Wes Clark: "War is not the answer"

From my Inbox...

All Americans want to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons and interfering on the ground inside Iraq.

Yet, President Bush's continued saber rattling gives the US little additional leverage to engage and dissuade Iran, and, more than likely, simply accelerates a dangerous slide into war. The United States can do better than this.

Whatever the pace of Iran's nuclear efforts, in the give and take of the Administration's rhetoric and accusations, we are approaching the last moments to head off looming conflict. Surely, it is past time to urge President Bush to exercise leadership and start to work now to avoid a widening of the conflict in the Middle East.

That's why today, I'm joining Jon Soltz, Chairman of VoteVets.org, the preeminent organization representing Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, to launch StopIranWar.com.

Visit StopIranWar.com. today and sign the petition to President Bush. War is not the answer.

StopIranWar.com.

StopIranWar.com is a one-stop resource for all Americans to help stop the looming conflict with Iran. With the latest news on Iran and online tools to contact President Bush, lobby your members of Congress, and write letters to the editor to local and national print media, StopIranWar.com will help us create the groundswell of support needed to stop another dangerous war in the Middle East.

Americans and their elected officials in Congress must work together to demand that President Bush stop the rush to war with Iran. The United States must use every option available to defuse tensions with Iran -- diplomatic, political, and economic -- before even considering military force. Military force must be viewed as the last resort -- not the first option.

Cannot the world's most powerful nation deign speak to the resentful and scheming regional power that is Iran? Can we not speak of the interests of others, work to establish a sustained dialogue, and seek to benefit the people of Iran and the region? Could not such a dialogue, properly conducted, begin a process that could, over time, help realign hardened attitudes and polarizing views within the region? And isn't it easier to undertake such a dialogue now, before more die, and more martyrs are created to feed extremist passions?

Visit StopIranWar.com. today and sign the petition to President Bush. War is not the answer.

StopIranWar.com

War with Iran is not the answer. We must work with our allies, talk with Iran, and use all diplomatic, political, and economic options at our disposal. Military force against Iran is not the solution now, and if we adopt the right strategy, perhaps it need never be.

Sincerely,

Wes Clark

I'm concerned about all these off-shoot movements... because I wonder if we are spreading ourselves too thin.  With American life as it is, people only have so much to time to commit to politics, causes etc.

For, example I'm off to my rep tomorrow via the MOVEON.ORG no-escalation drive, I personally would prefer to sit on my Senators door, but anyway I find it difficult to join up all the other offers than come through my email box every day... sometimes ~50 emails -- this is not effective.

Can't all the significant orgs... have a single focused drive -- diplomacy in the middle east vs. hawk crap-- get the troops out of a civil war etc.  Also, with Clark I presume he realizes that bases with US troops in Iraq is going to end up like Saudia Arabia?

Re: Wes Clark: StopIranWar.com: (none / 0)

Its just a petition drive.  I don't think it detracts from other movements all all.  But that is just my opinion.

Also, I'd be more willing to sign up for a single issue like this rather than sign up with moveon.  I feel like they've farmed my email out to 30 different organization and email action notices numerous times a day.

Re: Wes Clark: StopIranWar.com: (3.00 / 2)

General Clark and VoteVets.org are perfect for breaking the news about this crisis nationwide, to more mainstream voters than MoveOn or any of our own bloggers can ever reach, and if we really want to stop a war, that is exactly what must be done.

General Clark is the most decorated General since Ike. When he warns that a pending tragic and totally misguided war is about to begin it carries weight in circles that Noam Chompsky and Amy Goodman never penetrate. The StopIranWar.com web site is designed to be viewed across normal partisan lines to reach a broad range of Americans who are not as politically active as we tend to be here.  It bypasses ideological filters so that the message about likely war with Iran can be widely heard, even by voters who still believe that Rudy Guilliani is an American hero.

This is an initiative that we can break out of our normal channels with. This can and should be shared with neiggbors, in-laws, and co-workers regardless of their current political leanings.

Well, MoveOn is targeting the surge. Clark put out a petition against The Surge a while ago.

This one is to bring attention to the administration's apparent determination to attack Iran.

I can't think of nothing more critical to the country at this moment.

Re: "War is not the answer" (none / 0)

I agree... I just want things more focused.  I'm whinning.

I guess I WISH for more Networking of groups instead of different orgs all over the place ... e.g. David Sirota has his new movement, which is great, but I just don't have the time for both.

How can the Democratic Party leaders not see a genuine leader in their midst? Can't they see how he is helping the party ?
