Voters Need To Feel Confident

Nine weeks from today Americans will be asked to go to the polls and choose who will represent them in Congress. This election provides an important opportunity for voters to decide whether or not they want to change the direction that this country is headed in - and it is shaping up to be an exciting contest with a lot of close races.

Unfortunately, over the past two election cycles we have witnessed too many instances of irregularities at the voting booth with the advent of paperless electronic voting. And as we know too well, in a tight race, just a handful of irregularities can add up to major trouble when it comes time to decide the winner. That is why I am an advocate for and proud co-sponsor of Rep. Rush Holt's H.R. 550, The Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act.

H.R. 550, if passed, would require all voting machines to produce an actual paper record that voters can inspect to check the accuracy of their votes and that election officials can use to verify votes in the event of a computer malfunction, hacking, or other irregularity. Experts often refer to this paper record as a "voter-verified paper ballot."

In November 2004, as many as 50 million voters cast their ballots on electronic voting machines that lacked a voter-verified paper trail. Voters need to feel confident that their vote is counted, and counted accurately. Election officials need to feel confident that they have a way of accurately recounting votes when questions arise.

I strongly urge everyone to first, click here to find out if your representative is a co-sponsor of H.R. 550. If they have signed on, let them know that you appreciate their support. If they have not, it is important that you tell them where you stand on this issue that is so vital to the functioning of our democracy.

Congressman Xavier Becerra...

You can count 1 of the 50 states who weren't on the list that were notified by a constituent, urging them to support your bill. Thanks for the heads up.

Thank you Rabbit - in my experience, when you hear a message loud and clear from your constituents it makes it harder and harder to ignore the issue. Please pass the message along, and hopefully we can get this bill on the docket before the next election. I also wanted to mention, to learn more about the bill, visit Rep. Holt's H.R. 550 page here.

You're very welcome and I will.

You will need to establish a system of randoom checks by impartial workers at random precincts to ensure accuracy.  The machines will still be doing exactly what they are doing now and only random checks will reveal that.

As a voter in the infamous Broward County, I thank you for your efforts. I didn't even need to click to know that my representattive, Kendrick Meed was on the list. We desparately need this bill.

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm (none / 0)

Why would a congressman who is securing the rights of millions of disenfranchised Americans get so little recognition here at MyDD?

I am disappointed with the lack of support from the leaders and members of this forum when it comes to voting reform.  If  I'm the senior member here who thinks this diary deserves a recommendation, then I would imagine that no one is very concerned about voting irregularities.

I hope, if you vote electronically without a paper trail and random audits, you wake up and realize that if an election isn't verifiable, it isn't democracy. I hope that if your vote is verifiable and fair, that you support those of us whose vote is counted in cyberspace.

Peace out.
