A Sponsorship Request

Today, MyDD had 65,000 visitors, which is a bit more than double what we usually get.  I'm on the ground in Connecticut and I've been here for five days, and I assume that the traffic is going to be reasonably high until Wednesday.  This is my fourth trip up here.  The first was in February, to meet Lamont (here was my endorsement).  The second was for the state convention, and the third was for the debate.  I know this race, but covering and being a part of it has cost me in total around $3000 in car rental fees, gas, train rides, and other various expenses.

MyDD seems to allow for a mix of journalism, advocacy, and community that leads to real strategic changes in how progressives operate.  We do polling, we cover races, we make endorsements, and we get involved in pushing for candidates.  I love this site, and I love the community interactions here.  I learn so much when I put up posts, it's really a forum for incredible distributed progressive change-making.  I think this is the kind of progressive infrastructure that should be supported and encouraged.

So here's the deal.

If anyone out there is willing to sponsor me for the rest of this primary for $3000, I'll mention you as a sponsor on every post I write about Lamont-Lieberman until Wednesday.  The mention will be clearly marked by a sentence in italics prior to every post, as in 'The Lamont-Lieberman MyDD primary coverage is sponsored by xyzd'.  If you have a book you want out in the blogs, or if you have an organization and you're trying to get it out there on the blogs, this is a good way to get it out there. Or if you have a new blog or web site, this is a perfect marketing opportunity. Email me at stoller at gmail.com if you're interested.

If you don't want a mention and would just like to donate to encourage this kind of coverage, you can paypal me here.  I'm not asking you to sacrifice for this, or for anyone who's hard up to put up any cash.  If you have some spare disposable income and you've enjoyed the coverage recently, you might consider throwing in a hundred bucks or so.  But please don't give if you have credit card debt or anything like that.

I love doing this blog, and I would rather do nothing else but make progressive change by telling stories.  I consider myself incredibly blessed that I am able to do this.  The fact is though that MyDD doesn't pay very much, and as a result I can't afford things like real video cameras and editing software that would improve coverage dramatically.

And pretty soon as my savings dry up, I'll have to go back and do consulting or find some other revenue model, and I'll be unable to write as much for MyDD.

So anyway, I think this is pretty good as sponsorship deals go.  You'll get a lot of exposure until next Wednesday, and a lot of kudos because, well, Lamont is now kind of hip.  And you'll be supporting real and functional progressive infrastructure that works, all for a cool three thousand dollars. I can be reached at stoller at gmail.com.

Re: A Sponsorship Request (none / 0)

Also in.  I would be more comfortable if there wasnt a sponsorship tag with every post.  Hopefully, we can subsidize MyDD expenses with member donations.

Re: A Sponsorship Request (none / 0)

What if the tag line were different and funny each time?

Re: A Sponsorship Request (none / 0)

Not a big deal either way.  My only thought is that with the increased scrutiny that MyDD will be subjected to over the next few days, it may look a little odd to have the posts of our chief on the ground in CT guy, formally sponsored.

That said, I am happy to help defer expenses, and hope that we can support MyDD ground work without having to have posts sponsored.

Threw in $50.01 (none / 0)

Yeah, the extra cent probably wasn't necessary. My job prohibits political donations, but this isn't one...technically.

Keep on keepin' on, Matt.

Re: A Sponsorship Request (3.00 / 1)

Matt,
Don't be surprised to get NO LOVE whatsoever from campaign volunteers from New Jersey.  Since you went out of your way to characterize us as "losers" you're not getting a dime from Cherry Hill.

Honestly, I was so disgusted when I read thigs like this:
http://www.bluejersey.com/showDiary.do;jsessionid=79EF4417155C546A3584DCB9A8E902BF?diaryId=2146
it makes me glad you're in Connecticut and not here in the Garden State.

You did a lousy job blogging for the Corzine campaign and you turned around and trashed everyone involved on your blog.  then you wage what felt like a very personal attact of campaign volunteers in NJ.  Then you turn around and ask for $3000 for the privledge of doing....what? raising your own profile?

Here's a tip: what goes around comes around.  That goes doubly for goodwill.

Fair enough.  I understand that my post made you angry, but I also know that you are changing the culture of New Jersey politics through your work.

Re: A Sponsorship Request (none / 0)

One other point - being a volunteer in a New Jersey race is really really hard.  It's hard because the local machine people don't respect you, and it's hard because you get very little validation in a system built on patronage.

My critique was directed not at the volunteers but at the arrogance of the political culture that sees so little value in the people who try to take an active role in their state.

Re. Leiberbullies (none / 0)

Am glad to support. PS re the confrontations at the cafe, etc...
besides the lobbyists has anyone checked to see if the hecklers are college republicans or payed canvasers. They sound remarkably similar to the in-your-face college republicans I saw everywhere in the Ohio 04 Kerry events...bullies, and making the point not democracy, but them; unwilling to accept difference of opinion

Re: Re. Leiberbullies (none / 0)

I think the leaders are paid Democratic operatives from out of state, and the kids are local high school kids who are doing a summer job.  The abrasiveness is coming from a small number (5-10) Lieberman staffers; the rest just serve as a rented crowd.

Re: A Sponsorship Request (none / 0)

Jay, that was a little cold. Although $3000 does seem like a high price tag for a few trips to Connecticut, Stoller's assertion that cash and cynicism play a role in NJ field politics isn't horribly unfair. I knew a lot of high school kids that were paid $15 an hour to canvas for Corzine. I don't think it was a personal attack on spirited volunteers, as I'm sure there were plenty.

Re: A Sponsorship Request (none / 0)

No, Stoller's assertion was that all of the field staffers and managers in NJ are "thugs" who have no respect for volunteers.  While there may be some field people who are less than stellar to volunteers, they don't make it too long in the State.

Is money a part of field ops in NJ?  Of course it is, but it's one aspect of how it's done.  It's an unfortunate fact that there are not enough volunteers to staff a field program at the level that has led to Democratic dominance in NJ (literally up to 500 manhours a week for a campaign on the level of a legislative district - statewide that translates into 5000-10000 manhours a week for  12+ weeks). Ergo you have to hire people at $12/hour to provide the bulk of that work.

Quite frankly it's difficult to get volunteers to knock on doors, not that I blame any of them.  It's tiring and the people at doors can be downright rude.  Anyone willing to do it once is a hero - come back week after week and you become one of the "supervolunteers" that staffers remember year after year.

Just sent you an Internet with $50, Matt.  (Does a PayPal transaction count as 'an Internet' in Sen. Stevens-speak?  If not, it should!)

Make a list of NEEDS (none / 0)

Matt, I am going to send in a small donation soon. But more importantly, we probably need a resource needs tracker. I got old TVs, I am sure some people have old video cameras that are still not outdated. Some people could volunteer to provide transportation and housing to out of state volunteers and save on costs. After this election, I would be glad to volunteer efforts in building a nationwide network of volunteers to house or supply local campaigns with equipment. We could track needs on the net.

I am based in Atlanta. I wish I was there in CT. Hell work was so busy, I had to blow off Lollapalooza in Chicago. So I really appreciate the work done by all of you in CT.
