The Draft Udall Campaign Relaunches

Update - 1:56am by Adam: I just found this great video of Udall at this weekend's State Central Committee meeting saying he's thinking about running from the indispensable NM blogger barbwire at Democracy for New Mexico. She writes: "Udall entered the hall to a standing ovation, loud chants of "Run, Tom, Run" and a multitude of waving signs urging the same." Draft Udall!

We get press releases:

The Draft Tom Udall for US Senate movement unveiled its newly redesigned website (http://draftudall.com).  The Draft Udall site relaunch caps a week of significant momentum to encourage Congressman Udall to run for New Mexico's open Senate seat which included numerous reports that Udall was reconsidering his decision to run for the US Senate due in no small part to the Draft Udall movement.

"Our target has always been to get our message out to one person, my Congressman and the next Senator from New Mexico, Tom Udall," said New Mexican and Draft Udall founder Alex Flores.  "Draft Udall has given a voice to countless New Mexicans and other Americans who want to see a true progressive fighting alongside Senator Bingaman in the United States Senate."

Since its launch one month ago on October 3rd, the Draft Udall movement has gained support from across New Mexico and the country, gathering over 500 petition signatures and more than 100 donations with more pledged if Udall declares for the Senate.  The site also includes roundups of coverage that the Draft Udall movement has received on the internet and from mainstream media (http://draftudall.com/?page_id=3).

The new Draft Udall site allows for donations to be made to Tom Udall's federal campaign account via the online fundraising clearinghouse ActBlue, to sign a petition supporting Tom Udall to run for US Senate, and to send a message of encouragement to Rep. Udall.

The redesign work was donated by noted web designer Kyle Stoneman (http://kylestoneman.com).

Check out the new site -- it really looks cool. Coming on the heels of news that Udall is reconsidering his decision not to run for Senate (i.e. he's now thinking about running), this relaunch from DraftUdall.com provides a good opportunity to remind folks that now's the time to send Congressman Udall a clear signal that we think he should run by making a small, but meaningful $5 contribution to his campaign through ActBlue and signing the petition asking him to run.

Flores is right: New Mexicans do want a real fighting progressive working beside Jeff Bingaman in the United States Senate, and Tom Udall is just that man. So head over to DraftUdall.com today and get involved.

Fingers crossed for a Udall entry but for the moment even Chavez holds a lead according to new numbers produced for Roll Call.

Good to see Norm Coleman struggling in MN and Mark Udall moving ahead in CO.

Let's make a New Senator For New Mexico! (none / 0)

Cheering y'all on.

To my mind, this is exactly what you want a draft movement to do.  Running for Senate-risking political capital saved over years, giving up a usually secure seat to spend over a year of putting your family's whole focus on the challenge-is a huge decision for any politician.

Part of that is wondering who can be counted on to help.  That's what a draft movement can do.  Show him he's not in the fight alone-and show everybody else that too.

Run, Tom, Run!!!

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

Re: The Draft Udall Campaign Relaunches (none / 0)

Regarding New Mexico- It is going to be a Democratic Pickup regardless who the nominee is.
Richardson leads Wilson/Pearce by a 20 point margin based on high name recogniton and huge statewide popularity. Richardson has crossover appeal. Regarding Denish and Chavez- they lead Wilson/Pearce by a single digit margin. Denish- is a two term LT Governor- She has not been elected to statewide office on her own- LT Governors - LT Governors are elected with the Governors. Chavez- lost a statewide election in 1998 against a Republican incumbent Governor and he is currently a Mayor of a Big City. Chavez is unpopular with Liberal Democrats. Viviott trails Pearce and Wilson- that is due to lack of name recognition- but in a matchup against Viviott- Pearce and Wilson are polling below 50%.
If Richardson is the nominee- NM is a safe Democratic pickup- Richardson defeats Wilson/Pearce by a 15 to 20 percent margin. margin.- similar to a Casey-Santorum(2006 PA Race matchup) Wilson/Pearce would be forced to drop out if Big Bill were to run.
Regarding Udall,Denish, and Chavez. Udall has won two statewide election - State Attorney General prior to be electing to Congress. He is extremely popular in Democratic leaning NM-3 Northern NM House District- He won his House Races by a 70% of the popular vote- 15 points ahead of Kerry's vote percentage in NM-3. Compare that to Pearce's vote margin in NM-2(Southern NM) is 60%. same as Bush's vote margin in in NM-2. In NM-1- Wilson almost lost her seat the last election.
Udall vs Wilson/Pearce matchup will be a Likely Democratic Pickup. Udall will defeat Wilson or Pearce by a 10-15 point margin similar to Brown/Dewine (2006 OH Senate Race)matchup. Denish is a popular statewide official but this is a first time she has faced the voters.  Denish defeats Wilson on the issue of corruption and Pearce on this issue of extremism. Denish like Udall and unlike Chavez is popular with the Liberal Democratic Base. A Denish vs Pearce/Wilson matchup will be a Lean Democratic Pickup. Denish will defeat Pearce/Wilson by a 5-10 point margin similar to a Whitehouse/Chafee(2006 RI Senate Race)matchup.
Chavez is despised by Liberal Democrats but he won the Mayor of ABQ office with the support of Conservative Democrats and Independents- Chavez is relying on the weaknesses of the GOP rivals- Pearce is too conservative to win and Wilson is too corrupt. The Liberal Democratic Base might reluctantly support Chavez- following Rumsfeld quote You win a Senate race with the candidate you have not the candidate you want. or they might vote Third Party or Stay Home. Chavez leads Wilson/Pearce by a less than 5% margin.
Viviott is a political unknown- HE is a fresh face contender but he has money- He can self finance his campaign- Viviott victory becomes an upset.
On the Democratic Side. Denish is running for Governor in 2010 to succeed Bill Richardson- Denish might be Governor before 2010.
If Richardson enters the Senate Race after his Presidential run fails- All of the Democratic contenders (Chavez,Viviott, etc)that are in the race drops out. He wins the Democratic Primary unopposed. Richardson creams his GOP rivals by a landslide margin.
If Udall enters the Senate Race- Their will be a Primary on the Democratic Side and the Republican side. Udall defeats Chavez in the Democratic Primary by a landside margin. He defeats his GOP rival in the General election by a double digit margin.
Without Bill Richardson or Tom Udall- Martin Chavez wins the Democratic Nomination and ends up winning in the General Election.
