50 State Blog Network

Please help out with this project. I'll have another announcement about this project soon--Chris

Local community blogs are important. Blogs like Raising Kaine in Virginia helped make the difference for Senator Webb and others this past election. I can speak to that personally, as a part of MichiganLiberal. But what about all the states that don't have a state-based community blog yet? How can a community blog reach a larger audience when they have a big story? Can we help each other to grow?

I'm proud to announce a new project through BlogPac - the 50 State Blog Network. The goal of this project is to produce a strong network of state-based blogs across the country, to help grow their local blogospheres and turn red to blue on a statewide basis.

It starts with a list. See below the cut for the list of state-based lefty community blogs I've compiled. If I'm wrong, or missing somebody, please speak up! You know your local blogs better than I do. We're not picking favorites, just looking for true community-based efforts. Also if you have contact information for any of these blogs, please email me.

What if your state doesn't have a community blog? If you're interested in helping to start one, or you know of a blog that's interested in moving over to a community platform like Scoop or Soapblox, please comment here or email me. I would love to help you get going. More updates later, including how OpenID through netroots.com can lead to a single signon across multiple blogs. Maybe we can arrange a in-person meeting or conference of state-based bloggers this year too, at the DNC Winter Meeting and/or YearlyKos.

Texas also has Texas Kaos. (Points to sig.)

There's actually a lively Texas blogosphere with some of the local blogs doing really exceptional work focusing on local issues and investigations.

You can find a log of them linked up at Burnt Orange or Texas Kaos on the blogroll.

BOR is evolving once more as one student generation (Karl-T) departs and another (Phillip Martin) assumes the day-to-day responsibility, and has lately become the go-to for insider dope on all things Lege as well as other Texas Democratic scuttlebutt.

Then there's also The Texas Blue, which just launched Jan. 1, but has already gotten articles from some big local names, like ex-Gov. candidate Chris Bell.  I think they're quite the up-and-comers, with quality reporting and analysis -- but then again, I'm the managing editor, so maybe I'm a little biased. :-)

Hope Illinois gets another one.  The one you list is a bunch of whiners.

DFA has been good in the past for local blogs.  But they are trying to merge all of them in the State.

But still, I say a very good idea.

People do want to get involved.  I have had people calling me about where they can find a protest against the surge.

We protest every weekend.  It did help the last election.  But damn I wish we had a national protest.

Care to substantiate your opinon there bud? I don't see anyone stopping your from posting your take on Illinois politics at SbC. The people posting at SbC are by and large all involved in the local Democratic poltical scene and involved on the ground in a variety of races.

Right now you'll find posts on the Greater Chicago Caucus - an organizing of several special interest and ethnic groups under one larger more effective group. You'll also read about the Chicago Aldermanic races.

If you want to throw insults, why not come to SbC instead and enlighten us with how we should blog correctly. In your opinion, of course.

First of all, I'd like to apologize for my rather blunt comment.  I didn't mean it harshly.  It's just the "Southern" portion of the state often feels neglected politically.

As far as suggestions go, I like the old nickname of Illinois, The Sucker State, but that may be far too cynical.  Do you mind if I drop you an e-mail later?  I've got a lot of ideas.

By the way, I'm from Quincy, Illinois, just for a point of reference.

Re: Nebraska (none / 0)

At the New Nebraska Network, we're happy to take submissions from readers via e-mail and to run them as diaries.  Would gladly move to more of a community-based format but only if it doesn't cost me anything.  Been running the site for two years - trying to build some sort of progressive online presence in Nebraska.  While a nice overhaul of the site would be fantastic, I'm not willing to invest money I don't have so that other people can make advertising revenues from our efforts.

Call me selfish.

DC Blogs (none / 0)

There was a great blog called letsfreedc ("blogging until DC residents are equal") but alas, the bloggers ran out of steam when most Democrats left us high and dry in our bid to hold a first (non-binding) primary to draw attention to our status.  SO I guess they blogged until DC residents were equal or DC residents were demoralized by the 2004 election results.

