Draft Udall Nears Success; Udall Reconsidering Run for Senate

It sounds like Congressman Tom Udall is paying heed to the countless activists in New Mexico and around the country seeking to draft him into the race for the United States Senate in New Mexico. Michael Coleman has the scoop for the Albuquerque Journal (and I'm hearing the same story backchannel as well).

I just got a call from someone very knowledgable about N.M. Democratic politics who says Rep. Tom Udall's people are calling the party's heavy hitters in the state this morning to inform them he is reconsidering a run for the U.S. Senate.

The source stressed that the congressman has not made an ironclad decision to run but wants people to know he's giving Sen. Pete Domenici's soon-to-be open seat a serious second look.

Shortly after Domenici announced his retirement on Oct.4, Udall said he would not seek the seat, citing his growing stature in the U.S. House and a new seat on the appropriations committee.

But a rapidly growing "Draft Udall" movement online, as well as major arm-twisting from the national Democratic elite (including Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Chuck Schumer), has convinced the congressman to reconsider.

[...]

Incidentally, I also heard yesterday from separate - but equally reliable sources - that Gov. Bill Richardson called Udall yesterday to tell him he DOES NOT plan to run for the Senate and would stay out of Udall's way if the congressman decides to jump in.

Now that Udall is reconsidering his decision to not run for the Senate, it's time to press on with the Draft Udall movement -- and press on hard. Head over to the Draft Udall Act Blue page and make a $5 contribution today to send Congressman Udall a clear signal that you want to see him run and head over to DraftUdall.com to find other ways to get involved.

More on this as it develops...

Update [2007-11-1 13:38:46 by Jonathan Singer]: Head over to the petition page right now to make your voice heard.

Update [2007-11-1 14:37:44 by Jonathan Singer]: Big time New Mexico blogger Heath Haussamen is on the story:

U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., is reconsidering running for U.S. Senate, a knowledgeable source confirmed today.

[...]

Alex Flores’ DraftUdall.com has already raised more than $1,000 through ActBlue in small contributions for a Udall Senate run, and supporters have pledged another $5,000 through the site if he enters the race.

The push in Washington and the grassroots, progressive support in New Mexico has apparently had an effect, and Flores said he is pleased with today’s news that Udall is reconsidering.

“It looks like the one person in New Mexico we were hoping would hear us got the message,” he said. “Tom Udall can count on the netroots to follow through and support him all the way to the U.S. Senate.”

Congrats to MyDDer Alex Flores for doing a lot of the legwork on this effort and running DraftUdall.com. And I'm hearing that we may be seeing and hearing more things from this effort soon...

Update [2007-11-1 17:33:6 by Jonathan Singer]: Jim Baca, former Albuquerque mayor and current New Mexico Natural Resource Trustee for Governor Bill Richardson (among other things), blogs as follows on the ramifications of this news:

Winners on Udall's entry would be: Udall himself, the American people and New Mexicans, the Democratic party, America's journey back to status as a respected member of the international community, the environment and western public lands.

Losers on Udall's entry would be: Marty Chavez, the Republican Party, neocons, and the oil and gas industry(my favorite).

Please go sign the petition and throw some cash in the bucket - the more we amass as incentive for the Congressman, the more he'll be pushed to run.

Geez. Can we get a Draft DeFazio campaign going while we're at it? (We can skip Draft Kerrey, much as I'd like that seat.)

Boy if Udall does change his mind and Begich decides to run in AK, we should consider making DSCC chair a life-time post for Schumer.

Don't forget - We still have the possibility of Thad Cochran retiring in Mississippi and then he could work on recruiting Former AG Mike Moore or Former Governor Ronnie Musgrove.

Richardson (none / 0)

Looks like Bill Richardson will have to $*^% or get off the pot. He was assuming that the NM Senate race would still be available to after his Presidential campaign finally throws in the towel.

Re: Richardson (none / 0)

It sounds like Richardson has gotten off the pot, as you put it.

Incidentally, I also heard yesterday from separate - but equally reliable sources - that Gov. Bill Richardson called Udall yesterday to tell him he DOES NOT plan to run for the Senate and would stay out of Udall's way if the congressman decides to jump in.

Re: Richardson (none / 0)

He was never on the pot, really.

The first poster made it sound like Richardson has had running for senate in the back of his mind, which isn't and hasn't been the case.

Can anyone explain why?

Re: Richardson (none / 0)

Richardson immediately said he is focused on his presidential campaign and has no interest in US Senate at all.  Right after Domenici retired.

Even if Richardson doesn't win the Democratic nomination, he still stands as a high pick for VP, Sec of State, or he can go back to being New Mexico's governor.  There were absolutely no reasons to believe he was considering senate, until he made a comment a couple of days ago.

He told big Democratic donors in New Mexico to wait a little bit in regards to the US Senate race.  We now know it is because Udall is considering a run again.

Re: Draft Udall Nears Success; (none / 0)

I'd love to know how many donations to the draft Udall fund came from New Mexicans. Any idea? I consistently see this referred to as a New Mexico progressive grassroots effort in a number of sources but the only New Mexican I know who is involved is Alex Flores who doesn't live in New Mexico.

Now the effort may or may not be a positive thing, but it certainly didn't spring from activists in New Mexico.

Re: Draft Udall Nears Success; (2.00 / 1)

This is deceptive. I live in New Mexico, I vote in New Mexico, and I pay New Mexico taxes. My bank accounts are in New Mexico and I graduated from the Albuquerque Academy before leaving for college. Discounting students who leave New Mexico temporarily for school as not living in the state means you don't believe we ought to vote there, nor support its economy, nor bring our skill sets home to give back.

Re: Draft Udall Nears Success; (none / 0)

I'm just not seeing the progressive grassroots activist movement you are describing here on the ground. Of course almost every progressive is very supportive of Rep. Udall but the many activists I know have mostly been involved with helping the Don Wiviott campaign for Senate. Since you aren't currently living in New Mexico, you wouldn't know this. That's why I've been commenting as I have when this race comes up.

I'm not saying you shouldn't be involved in politics while you're away at school but I am saying that some of things you are saying about the draft movement aren't accurate from my perch here in Albuquerque.

Re: Draft Udall Nears Success; (none / 0)

That's because officially the only declared candidates on the Democratic side are Wiviott and Chavez, so of course the progressives are working on Wiviott's campaign (as no one really believes that Martin Chavez is our best candidate).

It's a draft movement, not an actual campaign. But I will say that I take it very seriously as a local draft movement because Alex clearly has his roots in New Mexico, and wouldn't be working this hard on the Draft Udall website if he weren't.

I strongly support Alex's efforts (and would like to point that I have donated $10 to the Draft Udall effort [and in case you care, I'm also from Albuquerque, born and raised and am going to school at UNM]).

By the way, this is my first post on MyDD, but I'm a semi-regular contributor to Swing State Project under the tag of dgm.
