BREAKING: Texas Orders All Girls To Get HPV Vaccine

Original post at TexasKaos.com
Wow! Texas just became the first state to order all its school-aged girls to get the controversial HPV vaccine. Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is a common cause of STDs and can lead to cervical cancer and other gynecological cancers.
Bypassing the Legislature, Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.
But why is it controversial? It's not except that some conservative groups believe girls with the vaccine will have more sex. That's right. These groups would rather expose young girls to HPV-related cancers than give them a vaccine that could save their lives.

Considering the kind of crap Texas gets for it's backward education system (it is!), it's archaic and crazy taxing system (it is), it's crazy politicians (John Cornyn), this is a great way to lead the nation in something that could really save lives and change people's attitudes.

So did Perry, who plays often to his anti-abortionist and religiously extreme base, suddenly grow some brains and a heart? Nope. Perry reasons for signing this executive order had nothing to his concern for "the safety and welfare of our children." The reason - the only reason - is that Merck, the maker of the vaccine, gave Perry alot of money and lobbied him hard.

Perry has several ties to Merck and Women in Government. One of the drug company's three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, Perry's former chief of staff. Perry also received $6,000 from Merck's political action committee during his re-election campaign.
Merck better get Perry a job too while they're at it, because once his base realizes they were sold out and Perry, like Tom Delay, has just been using these religious "wackos", Rick may need a new job.

And just in case, you needed a reminder that it wasn't his heart that changed but his bank account, here's a photo of Rick Perry at another signing. It was at a church, where he signed an Anti-abortion bill. It was at the same signing that he told gays to find some other state to live in.

So, it wasn't safety or intelligence that won. It was money. However, at least this time, young women and girls of Texas won't be losing to the political pressure of the religious reicht and the politicians who kiss up to them.

Yep, and for a mere $6k.

Also, Perry gets to tart himself up as if he were a moderate instead of a homophobic, racebaiting, paternilistic bigot.

Yeah, Merck will make over one billion dollars just on this vaccine if more states mandate it.  Its an unbelievable conflict of interest that they are the ones behind all these potential mandates.  All studies done on this vaccine (as well as most vaccines) are short term studies.  Vaccines, like drugs, all come with side effects.  And this young generation of girls will be our guinea pigs.  Those that believe the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks should have the right to get the vaccine.  Those that dont believe that, should not be mandated to get it.  I dont know about Texas, but most states allow for a philosophical exemption so you dont have to get the vaccine.  If we are going to live in a free country, the government should not interfere with our right to make health care decisions.

HPV and the Texas Cancer Plan (none / 0)

While I don't disagree that this will be a financial boon to Merck, it's important to remember that GlaxoSmithKline is soon to be seeking approval for its vaccine Cervarix. And others will follow.

Also while Perry's motives may seem suspect, remember Texas is angling to implement a new ambitious cancer eradication plan. The plan involves a $3 billion investment over 10 years to encourage cancer research in the state.

This could be the first step in that direction to build political will and encourage support.