I recommend the archives.  Perhaps an email to Mark Richards or Cal or Sam would inspire them to revive the website.

Or perhaps our bloggy new shadow Rep Mike Panetta (who blogs here) can hold down the DC lefty blog fort until we a real firebrand can step up.

OpenID / Netroots.com (none / 0)

Of course, if we can get the state blogs on board w/ OpenID, readers will be able to use any OpenID provider, not just Netroots.com. That's why it's so cool. It's a distributed system that puts the power of identity in the hands of the user - they choose who to trust. With Netroots.com we're hoping to build an OpenID provider that also includes some helpful tools for online activists. I promise to write more about it soon.

Re: 50 State Blog Network (none / 0)

One thing that also needs to be considered is sub-state blogs. California, for example, is large enough that in addition to blogs dealing with the whole state, it would make sense to have ones concerned with the north or south of the state, even with certain of the metropolitan or regional areas.

The main thing is to avoid the top-down model of setting one blog as 'the' state blog. There's a place for several for each state, looking at everything from statewide races down to congressional districts right down to very local races. I think making sure they're all linking to each other and functioning as a cohesive whole which further connects to national blogs is the key, not just making sure each state has a blog which claims to represent it in the blogosphere.

I like a lot of the work that comes out of BSB, especially when "Staff" was still there.  But there always seemed to be a kind of antagonistic feeling there which you don't seem to find at AsOhioGoes.

I don't know if it's a snobbery, or they've just had to deal with so many trolls over the years that they became a bit caustic.  Either way, without "Staff" contributing there anymore, it won't be the same.

I am sorry but it seems to me that you are the one who showed up here to trash me.  The thread STARTS with YOU stating "AsOhioGoes is great if you love Hickmania". I don't care if BSB is here or not but you don't need to insult AOG to get ahead. It was unneccesary.

When I initially saw you were not included and then realized it was because they thought you did not have diaries - I was going to post a comment in BSBs defense, correcting the misunderstanding - Then I read down a little more and saw that instead of stating the facts, you decided to throw a barb at me - not cool.

Please get back to your "important work" and leave me alone. I have been nothing but nice to you.

Thanks for the link to us over at Keystonepolitics.
We are all Democrats and most of us are very active in the state party. We do try and play it straight, though, and to keep the disagreements civil.

I signed up at LeftyBlogs about a week ago (?) but my blog still hasn't shown up. Any idea what a reasonable expectations is for the initial setup?

Raising Kaine is ready to work with any and all state-based Progressive blogs.

This year was an incredible triumph for all of us.  Momentum is on our sides, but you only need to look at the other side of the aisle to see how fast that can go away.

New coordination, organization, and initiatives like this are crucial, as long as they are built on solid progressive principles.

Working together, there's nothing we can't accomplish.

Let us know what we can do to help.

Re: 50 State Blog Network (3.00 / 2)

I'd just like to say that for those places that don't have a "community blog" yet -- a very important distinction from the "lone angry voice" blog -- there really is no reason NOT to go with Soapblox as your platform. It is dirt cheap ($15/mo) and super-functional. You will have nearly as much functionality as DKos or MyDD -- you won't miss the rest -- and you gain the power to create a community, which is powerful.

Our traffic went way up after we went to Soapblox. Some of that was timing, but a lot of it was just giving people a chance to use our blog as their blog. We now have over 2,500 registered users at Blue Mass. Group, which gives the site a lot of credibility, and our diarists a lot of eyeballs looking at their stuff. I wouldn't call it an "organizing tool", but it's a way to create community in a way that the typical toilet-paper roll Blogger site just can't do.

If you're thinking about it in places like Kansas or Louisiana or wherever, go ahead and open your doors to your community.

Nebraska (3.00 / 1)

I love kyle, @ the New Nebraska Network, and work with him on a daily basis in Nebraska Young Democrats...

but I'd like to put in a plug for the UNO Democrats blog.  It has a larger community and readership, and a more mydd-like perspective.

Also, three writers for the UNO Dems blog will be at the DNC Meeting in Feb, but no one from the NNN will be there.

