, for that matter, some of the other candidates? Please either leave your question or questions in the comment section below or alternatively shoot me an email at jonathan-at-mydd-dot-com. I will try my best to work in as many of your questions as possible. Thanks for the input.

Update [2007-2-21 12:1:34 by Jonathan Singer]: Just to add, because I seem to have forgotten to in the initial post, you should be able to watch this debate on C-SPAN/C-SPAN.org today starting at or around 3 PM Eastern.

If it is not clear from the post above and in the interest of as clear disclosure as possible, my trip to Nevada has been sponsored by AFSCME.

Re: Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates? (none / 0)

Please ask Dodd if he was the Golden Boy who met some little-bit autistic guy at Danbury (CT) High School. (That would be Robert Joyce.) I gotta know. (Public schools in CT were virtual private schools.)

Then the now generic drill about the morally and financially devastating war addiction of the Bush gang (and what will happen when Russia puts 'ABM' sites in Iran, etc.)

Connecticut is wild and wonderful and nutty. (And kinda pricey.) But I really like Dodd a lot. He is whip smart, and he has that great Nutmeg style, and he understands the good old pull-together approach.

Re: Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates? (3.00 / 2)

I'd like to see them asked:

Would you favor a federal law ending "at will employment"?  i.e. Would they favor a law requiring employers to offer reason for firing employees, and severance pay where adequate cause for dismissal isn't established?

The United States is almost alone among OECD nations in the lack of rights for workers.

In the vast majority of countries, employers have to justify dismissal and offer severance where cause isn't established.

Placed in the context of what citizens in other industrialized democracies have in the way of workplace rights, the lack of equivalent rights for American workers is damning.

I wrote on this last year.

I would ask Senator Dodd what three things he would do to lower the U.S. trade deficit.

How can anyone on the stage who supports NAFTA or CAFTA or fast track authority credibly contend that they support the rights or interests of American workers?

Re: Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates? (none / 0)

Dodd's record on trade isn't perfect, but is one of the better amongst the '08 contenders.

Looking at his record, I see that he voted against CAFTA and the Oman, Singapore, Chile, and Andean free trade agreements.  CATO gives him a 17% which is pretty good.

The two things that jump out at me as bad on his record are voting yes for permanent normal trade relations with China, and extension of fast track.

Loaded question.  Similar to, "when did you stop beating your wife?" :)

Don't count on it being asked.

My questions for this candidate base (none / 0)

First, I am very glad they are in Nevada.

1. Will you repeal the element of the patriot act that allows the president to appoint states atty general indefinitely, without Senate Confirmation?

2. Will you protect the environment - specifically will you use your powers of office to respond to global warming ?

3. Will you attach a rider to no child left behind, to require that the schools provide children with a multivitamin and/or require them to eliminate junk food from their menu?

4. Will you call for a universal healthcare policy based on AFSCME and other models, that will allow - this is the key - price competition amongst medical establishments , and the public posting display of the cost of medical procedures. That is, ea. hospital participating has to list the cost of each procedure ?

Re: Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates? (3.00 / 1)

In the same spirit as the previous poster, will you, without nuance, support universal health care? And will you publicly state that we will need to increase taxes to sustain this policy?  Edwards did this, what about you?

Re: Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates? (3.00 / 1)

I would like to know what they think of the Massachussets health care plan vis a vis universal health care. Do they think it's a good plan? Specifically, do they think $250/month premiums is an appropriate amount for a single person making $30,000 a year to pay?

p.s. I asked Senator Edwards this question on the Diane Rehm show and he basically said that if you make $30,000 a year in his plan your premiums will be "heavily subsidized" which was very good to hear considering the MA plan provides no subsidies for this income level.

Re: Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates? (3.00 / 0)

John Edwards has asked Bush to suspend negotiations with South Korea on a trade pact.  It would be the biggest since NAFTA.  Where do you stand?

Do you support the Hamilton Project's view that free trade can be best supported by increased social prograns for those who are dislocated by it, or so you support more provisions on labor on environmental issues in trade agreements, which is somtimes described as fair trade?

What will you do and what have you done to help grow the union movement?

Not a question, but it bothers me that every declared candidate except Obama chose to go, and Obama is is California and could go.  Is Obama not yet ready for prime time in a forum with other candidates?

On Imus. . . (3.00 / 1)

Dodd was asked if Joe Wilson may himself be a liar.  Chris, as I understand it, said, "That may veyr well be. . ." before going on to answer another part of the questions in play in his own way.

Does Chris Dodd believe Joe Wilson is a liar, and if so, what part of anything Wilson has said in public has been a lie?

Re: Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates? (none / 0)

What would your Administration do to rebuild New Orleans?  What protections for labor would be built in as opposed to this administration going out of its way to use non-union, non-local labor?

Will you pledge to remove FEMA from contractor/cronies and to restore the professional, civil service management that efectively ran the agency in the past?

Do you take the war on terrorism seriously?  Do other Democrats?  What was Hillary Clinton thinking in making a blanket accusation against unnamed other Democrats.  Won't this strengthen Republican by reinforcing a major theme often used ruthlessly and inaccuratley against Democrats?

From my husband turnerbroadcasting (none / 0)

These are from my husband (turnerbroadcasting, who was banned from mydd by matt stoller), when I mentioned to him that you were collecting questions..

1. What are you planning to do, to stop the AIDS epidemic?

2. Do you support embryonic stem cell research?

3. What are your plans for the war on terror?

4. Would you support any move to make legislation easier to read, for example - banning anonymous riders on bills?

5. Do you wish the presidency to acquire the line item veto? That is to say, do you feel the office of the executive should have more power than it does now?

6. What is your favorite PC? Oh, sorry..  I meant to say ... How would you use technology such as the internet, blogs, and online forums - if you were elected president.(he asked me to type that as it is.. he had a judy woodward kind of look in his eye.. )

7. If your wife was attacked viciously right in front of you by a person who went on furlough from your prison release program, what would you do?

I would like you to ask Dodd (and the rest of the panel for that matter) if he/they support any measures to ensure privacy of personal information in light of what seems like every day news stories of company A losing a laptop with 500,000 social security numbers on it.

Ask ALL the democratic candidates that supported the war in 2002 who now oppose it this question......

You say you have the experience to be president BUT your experience led you to support a catastrophic mistake in iraq.......21 senators saw the same evidence and voted against the war.  Why should the Amnerican people trust your JUDGEMENT to be president?

Re: Questions for Chris Dodd or Other Candidates? (3.00 / 1)

I would ask him if he plans to raise taxes on the wealthy as a step towards reducing the federal spending deficit.  Edwards wasn't afraid to admit this was his intention, although that was in the context of health care.  An unequivocal "yes" is what I want to hear from all the candidates.  We can't keep running up debt!!

THe only way to take the money out of campaigns is to take the biggest cost out-- ad buys on media. The  way to do that is to require that all media give equal time or space, free, to qualified candidates. Will any of these candidates stand up for this?

2) What steps would he attempt as president to stop Global Warming?

4) Is he willing to repeal all the Bush tax cuts for persons making over x per year?  What is x?

Question for Chris Dodd (3.00 / 1)

Senator:
A recent resurgence of coal has seen production increase over the last decade. However, in West Virginia, 90% of coal jobs have been lost due to the automation of labor inherent in strip mining and mountaintop removal coal mining. How can we stop this destruction of eastern mountains and watersheds while still protecting miners jobs?
