Obama and Oprah Live on C-Span and CNN

This is live from Des Moines, IA.

4:30P EST

I know many over here are in angst about Obama, even more so shivering about any possible Oprah effect, but just relax.  Enjoy the rally, feel the power, get engaged whether for Obama or not, to help your candidate win.

Hillary really needs all the help she can get.  She is coming down in the polls, state wide and nationally, so if you are so inflamed about the Oprah effect, take your @ssets to Iowa and help her out.

Go Obama.  Go Oprah.  Go Iowa.  We are watching history in the making.

C-Span is a right-wing outfit!!!

At least, that's what the fools around here will say?

Re: Obama and Oprah Live on C-Span and CNN (none / 0)

But didn't you know? "Oprah" is a 'Right-Wing Talking Point.'  Plus she's NOT truly 'Universal Health Care' because she has no mandates.  And she's attacking other Democrats by supporting Obama. She shouldn't be attacking other Democrats like that!

And to make matters worse she keeps 'flip-flopping' over her weight. She really needs to settle on a weight and stick to it.

Re: Obama and Oprah Live on C-Span and CNN (none / 0)

You'd think some of her supporters believe that Oprah is a Republican plant, because they know that Obama can't possibly win.

I think all this fuss reveals some intelligently  disguised tin foil hats, but what do I know.

Picture me rolling my eyes (none / 0)

1) Iowa is a three way dead heat.

2) Endorsements don't mean much.  Ask Howard Dean who scored Tom Harkin and Al Gore and went nowhere in Iowa.

3) Unless you want to cherry pick polls, Clinton is right where she was in the polls a few months ago.   Commanding everywhere but Iowa.

Lets all keep out feet on the ground and our eyes open.  Focus on reality.  If you have a "chill" I suggest a blanket.

Re: Picture me rolling my eyes (none / 0)

Wow, you must be feeling less heat, as in failing poll numbers, since you and your co-horts pandered, bragged, braced and wrapped yourselves in not only HRC's numbers but her inevitability.

I do think endorsements do not mean anything but Oprah Winfrey is in a place of her own.

She is a media mogul.  She is Harpo, Inc.  She is as well connected as Rupert Murdoch and when she says something, everyone listens.  People do not come on her show with their goods for nothing.  She moves them.  So, to think if Oprah says something and people don't listen, think again.  Did you see that packed auditorium?  They were standing shoulder to shoulder.  That speaks volumes.

And cherry picking polls.  I am now starting to pay attention, as I have always believed we would not see any real movement until December.

The Iowa Caucus is 3 weeks away.  The candidate that is hot is Barack Obama.  And as one caller called into C-Span after the event said, they love John Edwards but he will not have the money to compete until the end.  That is the make or break for Iowans about Edwards.  And the part of the story is how many will leave Edwards and land in Obama's camp.

I guess I think more of Democratic voters (none / 0)

I think the people who will caucus or vote in a primary are a little more independent in their views and not easily swayed by a celeb.

Now in a general Oprah would probably have more of an effect.  Some voters in the general make up the minds on the morning of election by deciding who has the best looking signs.

No thanks (2.00 / 1)

Oprah votes for "as many republicans as democrats", runs a non union show and helped elect bush twice.  Obama uses old right wing smears against Clinton.  We might as well put on the republican youtube debate.  At least they are honest about who they are.

ABO... Anybody but Obama. I LIKE the democratic party.

Re: No thanks (2.00 / 1)

Oh, please with the sour grapes.  If Oprah was for Clinton or Edwards, they would have been over the moon, and Clinton did go after Oprah for her support.  Go after Oprah, just like they did in Texas.  She won that case and folks loved her even more.  What happened today and for the rest of this weekend is breathtaking.  Those people were there to hear something to move them.  HRC nor Edwards can compete here.  They can't.  This is on every major media market was pre-empted on CNN and FOX!!!  This will be on all the news shows tomorrow and all day Monday.

Obama is emerging, the caucus is three weeks away, folks are breaking, and it is for him.

Re: No thanks (none / 0)

Helped elect Bush twice?  Seems you've forgotten Bush wasn't elected.  Gore was, but of course Gore wouldn't fight for what was his. Nor would Kerry.  But sure, it's Oprah's fault. And it was her fault that Gore was a stiff on her show.  Yes, let's attack Oprah who does more good on her show than anyone in show business.

