Dem Committees Have Twice the Cash-on-Hand of GOP C'tees

Yesterday the two parties' campaign committees released their monthly finance reports to the Federal Election Commission, and as has been the case for the entire year the Democrats continue to destroy the Republicans in campaign cash. Take a look:

As you can see, the Democratic committees hold better than a 2-to-1 advantage in cash-on-hand, both overall and when debts and obligations are taken into account ($46,494,438.3 to $22,594,563.55). The numbers out of the House are particularly remarkable, with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee holding a 17-to-1 advantage in cash-on-hand over the National Republican Congressional Committee and the NRCC still unable to climb out of the red and into the black. Also noteworthy is the fact that compared with this point in 2005 the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is ahead of where it was in fundraising ($42 million v. $31.5 million) and cash-on-hand ($22.9 million v. 19 million) while the National Republican Senatorial Committee is running behind where it was in both categories ($23.4 million v. $28.2 million in fundraising; $8.3 million v. $9 million in cash-on-hand). And though the Democratic National Committee still trails the Republican National Committee, both in terms of fundraising and cash-on-hand, the fact that the RNC's advantage is not larger given that the GOP still controls the White House is quite telling.

I just don't understand what's going on ath the DNC - shouldn't they be far far ahead of the RNC by now? What is going wrong over there?

Dean's focus has always been the 50 state program, he never had much interest in fund raising. He inherited a strong base of donors from 2004, enough donors to raise about $4 million a month, and he has only barely maintained that base. He has invested neither time nor money in prospecting for more donors. He structured the DNC and the 50 state program to spend about $4 million a month, so he has never been able to put much money away.

The establishment power players in the party don't like Dean and steer money away from the DNC and into the DCCC and DSCC, which they control. There's also a very viabrant presidential primary race going on and so a lot of money that would otherwise go to the DNC is instead going direct to the candidates. As Hillary plans to build and run her complete own operation should she win the nomination her people have had no interest in building up the DNC so have steered the money elsewhere instead.

Dean also doesn't take money to do favors for special interests on bills and when he does a fundraiser in a state he doesn't gobble up the money for the DNC as past chairmen did he instead uses it to fund the state and local parties to build them up. Those numbers aren't taken into account at all in the DNC fundraising. Despite all this Dean has still improved the DNC's fundraising up so that the gap between it and the RNC is smaller than it had been in the past when it was run by others.

Watching the DNC struggle is simply pitiful. Everyone else is kicking ass except for the losers at out national party HQ. I can't wait until Howard Dean is gone.

Oh really? We'd be better off with Harold Ford schmoozing with the big donors, blowing his mouth off at every opportunity to undermine progressives, and letting state parties wither and die?

We don't need the DNC to bankroll campaigns this year, and what it's doing, it's doing well.

Dean's 50 State strategy is great for the grassroots, but doesn't help the big players. This is why the DNC is trailing behind the RNC.

In a few years with Democrats start taking power in traditionally red states, this will pay off huge. Image being able to take a red state and enshrine in its constitution anti-gerrymandering laws. Do you realize how that would change the political landscape on a national level?

Also, if you think about it, making the Republicans have to sweat in their home base at least a little means that Republicans in blue states don't get as much money downticket. It keeps them honest, in other words. Plus, we should not forget that state legislatures set local policy on everything from welfare to road building. We need local progressive government too, and people who will run for Congress when the time comes.

You guys could complain about anything couldn't you?

(Regarding the comment posts above me complaining about the DNC)

Look at the DSCC and the DCCC.  They are kicking ass.  Our presidential candidate will carry him or herself without necessitating a large fundraising showing from the DNC.  So Democratic donors are pushing the DCCC and DSCC forward to make gains in the congress.  We're doing THE BEST we have ever done, while the Republicans are doing the worst they have ever done in fundraising, and you guys aren't appreciating any of it.
