Colbert Pulls in Double-Digits -- But Not Necessarily from Dems

Rasmussen Reports has done some polling on three-way matchups including Stephen Colbert as a third party candidate. Lo and behold, at least according to the survey, Colbert pulls in strong numbers -- and doesn't seem to cost the Democrats much support (at least relative to the GOP). Take a look:

Giuliani (R)35Thompson (R)34
Clinton (D)45Clinton (D)46
Colbert (I)13Colbert (I)12

Over at Open Left Chris Bowers picks out an interesting tidbit from the poll: Republicans actually run third behind Clinton and Colbert among younger voters, a truly remarkable development. From Rasmussen's poll write up:

Colbert does particularly well with the younger voters most likely to be watching his show and therefore most aware of his myriad presidential-like qualities. In the match-up with Giuliani and Clinton, Colbert draws 28% of likely voters aged 18-29. He draws 31% of that cohort when his foes are Thompson and Clinton. In both match-ups, Colbert has more support with young voters than the GOP candidate.

In truth, I'm sure that these results are at least as indicative of the public's discomfort with the GOP at this point and their general openness to a third party candidacy as it is a reflection on Colbert in particular. Nevertheless, that Colbert's (at least seemingly) sarcastic presidential bid draws so much support and drags named Republican candidates down into the mid-30s -- and into third place among younger voters -- speaks to a real weakness of the GOP today.

lol. This is why it's comical to equal facebooks sign-ups to real support.

I still remember Obama's heyday...

if people are jumping ship from 10000000 Obama to - 10000000 Colbert so quickly... just shows soft support and why the campaign shouldnt rely on college voters.

IT's not zero sum. You can be in both. What this (along with other evidence) indicates is that Democrats are still not maximizing their potential support among highly receptive young voters.

Re: Colbert Pulls in Double-Digits -- But Not Nece (none / 0)

You kinda have to understand Facebook.  Every day, people are starting these groups with the intention of getting a million members - whether it be a million people who like Obama, a million people who like pie, or whatever.  And they invite their friends who jump on board the bandwagon and invite their own friends in chain-letter fashion.

I'm always seeing one or two of my friends joining these random groups like "1,000,000 New York Yankees Haters" or the ever-popular "Let's set a world record!" types.  (Someday, you can tell your grandkids that you were part of the largest Facebook group ever.)  And often a week later, after all the hype has died down and the group has gotten all the members it's going to get, I see my friends leaving it.

Truly, I have only a rudimentary understanding of the Facebook community, but I know that group membership equals very, very soft support.  It's really hard to tell how many of those people actually care about something and how many of them joined because they join every group one of their friends invites them into.

Re: Colbert Pulls in Double-Digits -- But Not Nece (none / 0)

yea i know the facebook revolution is not an adequate indicator of the real world, but its still interesting to look at.

But on the other hand, popular support (whether or not that equals actual support) for Colbert is stunning. Most of the people joining watch John Stewart and the Colbert Report, and get most of their news from those two shows, even though they are mainly parodies and satiric in nature.

It mainly serves as an indication of how soft the youth vote is.  I am not doubting that there are millions of youth who are actually involved in politics (I'm 22) but a majority of Americans probably dont follow politics, and dont feel that voting actually affects them, whether its voting at the national level, state, or local.

The fact that over 730K people jumped on the Colbert group is stunning even for facebook standards, considering there are "1 million" groups for the major candidates etc.

I think the measure is more of popularity (how many people watch Colbert) than a serious indicator of where people stand.  I wouldnt doubt that since its "Just a primary" and not an "actual election" as many people see it, that Colbert could actually siphon off votes from Obama.

interesting that Grandpa Fred (none / 0)

does no better than Rudy in this poll.

You'd think that any familiarity with Rudy's record on social issues would send him lower.

But then again, Fred is just as much a phony as Rudy.

Is it just me or is the 2008 election starting to turn into the movie "Man of the Year".  I mean williams character is BASICALLY a Stewart or Colbert clone...  Watch, He'll win due to a bug in the Diebold system (the same "bug" that got Bush re-elected in 2004).
