Howard Dean, Patrick Murphy Send Their Love

Today is a good day.  We have a new Speaker, the first woman in that position, and a whole raft of Democratic elected officials coming into power.  When you're in the minority, you have to rely on Senators to stand strong against an aggressive majority.  House members can make statements, but in terms of governing ability they are irrelevant.  The netroots, because we've largely been observing Congressional fights up close in a minority context, have become accustomed to a conciliatory set of leader-Senators on our side.

With the new majority, that's going to change radically.  Congressmen in the House are much freer to be openly progressive, because they are responsive to smaller areas that are often urban and/or liberal.  They don't have to appeal to a whole state, and they don't have to compromise with the other side to move legislation.  They may choose to compromise, but it's not strictly necessary.

Along with this openly progressive nature, House leaders in the majority have a lot of power.  Committee Chairmen have a lot more power than individual Senators because of their ability to gate-keep over legislation, and the non-conciliatory nature of the House versus the Senate.  These are very different institutions.

Anyway, we're going to have to get used to a House caucus full of powerful liberal leaders who can do stuff.  This means not obsessing on every word, as well as understanding legislation and governance.  'Message' isn't the only battlefield anymore, so our strategies and conversations are going to have to change and become smarter and more three dimensional.  In addition, and I've been a blogger for four years, the culture has changed - there is a lot of respect for the netroots within the Democratic caucus, and that means we can actually do some work together.

It's going to be great to have allies, real allies with power, real allies that share our values.  Imagine good faith dialogue where disagreement doesn't mean that your allies are evil.  Yes, the ponies are here.

Anyway, here's some more crappy video.

Passing a Net Neutrality bill... (3.00 / 1)

...would be a great way for the new Congress to show it's in tune with bloggers.

Why didn't Dennis Hastert hand the gavel over to Speaker Pelosi?

The 110th House website is still under construction. I'm getting anxious to e-mail Speaker Pelosi, so I hope the busy bees manage to have things operational soon.

Had not noticed the link to "Kids in the House" on my visits to the 109th Congress site, so don't know if this is new or old. Anyway, it's a place for kids, teachers and parents to get the vocabulary of governance and to learn about the legislative process. It harmonizes very nicely with today's inclusion of the children.

Re: Howard Dean, Patrick Murphy Send Their Love (none / 0)

Because he was sulking in the back of the room?

He gave up the leadership position, but I didn't think that took place until the House was sworn in.  Typical GOP, sore losers. David Drier has been bitching and whining on CSPAN for awhile now, while Hastings and Frank are gleefully shutting him off - funny stuff.

My Rep is the Speaker (none / 0)

And you DC types don't even get a Rep.

Send Their Love (none / 0)

I'm still getting used to the idea that the political dynamic in this country has been turned around 180 degrees.  I've been walking around under the dark GOP cloud for so long that it requires a conscious effort to realize that things really are different now.  Anybody else notice this syndrome?

Thank You, Howard Dean! (3.00 / 1)

Never forget...."Howard Power" started all of this. Thank you, Dr. Dean! From that lady who loved speaking for you in Falls Church so long ago. Keep up the good work. We will, too.

Okay, I gotta know:  what did the "in your face" button Howard was talking about actually say?  The video quality was allllllmost, but not quite, good enough to read it.

Re: Howard Dean, Patrick Murphy Send Their Love (3.00 / 1)

While it is true we have to think more about flexing our power and getting stuff done, if we accomplish stuff and no one hears about it, or only hears the negative spin on it from Limbaugh, Hannity, and Coulter, we will have a short lived majority. We should redouble our efforts to improve our message and make sure our champions stay on it.

I am much less sanguine about how much the Dems will accomplish, simply because they do not have a track record of doing so.  So in that sense, I agree we need to think more about strategy and policy so we can hold the Dem leadership's feet to the fire.  But even if they do accomplish great things, having a great product means nothing unless you sell it.

So bottom line is more work for us.  But I would rather have this problem than the one we have before Nov. 7th.
