Bush Vetoes SCHIP

This morning George Bush vetoed the expansion and re-authorization of SCHIP in the most cowardly fashion.

The White House sought little attention for Bush's action, with the president casting his veto behind closed doors without any fanfare or news coverage. He defended it later Wednesday during a budget speech in Lancaster, Pa., addressing a welcoming audience organized by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry in GOP-friendly Pennsylvania Dutch country.

At that event, he cast himself as the compromiser in chief.

But he seemed eager to avert a full-scale showdown over the difficult issue, offering that he is "more than willing" to negotiate with lawmakers "if they need a little more money in the bill to help us meet the objective of getting help for poor children."

Refreshingly, the Democrats appear in no mood for compromise and have adopted a post-veto override strategy.

Democratic congressional leaders said they may put off the override attempt for as long as two weeks to maximize pressure on Republican House members whose votes will be critical.

"We remain committed to making SCHIP into law -- with or without the president's support," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., referring to the full name of the State Children's Health Insurance Program. [...]

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said Democrats were imploring 15 House Republicans to switch positions but had received no agreements so far.

To aid in that effort, a coalition made up of MoveOn.org Political Action, Americans United for Change, AFSCME, USAction, SEIU, and True Majority will be holding more than 200 "Rallies For Our Children's Health" around the country to urge Congress to override the veto. You can find a rally near you HERE.

To find out if your congressman voted against healthcare for children, the roll call vote is HERE. Call them (switchboard: 202-225-3121) and demand that they vote to override the veto. I wrote about 8 of the Republicans the Democratic leadership is targeting HERE but there are plenty more where that came from -- 151 Republicans voted against it after all. I expect every Democratic challenger of these Bush lapdogs to hit on this issue at every opportunity.

I called my congressman, Rep. John McHugh, and his office said that he has not yet decided whether or not to vote for the override. (He voted for the reauthorization and expansion.)

I think the White House is realizing this has backfired a bit which is why they didn't make a huge deal about the veto.

I agree -- Bush will end up giving a little in order to declare himself the winner -- the moderate (ha ha) president who is trying to save us from God Forbid socialized medicine.    But its getting so obvious that whatever is needed by the people in this country takes a backseat to his wars and hos own vanity.

Re: Bush Vetoes SCHIP (none / 0)

Democrats should hold steady on this one.  The revised SCHIP bill was already a compromise from the original design, which called for a $50 Billion increase.  If we can't get a measly $35 Billion put into this extremely valuable program, then we don't value our most vulnerable citizens.   Make this a signature issue, Democrats.   Bush's shameful veto should come back to haunt him and his godforsaken party for many years to come.

Re: Bush Vetoes SCHIP (none / 0)

George--I believe the Dems will make this a defining issue for our Party.  The Republicans have shown time and time again that they care more about spending money on Foreign Policy fiascos then taking care of Americans. Hillary is popular with moderates who are caught in this economic nightmare along with the rest of us and who see a Republican Party which doesn't mind giving the President another 200 Bill for Iraq but can't see giving 35 Bill for American kids. Its a winner issue and a no brainer for us.  But what makes me sad is that we cannot forget party ideology and get together as a nation to do whats right for our people.

Re: Bush Vetoes SCHIP (none / 0)

My 13 month old is now not eligible for this subsidized health care program. We are a family of 3 we make roughly $48,000. Rent, Student loans, car payment, mandatory car ins, groceries, gas, utiliteis, phone bill... I live in New York. What I'm getting at is the fact that now I have to cancel my insurance so as my daughter can be covered. This is the only way we can afford health care. So if Mr. Bush wanted to be sure the lower middle class couldn't take advantage of this program he has succeded. The problem is, when the middle class is no longer on any better financial ground than the poor... you don't really have a middle class. Mr. Bush would say we don't have any poor.

Re: Bush Vetoes SCHIP (none / 0)

No other industrialized nation in the world has to make the kind of choices you write about.  Its a damn shame when one illness can bankrupt you and you have to decide whether to insure your child or yourself.  Better times are coming because its crunch time in this country.  Bush has left this nation on auto-pilot while he conducts his terror war and his neglect has created great chasms between the rich and the rest of us. He never mentions that the American people subsidize his healthcare and that of his administration and Congress.

Re: Bush Vetoes SCHIP (none / 0)

We are seeing a meltdown in the Republican Party who say they are confident they will have enough votes to sustain Bush's veto.  What a thing to be proud of!  Bush calls this the first step toward Socialized Medicine but doesn't seem to mind that he takes Government Healthcare for himself and his administration.  Its time to decide if the American people deserve the same healthcare that our Congress and our President get.

Re: Bush Vetoes SCHIP (none / 0)

I'm writing from Italy. As many of you surely know, in Italy any citizen gets free cure at any age, it costs more on taxes, 43%of my entries goes on taxes, but for example we got the best cancer cure for my father for 3 years and it costed nothing to my family.
As an Italian i'm worried about your situation because usually whatever happens in the US cross the Ocean and happens in Italy in 15/20 years and it happens easier if it s a wrong thing.
So the Democrats must do whatever is in their possibilities to stop this shame, it's your money they're spending.
