Bill Richardson Rising

This is part of the candidate series on MyDD. I'm not part of the Richardson campaign.

In terms of the debate in Las Vegas, I felt Richardson had one of his strongest performances to date in the race.  Under Bush the CIA has become global paramilitary force operating prisons in multiple countries.  Is this the image we want for America?  Richardson's answer is an emphatic "no."  Richardson stated America should be the conscience of the world, not the world's policeman.  Richardson showed his political courage.  He refused to join Edwards, Dodd, Biden and Clinton in embracing poll-driven politics on the issue drivers' licenses for illegal immigrants.

Richardson did an excellent job distinguishing himself from Clinton, Obama and Edwards on the issues and style of the campaign:

You know, it seems that John wants to start a class war.  It seems that Barack wants to start a generational war. It seems that Senator Clinton, with all due respect on her plan on Iraq, does not have a plan to end the war. All I want to do is give peace a chance. I say that because these are the fundamental issues. Do our plans end the war? Do our plans make America energy independent? Do our plans give health care to every American? Are we creating jobs and economic growth? Are we resolving the real problems affecting this country? Let us stop this mudslinging. Let us stop going after one another on character and trust. Let us debate the issues that affect the American people, and let us be positive.

Richardson reiterated the centerpiece of his campaign - to promptly bring ALL American troops home from Iraq:

We should not be talking about body counts. One DaviAmerican death is too many. The surge is not working. There is now less of a possibility of a political solution. Three out of the 18 benchmarks of the General Accounting Office have been fulfilled. Even for Republican math, that is a failing grade. The Iraqi people now say that it is okay to shoot an American soldier. Our troops are dying. Unlike my colleagues, my plan does not leave any forces behind. We should not just wave goodbye; we need a U.S.-led political compromise. The Sunni, Shia, and Kurds should share power and oil revenues. The European Union and rich Arab states should contribute to the reconstruction of Iraq. We have spent $500 billion on this war. Instead, this money should be used in America for health care, education, and on kids.

My impressions of Edwards and Obama were that they stumbled badly at times.  Edwards seemed to disappear from the stage during the audience Q&A portion of the debate.  Obama with disturbing frequency talks like a hawk on foreign affairs and national security issues.  Clinton did well in fending off their attacks, but her criticism of Obama for suggesting an increase in social security payroll taxes would hurt the middle class was baseless.

Journalists have praised Richardson's performance, including David Yepsen of the Des Moines Register and Chuck Todd of NBC.  Yepsen observed that Richardson and Dodd "turned in articulate, presidential-style performances during the evening."

In other good news for Ricahardson's campaign, the latest poll in Iowa shows Richardson at 12%, less than 10% from Obama and Edwards.  It was a very good birthday for Richardson.

Finally, I'll leave you with a video of an interview on CNN from earlier this month on Richardson's new book:

along with his speech at the JJ convention in Iowa:

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

I actually agree with you. Richardson actually answered lots of questions with substance.

Many of the top candidates' answers were just talking points we've heard over and over.

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

Maybe Bill and Barack could make a deal in Iowa.

Since they are the only 2 courageous candidate who took a strong stance on the driver license issue , they should break a deal in Iowa.

If Barack is not viable in one precinct , he could send his people to Bill and if Bill is not viable in certain areas , he could encourage his folks to go with Obama.

If one of them wins the nomination , the other candidate would be picked as VP.

I don't think this would work (none / 0)

I think Richardson supporters will divide among several candidates if they are forced to go to a second choice.

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

They were aligned together on two issues, driver's licences and 'national security' vis a vis 'human rights.'  The 'public safety' issue obviously is founded in their experience at a state level, the other I attribute to a mutual understanding, and sympathy for, international affairs.  Nobel Peace Prize nomination?  His fifth?  That's gotta' be impressive.

Nobel Peace Prize Nomination Not All That Impressi (none / 0)

I mean, it's cool that Richardson has received five nominations, but anyone can be nominated, really.  Joseph Stalin was nominated, so was Mussolini.

And more recently, George Bush and Tony Blair were nominated.  Good thing to say on the campaign trail, though.

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

Wow, I wrote a post today at my blog asking if Richardson was rising before the debates.  A day after I wrote about his string of bad polling and bad stances on issues.

Maybe he's hitting his stride at the right time -- but is it too little too late?

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

Better in November than January.  Keep in mind Iowans have traditionally, and this year appear no different, waited until the last 30 days to make up their mind.  Any one of the top 3 could take a fall and if Richardson surges ahead he could end up mounting a strong challenge.  It might only take 30% of the vote to win Iowa.

Got a mail piece from Richardson this week (none / 0)

on education. It was a very strong piece. He made clear that NCLB should be scrapped, which sets him apart from some of the others. I think he should be emphasizing his domestic policy stands more when he campaigns here.

I feel that when undecideds start to move in December, either Richardson or Biden is going to move forward significantly. I don't know who it will be.

Re: Got a mail piece from Richardson this week (none / 0)

Thanks for keeping us informed of what's happening on the ground in Iowa.  Can you post the mailer on bleedingheartland?

I know Biden is making a run at Richardson but I see Biden spending so much time talking about Richardson's plan for Iraq.  Does anyone know whether and how US troops will come from Iraq under Biden.  Biden's approach to Iraq is contradictory and confusing in my opinion.  Also Yepsen was critical of Biden last night and I agree with what he said:  "Joseph Biden seemed uneven. He's excellent when he's talking about foreign policy and judicial appointments, and bad when he tries too hard to be funny or gets angry."

and just got another piece today (none / 0)

from Richardson, this one dealing with a range of issues.

I will summarize these in a diary when I have the chance.

I agree with you that it is unclear how and when Biden would bring troops out of Iraq. I also hear him say that his plan is not a partition, but it sure sounds like a partition to me.

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

I really liked Richardson last night on several points, not least of which driver's licences, and think he did himself credit.  There was one small issue I had with his list of requirements for Pakistan in which he mentioned, and I am paraphrasing, 'restoration of the constitution' and 'giving Bhutto a chance to run for election.'  I would have thought he would have known that Benazir Bhutto is prohibited from a third term by the recently suspended constitution of Pakistan.  Just a minor point but it puzzled me.

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

Richardson's comment on class warfare was classic Republican.

He's obviously running for VP

Rising only as high as (none / 0)

Hillary's VP.  This is transparent.

Look, I love the guy's resume'.  Him being on the ticket is definitely going to carry her to the White House.  I can kinda sorta be OK with that.

But to pretend Richardson's run is anything more than an endorsement of Clinton after he comes in fourth in Iowa is fantasy.

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

I was proud of Bill Richardson tonight, and proud to be a supporter.  It was amazing how the other candidates were following his lead and listening to him as he exhbited presidential leadership.

Happy Birthday, Bill!

Better with each debate (none / 0)

The first couple of debates he looked out of place and uncomfortable.  Lately he has looked more polished and poised up there.  I think his new found comfort is also allowing him to speak more clearly and not fumble as much.

Re: Bill Richardson Rising (none / 0)

Richardson has pretty much stumbled through these forums.  I agree he was a bit more relaxed last night.  But lest we think he is all about diplomacy and riding in to save Clinton from Obama and Edwards, read this:  http://katestone.wordpress.com

He's been slowly gaining in TX - just a point behind Edwards in this week's poll, though Clinton broke 50% for the first time
