Virginia Not a Red State

Virginia might not be a full on blue state yet despite electing a Democratic state Senate in November, a new Democratic Senator in 2006, and a new Democratic Governor in 2005 -- but it's certainly not the red same state it was just a few short years ago. Take a look at the latest numbers out of the state, via Pollster.com.

Clinton 52%, Giuliani 42%
Clinton 53%, Romney 40%
Clinton 54%, Huckabee 40%
Clinton 48%, McCain 46%

Obama 48%, Giuliani 45%
Obama 50%, Romney 43%
Obama 51%, Huckabee 42%
McCain 50%, Obama 44%

As you can see, the Democrats lead in all but one of the permutations polled by SurveyUSA and are at or above 50 percent in all but two. Virginia might not have voted for a Democratic presidential nominee since Lyndon Johnson, but it sure looks like Virginians would strongly consider voting for one this time around. And if you take the commonwealth's 13 electoral votes out of the Republicans' stack, along with states like Iowa and New Mexico and even Ohio and Arkansas, and all of the sudden it becomes awfully difficult, if not impossible, for the GOP to find the magical 270.

Re: Virginia Not a Red State (2.00 / 1)

I am sooo glad Edwards has dropped out...
He has dropped out right?
After all he is not listed here and Mr. Singer would not give credence to a poll leaving Edwards out...

What happens when a candidate that apparently has dropped out wins in Iowa?

I even went to http://johnedwards.com/
expecting to see Edwards' declaration that he has dropped out..
Nothing there..
Confusion is floating down like those crystal things now coming down in our Denver sky

Re: Virginia Not a Red State (2.00 / 1)

And people wonder why Democrats don't have a lot of faith in Obama's ability to win an election. These kind of things just reinforce that belief.

Re: Virginia Not a Red State (none / 0)

You mean b/c in one state he does slightly worse in GE matchups, but still beats most of the GOP nominees?  Not sure I follow your logic...

Virginia may not be a red state (1.00 / 1)

But I'm pretty much counting on it going that way in November 2008.  Obama or no Obama.

Of coure, the phenomenon you describe didn't occur at all with Harold Ford in TN last cycle.  And Edwards and Hillary both remain better known in states that don't vote early than does Obama.  But other than that, sure you are completely vindicated.

Would like to confirm it with a new Warner/Gilmore poll. Dont want to be surprised as I was when I saw the ARG poll on the NH Senate race.

Re: Virginia Not a Red State (2.00 / 1)

Viriginia wasn't a red state in '04, but the powers that be decided it was and didn't even try here. As someone who moved into VA in 03, I was appalled at how many Democrats were here, and no attampt was made to get their votes. It could have turned in '04, but the idiots didn't even try.

Re: Virginia Not a Red State (none / 0)

I agree. People want an alternative to Hillary, whom they worry is unelectable. Edwards is a proven loser, right or wrong, and Obama is seen by many as the only real alternative despite no experience, no positions, etc..

It will take another "Macaca moment" for Obama to pick up steam in VA.