Oprah gave Bush & Gore equal time (none / 0)

Some blamed Gore for not being politically savvy enough to kiss Oprah but there's no evidence that had any impact:

Bush went on Oprah September 19, 2000.  The day before he went on
her show (sept 18) Gore had a 5 point lead over Bush.  The day after
Bush went on Oprah (sept 20) Gore had a 6 point lead over Bush.  Two
days after Bush went on Oprah (sept 21st) Gore had a 10 point lead
over Bush. So Bush got no bounce from going on Oprah, and actually
went down in the polls.  Bush didn't take the lead in the race until
Sept 24 (a full 5 days after his Oprah appearance)but by October 5,
Gore recaptured the lead beating Bush by 11 points.
Gore on the other hand did get a bounce when he appeared on Oprah
September 11, 2000. The day before the appearance he was beating Bush
by 3 points.  The day after he had doubled his lead to 6 points.

http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS /stories/10/06/tracking.poll/index.html

And Oprah never had Bush on her show again.

It's really quite idiotic to blame every TV show Bush ever appeared on for getting him elected.

What about the debate moderators. Did they get Bush elected too?  What about Bill Clinton's sex scandal and all the fundraising diverted to Hillary's senate election? Did that cost Gore the election too?

This is sad.  Opponents angry because Oprah endorsed Obama, and they are left out in the cold.  Keep it up.  Oprah is bigger, much bigger than this lowly blog.

Meanwhile HRC and Edwards actually voted to go to war... we certainly cannot blame the pols that actually gave bush the power to invade iraq without even bothering to read the NIE, can we?

oh, no.. voting in the senate without doing your homework..and in edwards case sponsoring the amendment to go to war...

they are blameless, right? LOL

Re: Obama and Oprah Live on C-Span and CNN (none / 0)

Oprah did more to try to prevent America from going to war than anyone else in mainstream media.  As early as the Fall of 2001 she did a show called "Is War the Only Answer?"  Unfortunately that shows sparked the worst and most vicious hate mail of her career.  Then a few months later when she declined an invitation to go to Afghanistan with Bush, people were furious that she would defy a sitting president during a time of war.  All of this made her extremely fearful to dissent and for a while her show was extremely careful not to be seen as unpatriotic.  But when a woman in her audience questioned the propaganda the media was feeding them Oprah realized she had a moral responsibility.

By November 2002, she gathered enough courage to do a show challenging her audience to question their government's foreign policy.  The show was praised by Michael Moore because she was the only mainstream media to show clips of Donald Rumsfeld shaking Saddam Hussein's hand.  Then on February 6 & 7 2003, while the rest of the media was praising Collin Powell's United Nation's speech, Oprah told her audience that now more than ever was the time to speak out. It was a crucial time to speak out because public opinion had been against the war prior to Powell's speech.  Oprah showed clips from average people all over the world begging America not to go to war. She showed clips of Nelson Mandella & Pope John Paul II denouncing war.  She interviewed the founder of Patriots for Peace. She hosted a debate between Thomas Friedman and anti-war activist Jessica Mathews who informed her audience that there were no links between Saddam and Al Quada & even Friedman conceded that Iraq was not a security threat to the U.S.  And the end of the debate Oprah agreed with Mathews that the case for war had not been made.  The show was so anti-war that it was allegedly taken off the air half way through in some markets.

Amazingly Oprah continued to air dissent right up until 2 days before the war began.  On March 18, 2003 she invited anti-war Middle East professor Fawaz Gerges and spent an entire segment showing shocking antiwar clips from Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine followed by anti-war commentary from Moore.

Oprah did everything in her power short of career suicide to prevent a war.  Donahue spoke out against war too, but he had a tiny audience on MSNBC.  Oprah was the ONLY major media to join the anti-war movement and she deserves an enormous amount of credit for that.  Not only is she a symbol of the American dream and the most philanthropic African-American of all time, but she was on the right side of history too.

And speaking of videos, here's Hillary actually speaking neocon talking points:

Oprah may have let necons come on her show, but Hillary actually transformed into one herself.
