On Jane Hamsher

Go here if you haven't heard the news.  Jane Hamsher is a dear friend and one of the most important people in the progressive movement today.  She's a mentor and a role model, she's fiercely loyal to her friends and allies, and she's willing to work strategically and pragmatically to fight injustice at great personal cost.  She is a genuine American hero, and let's hope everything turns out for the best.

Always remember that the blogs and the new progressive movement are built by people, not by a mass megaphone, and people like Jane create the space for us to flourish and make change.

Update (Jonathan): Christy Hardin Smith is passing on a humble request from Jane to help keep FDL going.

And a FDL fundraising plea (none / 0)

FDL is in need of donations, as well.  They're doing amazing work with Libby trial right now, giving us a blow-by-blow account.  If you can afford it, read this post at FDL and dig deep:

Re: On Jane Hamsher (none / 0)

That's a shame about the third time breast cancer occurrence. I love her blog. I wish I had some time to come to CT during the Lamont campaign because she was one of the people I would have liked to have met.

Her blog not only provides more of a female presence in the liberal blogosphere, but does so with energy, humor, and the will to hit back with creative insults when needed and serves as a great counterbalance to right wing talk radio.

Re: On Jane Hamsher (none / 0)

Two things:

One, my heart goes out to Jane at this difficult and painful time, and like everyone else I wish her the very best and hope that this turns out well for her.

And two, you might want to re-word the following given the nature of this situation:

"Christy Hardin Smith has passed on..."

I think you know what I mean. Before my brain had a chance to parse this, I had a quite different, no doubt unintended interpretation.

Sad, hoping for the best, and my best thoughts are with Jane and her family.

Re: On Jane Hamsher (none / 0)

I'm not a frequent poster at FDL, but I lurk there a lot.  Jane's and Christy's posts are generally the sort that say it all perfectly and leave me nothing to add, and I'm not the sort to say some lefty equivalent to "megadittos to all that," so I rarely post.

Jane has turned FDL into a big part of the backbone of the lefty blogosphere, and all I can say is that (a) she's in my thoughts and prayers, and I hope they're able to get out all the cancerous stuff; and (b) I've Paypalled FDL some money, and am ready to send more.

Sad news. Let's hope her treatment is a success.

Thank You (3.00 / 1)

I'm exhausted, and I have another post to write tonight to sum up Day Two of Libby voir dire, but even these few comments find me very moved.  Jane is everything described in the main post and more.  She's become a dear and close friend through our work together, and an inspiration.  Thanks to all of you for your support and thoughts for her.

Re: Thank You (none / 0)

With the recent sudden passing of Maria Leavy, it is all the more important that we tell people how much the mean to us while they are here on Earth.

Re: On Jane Hamsher (none / 0)

Jane has done a spectacular job- it's pretty astonishing how much she's been able to do in such little time. She's not a megaphone, no, but she's always made it extremely, extremely clear she would never stop listening to people just because she has attained a certain level of access.
