Reid Gives In To Dodd, Pulls FISA Bill For Now

This is great news. From ChrisDodd.com:

Majority Leader Harry Reid has just pulled the FISA bill from consideration in this session. It will be brought up at some point next month. [...]

For now, the FISA debate is over. It will come up again down the road, but for now everyone who supported Senator Dodd's leadership against retroactive immunity and supported his promise to filibuster should be proud of their work to defend the Constitution and the rule of law.

Thanks to Senator Dodd for leading so aggressively on this issue today and to everyone who rose up to support him. As Tim Tagaris wrote at dailyKos, "this was a team victory."

Today demonstrated in stark terms the extent to which, despite having a majority on paper, the Democrats really have a functional minority in the senate. Thanks to Chris Dodd and others, for a change today we were a very vocal, very passionate and very effective one.

You bet...
of course Clinton..Obama..Biden did not commit to being there prior to this...

There is no table...
There is no compromise...
Anyone who watched c-span...

It will be awhile...shit States who hated America and conducted terrorist attacks...still cling to the myth almost 150 years later...

If Edwards was not running...Dodd..
don't get me wrong.. Dennis K has been right all along but he lacks the push.....

If Obama was able to cut the strings like Edwards did...well it would be a tougher choice....

Exceptionally Good News (none / 0)

Dodd, Tagaris, Kos, MyDD and everyone in the netroots who supported this effort deserve major, big time praise.

The poll at Kos from this morning (with over 15,000 votes) showed 91% of the readership disapproving of the way Harry Reid is doing his job as Senate Majority Leader. Those are just devastating numbers for Reid.

Ultimately, it is Harry Reid who will decide whether corporations that broke federal law with Bush will be given immunity. Harry Reid controls what the Senate will, and will not, debate. And yes, you can talk about pressure from Republicans or fellow Democrats on Reid, but the buck stops with Reid.

Bottom line:  I do not think the netroots will EVER forgive Harry Reid if he decides to grant this immunity.

What is wrong with being a really good Senator?

How do you mean? There is nothing with being a really good Senator. But I think he could be a good President too. I am not sure why no one else seems to think so... Thats all I was saying.. If he remains in the Senate then the Senate will be better off.. But he'd be a good President too and its sad to see so few democrats giving him even a look.

Re: Reid Gives In To Dodd, Pulls FISA Bill For Now (none / 0)

Its not a matter of people being unwilling to give him a look it is the fact that he has been unable to create a compelling narrative in regards to his candidacy. He would make an excellent President, but he is not a particularly good candidate in this atmosphere. Edwards has "the two America's," Obama is basically a rock star, and Clinton is a Clinton... and than you have Kucinich and Gravel making up the Kook wing of the party. That sucks all of the O2 out of the room and keeps candidates like Dodd from being able to make any real noise.
