Religious Group Goes After Pro-Life Republicans On SCHIP

In advance of next Thursday's vote to override Bush's SCHIP veto, the DCCC has launched a second round of radio ads targeting Republicans who originally voted No but who might be vulnerable to pressure from their constituents to switch to override the veto -- Nancy Pelosi has said we need just 13 more votes to succeed. As the final confrontation approaches, the DCCC is getting some unlikely assistance in this endeavor from a non-partisan non-profit religious group Catholics United, which is similarly targeting Republican opponents of SCHIP with radio ads in their districts but their strategy is a bit different:  they're going after pro-life Republicans with ads on Christian and talk radio stations arguing that their opposition to SCHIP is inconsistent with their "pro-life" values.

"Building a true culture of life requires public policies that promote the welfare of the most vulnerable," said Chris Korzen, executive director of Catholics United. "At the heart of the Christian faith is a deep and abiding concern for the need of others. Pro-life Christians who serve in Congress should honor this commitment by supporting health care for poor children."

Brilliant.

The script of the radio ads (you can listen to them HERE) is as follows:

"I'm the mother of three children, and I'm pro-life. I believe that protecting the lives our children must be our nation's number one moral priority. That's why I'm concerned that Congressman X says he's pro-life but votes against health care for poor children. That's not pro-life. That's not pro-family. Tell Congressman X to vote for health care for children. Call him today at XXXX, that's XXXXX."

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Charities USA, and the Catholic Health Association have all urged Congress and President Bush to support SCHIP.

The House members being targeted by Catholics United include:

Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (FL-05)
Rep. Joseph Knollenberg (MI-09)
Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (MI-11)
Rep. Tim Walberg (MI-07)
Rep. Steve Chabot (OH-01)
Rep. Gene Taylor (MS-04)
Rep. Michele Bachmann (MN-06)
Rep. Sam Graves (MO-06)
Rep. Thelma Drake (VA-02)
Rep. John Peterson (PA-05)

Sam Graves, also a target of the DCCC, is already expressing defiance in the face of pressure.

"The [DCCC] can spend their money," [Republican Sam] Graves said. "That stuff doesn't work on me."

But one wonders if his tune will change if the pressure comes from his pro-life Republican constituents. The ads will run between Monday and Wednesday of next week in advance of the override vote scheduled for Thursday.

Missouri targeting (none / 0)

Maybe this organization should have targetted Hulshof (who is Catholic and whose district contains a lot of pretty Catholic areas). Even if Hulshof doesn't really recieve serious re-election challenges.

It would be just as effective as targetting Graves (who is not going to listen because no one gets inbetween him and his buddy GWB)

Repubs you should be your brother's keeper (none / 0)

Thank you Catholics -- this one is worth going to the mat for.

Re: Jim Marshall (none / 0)

What pressure is being exerted on Jim Marshall(GA-08), one of four Democrats to vote against SCHIP earlier?  There are rumors of a primary challenger for him in the wings, and if he does not recant on the override vote, he'll deserve one.

I've given him a pass on a lot of votes, given the Republican lean of his district, and the narrowness of his three wins ('02, '04 and '06 were all within 2 points).  However, the polling on SCHIP is too favorable for him to plead political necessity.

Re: Jim Marshall (none / 0)

But the catch with Marshall is that the main primary challenger is the super-divisive mayor of Macon, Jack Ellis.

Something tells me that Ellis would have about a 0% chance of defeating a Republican if he were to somehow beat Marshall. But I think that the demographics of who votes in Georgia Democratic primaries is still favorable enough for Marshall for him to defeat Ellis.

Put one more line with an ominous voice in the background. GOP is pro life as long as the life is a fetus. Once the fetus becomes a baby it is anti-life.

Re: Jim Marshall (none / 0)

Decades ago, a Virginia Democrat named henry Howell said that a southern liberal believes in lifa after birth.  Howell, of course, implicitly pointed out the weakness of Marshall, et. al. who will protect the fetus (life before birth) and firmly believe in an after life but do all in their power to make life as difficult as possible during life for many of their poorer brethren.

Jim Marshall comes off as a poor excuse for a Christian and a poor excuse for a man.

Re: Jim Marshall (none / 0)

You could very well be right; I'm in the 11th, not the 8th, and not familiar with Ellis.  As I've pointed out before, Marshall is at least a vote for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker, whereas any alternative is a vote for Speaker Boehner (major yuck factor).

Still, this vote seems an awful lot to put up with, especially when the politics are favorable to supporting the override.

Re: Religious Group Goes After Pro-Life Republican (none / 0)

Wow.  People who are actually pro-life and not just against sex.  I may disagree, but I honestly have respect for that.
