I understand Sen. Obama's going to be on Meet the Press this Sunday and I thought I'd help Timmeh out by writing up a few questions for the good Senator. Obama's been on the campaign trail for about a year now, and in all that time there are more than a few questions that ought to be answered. Sure, some have been raised and we've gotten a lot of excuses and dodges, but far too few answers have been offered up.
So here's a Letterman's Top Twenty list for Russert (ok so there are more than 10). It'd be nice if Russert could raise a few of these, and even nicer if we could get some answers before the voting actually starts next week.
No intro here - we'll just jump in to and see what happens eh?
1 You're constantly talking about those who voted for the war resolution in 2002, but what exactly did you do to help stop the Iraq war:
Before joining the senate (besides that one speech of course)?
After joining the senate?
2 Why haven't you convened a single policy meeting of your subcommittee? Or spent more than a day anywhere in Europe since taking up the chairmanship of your subcommittee? (From the London Times - 'Stay-at-home' Barack Obama comes under fire for a lack of foreign experience)
3 You say you've traveled extensively in Europe before being elected to the Senate? Where exactly have you been - and when? (The Iowa Independent has been trying to pin this all down HERE and HERE).
4 If Kyl / Lieberman was such a huge deal, why:
didn't you interrupt your campaigning to make it back to DC for the vote?
didn't you mention the vote during the debate on Sept..26th - even after Gravel brought it up?
did you wait 2 weeks before mentioning it on the campaign trail?
5 If elected, what exactly would you do one day one to affect this change you speak of in Washington?
6 Regarding the times when yours was the sole "present" vote in the IL Senate, you told us it was because a bill was unconstitutional. Why didn't you just vote no on those bills?
7 Why haven't you disavowed the hateful and homophobic message of McLurkin?
8 Why haven't you disavowed David Axelrod's claim that Hillary's vote led to Bhutto's assassination. And more to the point - why did you defend it on CNN Friday?
9 Can you explain how you can now say you want to give the Pakistanis a chance to investigate Bhutto's murder, when just months ago you said you'd bomb the country if they failed to cooperate in tracking down bin Laden?
10 Give us a few examples of this moral courage you speak of. Tells about the tough fights that you've fought when no one else was in the battle?
11 Why does Tom Daschle - a lobbyist - have a prominent role in your campaign, and would you let him have influence if you are elected? ( http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/ statements/32/ )
12 If you get the Democratic nomination, how do you plan to deal with the "swiftboat" attacks from the republicans and their surrogates used in past elections?
13 You speak of moral courage but yet you stop short of covering everyone in your healthcare plan by leaving some 15 million Americans without healthcare coverage. Why stop short of universal healthcare when the other candidates are pushing for everyone's inclusion?
14 If you're against mandates, why do you mandate that children be covered in your plan?
15 Why did you attack Paul Krugman with opposition research and right wing talking points?
16 Speaking of right wing talking points... Social Security crisis????
17 Why do you consider Robert Novak a credible news source? (Remember that rumor he started about Hillary having dirt on him?).
18 Why didn't you stand up for YearlyKos the way Hillary did?
19 Why did you skip the MoveOn vote????
I know Timmeh will never ask this one and this is really more tongue in cheek as there's only one source on this, but I'd sure like to get an answer on something I saw on line today. I mention this more to point out how (if this really happened) they didn't learn much from what Hillary's camp went through in Iowa!
20 After the way you went after Hillary over the whole Maid Rite tip fiasco, would you care to explain why you and your staff only left a 5% tip for dinner and totally stiffed the bartender when they went to The Commercial Street Fishery in Manchester NH.( http://greenmountainpolitics1.blogspot.c om/2007/12/hey-big-spender.html )
Right then... that's 20 questions. If we could get good solid answers to even half of them it'd be a great start.
