Matt Ortega at The Right's Field brings us the apparently official logo of the 2008 Republican convention. You gotta see this thing. The large elephant with stars for eyes gives "wide stance" a whole new meaning.
Fred Thompson had another one of his terrible horrible no good very bad days seeing as he made the mistake of opening his mouth and all. Not only did Thompson have to ask for applause at an event in Iowa but he also mistakenly claimed that the Democrats had the majority when he was shepherding John Roberts through his senate confirmation and referred to Russia as "The Soviet Union." Someone please just write him a script already, this is getting embarrassing.
Looks like Rudy Giuliani will be denied communion by the same Bishop who denied it to John Kerry for being pro-choice in 2004. Hey, at least the guy is consistent. And Rudy! is giving Grandpa Fred a run for his money in the dumb ass department. At a New Hampshire chocolate shop, Giuliani railed against Democrats for wanting to raise taxes "here in Massachusetts." He also raised the spectre of right-wing bogeyman George McGovern when criticizing Hillary Clinton but turns out Rudy! actually voted for McGovern in 1972. D'oh! But wait, did he go an entire day without saying "9/11?" Say it isn't so!
Ron Paul raised just over $5M in the third quarter. That's as much as John McCain and five times as much as Mike Huckabee. Makes you wonder about Republicans that such an empty suit as Fred Thompson is considered viable and the politically talented and seemingly genuine Mike Huckabee is relegated to bottom of the pack status. I guess he'll be vindicated somewhat when he's named the VP pick of either Giuliani or Romney should one of them get the nomination. It's the only sure thing in the entire 2008 race.
John McCain just can't stop talking religion...cuz you know, it's such a strong suit of his. This time, he doesn't know that Mormons are Christians. Also, after having released the text of his prepared remarks of a speech in South Carolina in which he was to criticize Hillary Clinton for wanting it both ways on the war, McCain decided not to deliver the attack, citing the inappropriateness of the venue, a military academy for 7th-12th graders. Instead, he came off as just as indecisive as he accused Hillary Clinton of being, not to mention shaking in his boots at the prospect of taking her on. Oh yeah, and McCain is super psyched! about Bush's SCHIP veto.

Heck, he's just emulating the republican's sainted ronnie. Confusing movie roles with reality.

It was in a script. In 1984, the USSR's best submarine captain in their newest sub violates orders and heads for the USA.

Of course, the film he was in was released in March 1990, just a little bit before the "official" dissolution of the USSR on December 26, 1991 when Fred wasn't paying attention.

Well, a lot of Christians don't believe that Mormons are Christians... of course, they don't believe that Catholics are Christians, either...

Anyways, that Elephant logo brings back memories of my Atari 2600... It's basically got that same blocky, 8-bit character feel to it... Now it just needs to "bleep" and "boink" and we can make some sort of lousy game from it!

Atari 2600 was a 4 bit system. Nintendo and Sega MAster System were the first 8 bit. It was the later Atari systems that were 8 bit and beyond.

Incorrect... It is an 8-bit machine. The heart of the Atari is the MOS 6507 processor, which is a stripped down 6502, but it still has 8 bit registers with 16 bit addressing.. the sprites were all 8-bit values as well... The TIA chip (the video "card" as it were) had two 8-bit registers for sprite values.

I should know... I've programmed games for the system! :-)

Right wingers are truly whacked out.

Huckabee is by far their best candidate, and they want nothing to do with him.

If we were stuck with another republican for 8 years, and god I hope not, Huckabee seems to be the least bad.

Still bad, just the least bad.

Hell I'm think Huckabee is the VP for nearly every candidate except Thompson... and even then, given how Clinton showed that you don't need a VP outside of your geographic area to win, we might see Huckabee. Thank GOD Republicans are stupid, as a Huckabee nomination scares me more than ANYTHING! It amazes me he hasn't caught on given how much the base hates the GOP field... he is southern, religious, anti-choice, pro-war and plays the value card.... given how much the Theocons hate Guiliani and McCain and don't trust Romney and see THompson as an idiot, you'd think Huckabee would be thrown all their support.

Well again, thank god they are morons.

I don't think most Christians pay much attention to Mormonism. I also can't think of a major Christian religion that does recognize Mormonism as a Christian faith. I think the Catholic Church opts for a simple "it's not a Christian religion" (the church, having put a lot of time and effort into explaining how the trinity does not equal polytheism, is resentful of a religion that calls itself Christian and claims if you lead a proper Mormon life, you get to be god in your own universe). Last I checked, the Southern Baptist Conference preferred the "Mormons are the armies of Satan" position or some such. Which brings us around to the fact that Mormon Church has a history of identifying the Catholic Church as the "great and abominable church." Those creepy "truth restored" ads the Mormons run are premised on the belief that all other claimed Christian religions are false.

The assorted Christian religions have a fine history of calling each other out for failing purity tests, but I can't imagine a single one of them would recognize a religion that can't even agree to the very first clause of the Nicene Creed (I believe in one God) as having any standing in the debate. I've heard that the RLDS (now "Community of Christ") has addressed this issue with a theological upgrade designed to bring them into the realm of acceptable debate, but don't know any details.

So, McCain doesn't look like a fool for his statement. He actually looks tolerant of different faiths. The quoted article is poorly worded in that the serious issue with many evangelicals is whether or not they can vote for a non-Christian, not whether or not Mormons are Christians. More specifically, whether voting for a Mormon, falsely claiming to be a Christian, legitimizes in the public eye the Mormon claim of being Christian.

David Dayen, on the other hand, does an excellent job of demonstrating the feared Mormon scam with this: "You don't exactly have to be a theology student to know that Mormons believe in Jesus Christ. I think it's that whole calling themselves "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" that tips it off." And you don't have to be Anna Wintour to know that the handbag you purchased for cash off the street is counterfeit.
