MA-Gov Dem Primary Thread: Patrick Moves to Big Lead

Unofficial results of the Massachusetts Democratic gubernatorial primary from the Associated Press:

  • Last Update: Boston Globe - "Deval Patrick Wins Easily"
  • ***BREAKING***: The AP calls it for Patrick.
  • 40.86 percent reporting: Patrick 47.16 - Gabrieli 29.23 - Reilly 23.60.
  • Quick update: Channel 38 indeed calls the race for Patrick
  • 19.62 percent reporting: Patrick 47.86 - Gabrieli 29.44 - Reilly 22.70. A reader in the comments reports that a local news station has called the race for Patrick. Another reader is covering the returns with city-by-city breakdown at his own blog. We're getting close, but there are still a lot of votes to be counted..
  • 15.79 percent reporting: Patrick 48.28 - Gabrieli 29.42 - Reilly 22.30
  • 10.99 percent reporting: Patrick 47.88 - Gabrieli 29.93 - Reilly 22.19. Looks like things are generally holding at this point. Unless the first 11 percent of precincts are significantly different than the rest (which is a possibility), Patrick should be able to hold on for a fairly decent victory.
  • 7.53 percent reporting: Patrick 50.12 - Gabrieli 28.86 - Reilly 21.03
  • 3.42 percent reporting: Patrick 50.31 - Gabrieli 29.53 - Reilly 20.15
  • 1.89 percent reporting: Patrick 51.79 - Gabrieli 29.14 - Reilly 19.07
I'll continue to update the results as they come in -- at least until the point at which we can safely predict the winner (which might come even earlier in the evening that we previously expected).

Patrick is truly a people powered candidate, against ultimate insider Reilly and self-financed Gabreili.  This solid win will give Patrick great momentum going into the general election.  Recent polls gave him a remarkable 70-9 favorability-unfavorability, especially remarkable for a front-runner whose been taking constant fire from opponents.

What a great campaign, Duval.  Congrats.

some channels are already calling it for patrick

I would be amazing if he finishes above 50% (none / 0)

But a win is a win.

My dad was a delegate for Deval at the Democratic convention, so he's extremely excited.

Re: MA-Gov Dem Primary Thread: Patrick Moves to Bi (none / 0)

Just out of curiousity, has Massachusetts ever had an African-American Governor? I know it had a Black Republican Senator back in the 50's and 60's, but I don't know if it has ever had a black governor.

by JewishJake on Tue Sep 19, 2006 at 09:08:40 PM EST

Well... (none / 0)

...considering there have only been three black elected senators from any state ever, that alone is very significant.

no (none / 0)

We haven't.

In fact, if Deval wins I'm pretty sure he'd either be the 2nd or 3rd African American governor ever. I read that somewhere today.

Re: no (none / 0)

That's it. Besides Wilder, only Tom Bradley came close.

Re: MA-Gov Dem Primary Thread: Patrick Moves to Bi (none / 0)

To correct the historical record....   Ed Brooke was a liberal Rubublican, and black, and served as Massachusetts Senator, elected in 1966 and defeated after two terms, in 1978, by Paul Tsongas.

He was a good guy, a true liberal Republican who stood up to Nixon, and who fought for causes that are now considered "progressive."

Re: MA-Gov Dem Primary Thread: Patrick Moves to Bi (none / 0)

Doug Wilder remains the only post-Reconstruction black governor, though hopefully that will change.

I am surprised the Sons-of-Ed-King Democrats -- and don't think for a minute they still aren't out there -- couldn't convince one of the two white guys to bail.

Local news channel are making call! (none / 0)

Local Channel 38 News has called it for Patrick!!!

Some analysis (none / 0)

I'm covering the race town-by-town on my blog, which is dedicated to Massachusetts state politics.

Things are looking GREAT for Patrick and I'm wicked excited, but it will get closer because none of the biggest cities have turned in results - including Springfield, the 3rd largest city in the state and where Reilly is from. Boston hasn't turned in any results either, same with other big cities like New Bedford, Lynn and Fall River.

However, Deval is doing very well in Massachusetts's second largest city - Worcester (pronounced woohstah) - so fah.

Gabrieli to concede in about 20 minutes... (none / 0)

The Patrick convention is going wild! They are already celebrating and channel 38 is speculating that Gabrieli will concede in about 20 minutes...

by manyoso on Tue Sep 19, 2006 at 09:35:32 PM EST

Tom Reilly's concession (none / 0)

It was exactly what this party needed. He was gracious, kind and thanked Massachusetts - "I have nothing to complain about." He even joked, "We lost. I'm just hoping to crack 25%."

As bad as he was as a campaign - and despite the fact that he's held positions I don't like and done things as AG that I disagreed with - it was kind and gracious for him to give that concession speech.

Re: Tom Reilly's concession (3.00 / 1)

Tom's a good guy. It's not surprising that he showed class in his concession speech. It's true though, that he carried out a terrible, awful campaign. Whoever consulted for him should never, never work again. He couldn't shed the "insider" tag, which he never deserved--he was not particularly in with the Finneran-Bulger-Birmingham et al machine, he blundered badly with the lt. governor stuff. Just brutal.

Re: Tom Reilly's concession (3.00 / 1)

Tom's a good guy?  As far as I'm concerned, he isn't.  Not for the way he has been handling the gay marriage issue in the state, but for the way that he persecuted the Amiraults in the Fells Acre Day School case in the 1980s and continuing into the 1990s.

I would never, ever, vote for Reilly.

We did it. (none / 0)

I was a ward coordinator in Cambridge... we got our city to deliver 72% of its votes for Patrick.  I hear every county in Mass went for Patrick.  I was at the victory party, where Gabrieli showed up to demonstrate support for Patrick.

But more important than photo ops of unified Dems was the mood of the crowd.

Deval's supporters are fired up.  We know how to persuade voters in large numbers.  We know how to win, and we want to win.

And there is no ad campaign the Republicans can come up with to stop us.

Re: MA-Gov Dem Primary Thread: Patrick wins (none / 0)

I know of nothing but good about Deval Patrick. It's always uplifting when the people win a round.

Patrick Moves to Big Lead (3.00 / 1)

Conservative Howie Carr describes the coming GOP/Healey campaign as needing to focus on "illegal aliens, higher taxes and anti-white racial quotas," of of which he attributes to Patrick:

http://news.bostonherald.com/columnists/ view.bg?articleid=158343&format=& ;page=1

The racial overtones of the coming campaign are going to be very, very ugly.  Healey likes to pretend her undergraduate degree in criminology makes her an expert in the field (as opposed to her day job as the wife of a millionaire).  Deval is going to get attacked for his civil rights record.  Working for the NAACP will equal defending murders.

Watch out for lots and lots and LOTS of black/white fear mongering...
