Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor

Chris Dodd is speaking on the floor right now.

The idea that we can become more secure by giving up rights is so fundamentally flawed.

Update [2007-12-17 15:43:32 by Todd Beeton]:Kagro X has an update on what's going on with FISA:

Currently on the Senate floor: continuing debate on the motion to proceed to consideration of the Intel committee version of the new FISA bill.

Earlier today, a cloture motion passed by a vote of 76-10. That means a maximum of 30 hours of debate remained on the motion. They're not debating the bill yet, even though that's the subject they're talking about on the floor.

Tim Tagaris with the Dodd campaign has a good clearing house for information on the FISA debate over at dailyKos.

Be sure to contact your senator to urge them to oppose telecom immunity HERE.

Update [2007-12-17 16:34:25 by Todd Beeton]:Chris Dodd for majority leader? Hell yes.

And just to clarify, what's going on on the floor of the senate right now isn't a debate on the bill itself but rather this is an extended post-cloture debate where senators get to express their opinions. Currently Jeff Sessions is speaking and called resistance to telecom immunity as coming from the "leftist blame America first crowd." What an ass. I hope Dodd gets up to hit back at Sessions for this.

The Dodd amendment to strip telecom immunity from the bill will be the first amendment to be considered. Assuming it doesn't pass, Dodd will commence his filibuster later today.

Update [2007-12-17 17:44:32 by Todd Beeton]:Chris Dodd is speaking on the floor right now but this is not the filibuster yet.

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

Why doesn't Dodd call out Reid directly?  Reid had not business putting this bill forward.  He's acting like the fucking Republican leader, not the Democrat people thought they elected and he should be called on it by every progressive leader, everywhere they go, including on the floor of the Senate.  This kind of crap should end his career.

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

Are Clinton and Obama there supporting his effort, as they promised they would be?

They didn't vote.

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

This should bother me more than it does I fear. I would like nothing more than for them to be there. That being said, I understand the importance of what they are undertaking as well and as someone who is leaning towards Obama I can't be too upset that he is out on the campaign trail right now.

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

How many votes is it OK for him to miss though?  Especially on important issues like this, I think he should keep his promises.  Hillary too.  I guess I shouldn't expect so much from them.

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

If it comes down to a cloture vote, which it will, then being absent is effectively the same as voting no, because it requires 60 votes (3/5 of the total number of senators) regardless of how many senators are present.

Moral support (none / 0)

Sort of like walking by a person trapped in a pit and saying "Gee I'm sorry you're stuck down there".

Such courage, such inspiration, such leadership.

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

Chris Dodd for majority leader?  Hell, no.  Dodd for President.

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

Dodd would make an excellent President...but I honestly think he would be more useful to the cause as majority leader. Dodd would actually take on the Republicans...He would probably force them to filibuster rather than just concede the way Reid does.

Here is the truth about Reid. He is more of an R than a D. He should be primaried at every opportunity and he should certainly be replaced as Majority Leader.

How long can a 63 year old man stay up? We're going to found out.

I wonder if we should send his office some folgers...

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

Putting it off until January, after the holiday recess. Sounds like a good thing to avoid yet again handling FISA in the last-minute rush before adjourning. They'd better get to it right away, though, and not let it drag until the expiration of the temporary fix approaches and causes another opportunity for passing a horrible bill because "we have to pass something!"

Re: Chris Dodd on the Senate Floor (none / 0)

This has been bungled continually (as have many things,) by this congress. It would be nice to see an actual debate and a good bill come out of this and more importantly it would be nice if the democratic leadership would stand up to Bush in the new year.
