82 GOP votes for House minimum wage bill

The bill (HR 2) passed at 1710 ET by the score of 315 to 116: Dems voted all 233, the GOP were split more or less down the middle.

I assume it was a clean bill (THOMAS is way behind).

Which raises the question, Why, if so many GOP reps are willing to vote for a clean bill, does the Dem Senate leadership think it needs to rush to a compromise bill with tax sweeteners (Jonathan's piece)?

Are the House GOP more centrist than their Senate counterparts all of a sudden? (That wasn't the impression when they were under the DeLay lash!)

The Washington Post lists the votes. The results are fascinating and not quiote what you might think. All 5 Alabama Republicans voted to increase the minimum wage as did 10 of 16 Florida Republicans. OTOH, 17 of 19 California Republicans voted against the increase with only Mary Bono voting for it.

In general, those voting against were the leadership, their suck up followers and the ideological fringe. One interesting vote against: newbie (and former DeLay aide) Peter Roskam. Thank you, Peter. This one was a gift. Hastert and Manzullo also voted no with all six other Illinois Rs voting yes.

It is always murky, and I never had a big hope for a progressive Seante with the narrow majority and many of our Senators. However, it is pretty darn sweet to see all of those Republicans in the hous edefecet to our side on a piece of legislation.
