My WA. St. Caucus - 2004

The following is taken from something I posted at Wes Clark's site to one of the regulars there. I believe she is supporting Clinton and she knows I am supporting Edwards.

I hope it gives some people some good ideas.

Remember that I had never been to a caucus before.

By the time our caucus came around I had become sick of the media basically telling us that Kerry had the nomination. I was like... BullShit!   ;)

Now, I believe I did all of this the night before or maybe the morning of, I really don't recall. I should have started sooner and passed on my info.

1) I found a map of the USA online that was just a black out line of all the states borders, including Hawaii and Alaska in the lower left.

2) I put that map in a word doc and added some information to it.

3) On the top of the word doc (map) I noted how many delegates are needed to be nominated. I also noted how many delegates had been awarded so far.
 (I can not find a solid number for this, with some of the states being "punished" I think people are confused. Contact your state party or the DNC for more info.)

4) Below that I listed ALL of the Democratic candidates and how many delegates each had.
 - example:

Kerry = 26
Edwards = 18
Clark = 10
so on...
and the rest...

5) I marked off the states that had caucused or had primaries. I put a BOLD X through them, keeping within their 'borders'.

6) I added this statement: "Don't Let The Media Tell You Who To Vote For". I believe I placed this at the bottom.

7) I printed out many copies of this map.

8) At caucus I wore my Clark04 shirt, no coat to hide it.
I brought my 'maps'.
I got there early and brought Clark signs (some near me and some posted in the building).
When people saw that I was supporting Clark, they would say things like "I like Clark but Kerry has this won" or I like Clark but I am going to vote for X because Clark has no chance".
I basically got talking to people (even ones not in my precinct) and let them know that it was far far from being over. This made them stop and think. I gave some of them my maps and explained it to them.

9) In my caucus I talked up Clark, knew my facts, was passionate (nervous as HELL/talked to much).
I gave everyone in my caucus a map and explained it to them. I asked them to "not let the media tell them who to vote for".
Everyone who 'was' for Clark, but were going to vote for another, voted for Clark. Others... some of them came my way.

It was very successful and exciting, I left thinking that if all of the other Clarkies, that I had been working with, did similar things we should be doing well that day. But... they didn't and we/Clark didn't do well over all.

All the other Clarkies were amazed at how well I did and agreed that they should have done something similar.

This year will be different (the bunched up states and "punished states") but still some of the tactics I used could and should work. I believe that map was the best part.

Take a look at these links and you may see why it will be so different:

You need to KNOW the rules of the caucus for YOUR state. Take a copy of the rules with you, I wish I had done this. Understand them the best you can. Most people know very little about the rules. They just do as they are told.

By the way, I do recall having posted my 'map' online and letting people at the CCN know where it was so they could download it. I have no idea if they ever did. The map is now long gone.

Good luck. I hope this helps a little.