So, at least in the future if not for this project, please consider the UNO Dems Blog.

Re: Nebraska (none / 0)

Also, we're moving to a user-diary feature set up at some point in the near future.

Re: Nebraska (none / 0)

ok, one more point,
the uno dems blog sent someone to YearlyKos vs 1.0 in Vegas too.  In fact, I was in the MyDD caucus room live-blogging right along w/ all the rest of you.

(I was sitting right next to Moureen Dowd in fact)

Re: Nebraska (3.00 / 1)

Oh John...is that the way you want to play?  Should we mention that the blog goes inactive for weeks - if not months - at a time?  And in terms of statewide reach/appeal/esteem, do you really want to be pulling out the ol' measuring stick?

"MyDD-like perspective"?  What the hell does that even mean?

But, by all means, plug away.  I hope you guys will keep up the good work of the last two weeks.  And, by all means, enjoy your DNC meeting.

Suppose I should be gratfied that we've come far enough that we can even have a turf war.  Ahhh....progress!

Re: Nebraska (3.00 / 1)

haha...
alls fair in love and blogs Kyle!

Hope you don't mind... I promised Dave I'd increase the promotion of UNO Dems blog nationally.  This seemed like a good place to start.

...I did at least say "in the future" **wistfully looks the other direction**

... is this what an "active local blog community" looks like?  I always wondered.  Perhaps we'll swing the '08 Senate election?

Re: 50 State Blog Network (none / 0)

For Oregon, I'd respectfully submit the one I co-founded, Loaded Orygun, the Oregon journal of politics and culture. It's a two-person outfit (you may know my co-founder, Carla, from Preemptive Karma), and while we're currently on Blogger and have no diaries, we're in the process of moving to our own domain and switching to MT. (Speaking of, if anyone can help me resolve perl issues that are putting mt.cgi into an endless loop and getting our account suspended, email me at loadedorygun-at-gmail, thanks!)

I love BlueOregon, and I know Kari is a frequent contributor of items here at MyDD. It has more reach than LO, many more contributors including current local and state politicians, and is generally considered the dean of OR blogs. However it's primarily a discussion arena for progressives, rather than a unified platform for  advocacy and investigative reporting. I modestly submit that LoadedO is more of the latter, and is in fact the most-read blog by BlueOregon readers, so it's uniquely suited as a complement to BlueO in the 50-state context, I believe.

I don't want to wade into another state's blogbattle, but if you're talking lefty blogs in Washington, you simply can't leave out Horses' Ass. If nothing else, Goldy is also on the radio now, which gives him double-threat power. He's a difference-maker.

by torridjoe on Wed Jan 10, 2007 at 03:46:42 PM EST

Re: 50 State Blog Network (none / 0)

Torridjoe's right -- Horses Ass is an important one to include for Washington.  I don't see the "Blog Wars' out here in WA...  (though maybe some blogger battles; Washblog's had a little excitement recently).  Goldy is a community-builder -- suceeding through excellence rather than competition.

Washblog, the blog you have listed now, and on which I'm an editor, is indeed a true community blog  -- with 14 front-page writers, a soon-to-be-announced new editorial board of 6 members, and a diary section open to the community.   We regularly promote diaries posted by community members to the front page.  And we're actively reaching out to progressive community groups to contribute content and to advise us on their issues and on networking across issues.

We have an advocacy mission -- to work with other blogs and community organizations to help network the progressive movement in the state.  Washblog's writers and board members are community activists, grassroots, feet-on-the-ground people -- as are many of our readers and contributors.

Re: 50 State Blog Network (none / 0)

I've been hosting a Wisconsin progressive blog for some time - http://www.uppitywis.org.  I've emailed Laura about it - I just wanted to invite anybody in Wisconsin who would like to contribute to do so - we have blogs available to anyone who registers, a link directory to Wisconsin progressive/liberal/left-wing resources, and quite a lot more -- but we could sure use more contributors.

It's interesting - I'm up here in the Northwestern part of the state, but most of the contributions and readers come from Madison and Milwaukee.
