McCain is alive in New Hampshire

Grandpa Fred has apparently awoken and is campaigning daily in Iowa. If Romney and Huckabee continue to go to war, whose to say that Thompson doesn't exceed expectations and gain some press? That seems to be a familiar speculative train of thougt that hasn't any reality in the polls yet.

Here's one that does: McCain is alive and well in New Hampshire.

Rasmussen:
            Now Earlier
Romney 31 34 32
McCain 27 15 16
Giuliani 13 15 17
Huckabee 11 14 10
Paul 7 8 4
Thompson 3 3 7

CNN/WMUR:
            Now Earlier
Romney 34 32 33
McCain 22 19 18
Giuliani 16 19 16
Huckabee 10 9 5
Paul 5 7 8
Thompson 1 1 4
Some poll thoughts for NH Republicans: Paul's problem is that the war in Iraq is becoming a boring issue according to the media and he doesn't come across on TV all that well. The problem for McCain in New Hampshire has always been Giuliani, who might be fading. Romney is in 'hang on' mode, and if a Huckabee victory happens in Iowa, that really makes things interesting in New Hampshire. If Clinton wins Iowa, which Republican does it help the most? McCain/Lieberman?

Re: McCain is alive in New Hampshire (2.00 / 1)

yeah, i tend to think so. if Clinton wins Iowa and her current 3/9/12 point lead stabilizes/increases, as does the media theme that the Dem nomination is a done deal, then the more 'fun' election will be on the GOP side, so I'd have to think it would increase turnout over there and that, in turn, will help both McCain and Paul.

and, actually, that also helps Clinton, since she polls better among rank and file Dems than among independents.

Re: McCain is alive in New Hampshire (none / 0)

I'm scared of McCain's electability but I wonder how much even an outright victory in NH could help him. Unlike Kerry 04, McCain's name recognition is pretty much 100 across the country. If Republican voters haven't decided to support him by now it's for a reason -- or multiple reasons (immigration, campaign finance, occasionally taking a token independent stand). I think the only way he could get the nomination is in a brokered convention, into which I think he'd go better positioned than anyone else.

If the Republicans have any sense at all... (none / 0)

...they'll nominate McCain. He needs Willard and Huck to destroy each other.

Clinton is lucky (none / 0)

that McCain has looked like a no-hoper since the summer. It has caused a lot of Democrats to think that electability isn't a big deal.

Obama's been getting overwhelmingly positive media coverage this year compared to Edwards and Clinton. That would change in a nanosecond if he had to run against McCain (media darling) in the general.

Re: Clinton is lucky (none / 0)

I tend to agree more with your post, than the title. I don't think it's just Clinton who is lucky that the Republicans are overlooking McCain.  I think any of the Big 3 Dems could beat McCain, but it would be harder.  He's crazy and wrong, but not nearly as crazy and wrong as the rest of the Republican field.  He's, like, mainstream crazy and wrong.  And he still inexplicably has reporters who love him, witness the fawning bio in the WaPo, and is still known for his "straight talk" even after clearly abandoning that for pandering to the base (not that it helped him).

Re: Clinton is lucky (none / 0)

It's funny, two years ago, I was rabidly anti-McCain, because of all the pandering.  But partly because he does seem to have recovered some of his principles -- his refusal to pander on torture, for example -- and partly because he's the least frightening of the top candidates.  I would much rather have a President McCain than a Guiliani, Romney, or Huckabee.

I dont see huck gaining anything? (none / 0)

I'm sorry but the polls don't seem to reflect that huck is gaining?

I seem to have heard somewhere that he was, but i dont see any updated polling that would suggest he's in the hunt?

IMHO McCain can light up NH he is popular there (none / 0)

I think McCain can make the race interesting. huck is supposed to be gaining in SC, the GOP race is going to be more of a fist fight.

But Ron Paul will declare independent and siphon off their voters.

Re: McCain is alive in New Hampshire (none / 0)

I think Thompson could do sorta okay as the social conservative who's not too over the top.  He could be a sleeper candidate in every sense of the word.

Re: McCain is alive in New Hampshire (none / 0)

Liebermans revenge, Mccain Lieberman would crushHillary so bad in the general election it wouldn't be funny. Dems nominate their most polarizing unlikeable candidate and the GOP goes with the guy that appeals to moderates and swing voters whom almost no one personally dislikes. Then he picks Joe L and appears to be reaching out to unify the country to the average voter.  Don't say we weren't warned Hillary ends our argument for change as a party.

With Hillary (none / 0)

The number of people who would vote against her on principle is already set: 40%. Other candidates have an unknown quantity of haters, and I think Hillary is hated in many cases simply "because." Many Repubs view McCain as a Dem in sheep's clothing, so I don't worry about a matcup with McCain.

Re: With Hillary (none / 0)

yeah all those repubs will stay home and not vote for McCain against Hillary, sure Repubs despise her like the devil they would turnout no matter who is their nominee, the problem is all the indies will for McCain Lieberman over Hillary on personal qualities.

Re: McCain is alive in New Hampshire (2.00 / 1)

Actually, against the extreme-hawk positions of McCain and Lieberman, Clinton would be the best positioned because she would have everything to the left of extreme hawk in the general election, including the center.

A Democratic ticket waving the white flag in the global war on terror would be the worse positioning because centrist voters would have to look either right or left for their decision.

The strategic goal of any general election campaign is to wall-off your opponents from the largest possible range on the political spectrum. With McCain being so extreme on national security, you want to build the Democratic wall as close to the center as possible and prevent McCain from appealing to centrist voters on national security.

Re: McCain is alive in New Hampshire (none / 0)

a dimes worth a difference people will vote for the person they like. Hillary's only chance is to destroy the gop nominee as unacceptable McCain will be impossable to do that to.

That's a great argument for nominating Reese Witherspoon, don't you think?

Re: McCain is alive in New Hampshire (none / 0)

The other imperative for Democrat going up against McCain:

The Democrat must, without question, cross the commander-in-chief threshold. Any questions about the Democratic candidate being "tough enough" to handle national security would be instant defeat at the hands of McCain.

McCain would make mince-meat of any Democrat proposing that Iran would be no problem if we just gathered round the campfire with Ahmadinejad roasting marshmellows and joining in a rousing chorus of Kumbayah.

this is how neocons taunt democrats unwilling to unilaterally nuke iran.

Re: McCain is alive in New Hampshire (none / 0)

I wonder if McCain can do anything with it?

I'm having trouble seeing him take a NH victory anywhere.

McCain will be the GOP nominee (none / 0)

I've said it before and I will say it again--McCain will be the nominee.  I think Edwards would be best against him, but I don't think he's getting the nomination.

McCain may be alive in the polls but he looks dead in real life. He looks like he just walked out of a hospice. What strength? What exerience? Give that man a cane!

The Republican field is going to be fun. I'm keeping my fingers crossed no one receives enough delegates and it come to a convention showdown here in the Twin Cities.

They'd probably match Rudy, Mitt or McCain with a Fundie.
