Tom Daschle Announces He's Running for Vice President

According to press reports, Tom Daschle will be officially endorsing Barack Obama for president in the near future.  I say officially because for the past several months, many former Daschle staff members signed on with the Obama campaign and Daschle himself has had plenty of good things to say about Obama, even having never served with him in the senate.

What does the endorsement mean in political speak?  Daschle wants to be Obama's running mate.  Daschle would be a good match on an Obama ticket.  An experienced legislator, Daschle could be a valuable asset to Obama's lack of foreign policy and legislative skills.

Intriguing, but silly. I mean, how much foreign policy skill does Tom Daschle have? And as far as legislative skill goes, Daschle was a pretty ineffective Senate minority leader.

He was a pretty ineffective Senate Majority Leader, too.

I guess the FP stuff is just something you presume someone who spent 26 years in Congress would pick up, especially a member of the Democratic leadership.

I guess that means tons of other people are running for vp as well since they have endorsed Obama as well.
Hate to deflate your ego, Vox, but, so many people like and believe in Obama and are willing to endorse him and support him.
And guess what?  Horror of Horrors, vox, I sent money to his campaign.....oh no!

He's Running for Vice Pr (none / 0)

I can't think of any others who had presidential aspirations as recently 6 months ago who have endorsed anyone.  Daschle knows he would have to attach himself to a rising star to get anywhere.

I sent money to Edwards too, and when my tax return comes next week I'll be able to give a little more.

Ultimately I think we both agree our candidates are better than Hillary, and I surely support Obama over her.  Hopefully you feel the same about Edwards.

Dude, I'd have to give every other candidate a careful look, excepting Kusinich and Sharpton, before I'd even think of Hillary. Even then, since I live in a "safe" location I'd probably throw the Libertarians a vote in the General.

Plus (none / 0)

Daschle's lack of charisma would balance out Obama's excessive charisma.

Daschle never listened to the Clintons (none / 0)

And we saw how well he did as the incumbant in the last race for the Senate.   Daschle was a Bush appeaser.  Daschle is the old style soft Democrat who seems to love having Republicans punch his teeth down his throat.

Re: Daschle never listened to the Clintons (none / 0)

Daschle was the one who actually convinced Jeffords to switch sides.  He could have been more of a fighter, but he definitely didn't have many enemies.  Even he and John Thune, a probable Republican VP candidate, remain friends.

Daschle might be interested, but I don't think he would make any sense for Obama.  He has too much national baggage, but not enough upside.  What does he bring to a ticket that, say, Evan Bayh wouldn't?

Bayh sounds like he's perfect for the job, then.

Seriously, though, I don't think I'd advise Obama to take Bayh should he win the nomination, but I sure don't see the upside to Daschle.  From a purely strategic point of view, I'd rather have (off the top of my head) Bayh, Clark, Sebelius, Richardson, Vilsack, Warner, Webb, Schweitzer, Rendell, and probably a bunch of other people I'm not thinking of right now.  And those are just the people who might theoretically be interested in the job (so no Feingolds).
