Well well well. Guess who showed up to the Greenwich Lamont events bearing weird signs and a dickhead attitude towards everyone, including those in the press? Yes, our favorite lobbyist Richard Goodstein, the nice crazy man who confronted Ned Lamont in a diner with pleasing shouts and helpfully civil angry questions.

In Greenwich, hundreds of people gathered to hear Lamont speak, and that went off well. Lamont keeps getting better and better, and the energy he generates exerts a kind of quirky and charming political gravity on those around him. Before him, Lowell Weicker and Jim Dean talked, along with local candidates Ed Krumeich and Frank Farricker. Krumeich spoke and reminded everyone that he hadn't seen Joe in Greenwich for anything but a fundraiser for eighteen years. There were snow cones, and the weather wasn't quite as oppressively hot as it has been for the past week. The press corps is getting bigger; George Stephanapoulos showed up, and there was a film crew from Boston doing some filming.

In terms of the Lieberkidz and their confrontational attitude, there was some minor scuffling at the event and some obnoxious signs, but it was good Richard who was the main attraction on that front. He couldn't help but put himself in front of the cameras with his sign that, and I'm paraphrasing here, called Bill Clinton a real Democrat and Al Sharpton a divisive Democrat. You can see it in the video. It's somewhat shitty quality because I'm taking video with my digital camera and it's mostly meant for still photography, but the end of the clip gives you a sense of who Goodstein is. He's talking to a journalist, and totally flips out.

Man, he just goes off the rails at the end. Completely unhinged.

I hope the CT papers write up how a lobbyist is doing this shit for Joe. Take him down another notch...

I'll give you another guy who generally follows his own heart and ideals on matters. His name is George Will and he is a died in the wool Conservative. He's often wrong but he generally makes honest arguments and occasionally even considers the other point of view. I respect that.

But I sure wouldn't vote for George Will for Senator.

If you believe that Democratic opposition to Lieberman is because liberals can't stand people who follow their heart I've got another formulation that you should accept right away.

The Arabs hate us for our "freedom".

It's easier to dodge responsibility by pretending that it isn't our own actions that have caused others to dislike us. No, can't be that. It must be that people dislike us for our good qualities.

People are voting against Lieberman because "he follows his own heart"? Nah. We've got a laundry list of actions he has taken as Senator that we disapprove of and another list of scornful, Republican-enabling sound-bites he's dribbled out to Fox News.

Lieberman is opposed because he has been a poor representative of the Democratic Party. Believing anything else is believing in a mirage.

You've been around politics long enough to know that you don't give your opponent free publicity. Why are you posting all these people with Lieberman shirts and signs at a lamont rally.

From your gallery, it looks like they dominated the crowdtj.

Some enterprising reporter needs to ask Goodstein who's paying for him to be there, and which of his clients have legislation before any committee on which Lieberman serves.

"A new poll commissioned by the New London Day gives Ned Lamont (D) a 10-point lead over Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) in next week's Democratic U.S. Senate primary. Lamont currently receives the support of 53% of voters, compared to 43% for Lieberman.

Key factor: "Thirty-seven percent of Democratic voters surveyed said the single most important issue determining their vote in the primary was the war in Iraq." Only "twenty-one percent said they were most concerned with the `overall record of the candidate.'

This explains why Lieberman is calling for Rumsfeld to resign. He's trying to make nice with the antiwar voter. A bit late, methinks...

So is Lowell Weicker as huge as they say he is? Supposed to be about 6'7" or something.

I might vote D but I was sure disappointed when Weicker lost his seat in '88.

Hi all. New user here. Found a couple of links for Goodstein and thought I'd share. Nothing super secret, all found with Google.

He was at a healthcare lobbyist convention in DC last month. A short resume is at the National Home Infusion Association. He attended Weslyan and got his law degree Magna Cum Laude from Georgetown.

His client list can be found by going to the Senate public lobbyist disclosure website. Click registrant name and press the button. Type in goodstein and press the button again. There is only one hit, Richard F, and clicking on his name will bring up all his clients.

I don't know if any of this is actually useful but at least now we know exactly who he is. There are strict regulations, maybe not strict enough, on lobbyists. It would be funny if he could be coaxed into breaking the law at Ned's Beach Party tonight. He makes big bucks in the lobbying industry. Would be a shame if he did anything that might get him disqualified from his gravy train.

Lobbyists work for big corporations. They don't work for people. Vote for Ned and get him to help put these fat cats into a pen where they belong.

One addition on Goodstein, concerning his media appearances as a "Democratic strategist," which I've seen mentioned in postings on a couple of blogs. He's appearing tomorrow (Sunday) morning on a local, D.C.-area program on Channel 7 (ABC)
called "Capital Sunday." I called this station this morning (Saturday), and they said the program for tomorrow has already been taped.

I think it's worth contacting the program and asking why they're featuring an analyst who acts like Goodstein has in Connecticut. If they want to have him back on the program, he ought to come back and explain his conduct of this week.

Matt,

A small suggestion for rally videos on both sides: a fairly slow 360-degree pan to give people a feel for attendance. All the reports (admittedly all I read are from the Lamont side) talk about Lamont crowds vs Lieberman crickets; sure be nice to see that on video.
