MyDD Creepy Adwatch

This is Lieberman's new ad.

Um.  What do you think?  No need to answer if your brain is bleeding.

Update: Ok, even though this isn't a contest, we have a winner, the commenter known as I voted for kodos.

Why would a venerable statesman (an 18 year Senator) voluntarily evoke the ultimate image of the end of a long career? I'm kind of stunned. I would have been impressed with the Lamont campaign for putting together an ad associating GOP Joe with a setting sun, but Joe beat him to the punch.

Hilarious. I love the sexpot narrator. I kept expecting her to say, "And for a good time, call Connecticut for Lieberman at 860-564..."

Nice snark, but Connecticut is on the East coast.

If that's a setting sun, this was filmed way out of state.

It's a sunset (2.00 / 1)

Don't know where it was filmed, but since the sun starts dipping below the horizon as the ad progresses, it's a sunset, not a sunrise.

The end of career imagery is a strange choice, but in general, ads that are designed to make voters feel good, without any policy substance do work.  Remember Reagan's morning in America ad?

It's the bookmark piece.  Reagan had morning in America, Joe provides the sunset.  It looks like an ad for Cialluis.  Maybe Joe is trying to hook into that crowd.

Re: MyDD Creepy Adwatch (none / 0)

Very weird commercial.  A full six seconds before anything happens.  Lieberman must be made of money.
I find it interesting that he keeps talking about his years and years in the Senate.  Does he not realize that people are really pissed off at Washington right now?  Does he think anti-incumbency doesn't apply to him because he's such a nice guy?

Re: MyDD Creepy Adwatch (3.00 / 2)

The first honest thing to come out of the Lieberman campaign since Dangerstein took over communications. A sunset is the perfect way to illustrate what happened to Liebermn when he LOST the election. Bonus points for the feeling of solitude, like Joe Lieberman is all by himself when it comes to his Connecticut for Lieberman. Double bonus points for waves invoking the idea that Lieberman is washed up.

Hmmmm, all 2 of them? Geez, its a shame you are so easily bored.

"BTW. I was born in Bridgeport and my family lives in Milford and the valley."

But where do you live?

"And it has been proved that this getty images of santa barbra."

First, it is spelled "Santa Barbara".

Second, I have not seen proof of this, only conjecture.

Third, if it was proven, why did you write,"Sunsets on the southward facing long island sound, with the lovely moutains of long island in the (sic) backround"????

Seems like you have some work to do. Keep your door prize-unless you have something truly intelligent to say.

Re: A lovely sunset in Connecticut. (none / 0)

I'm not sure those are mountains in the background -- they could be clouds.  It looks like a sunrise, run backward, to me.

What's really weird is the way the video begins with second surf video superimposed over the first -- as it segues in, it looks as if there's thick, oily smoke (perhaps from a burning oil tanker) off to the left.

Re: Lamont's Response (3.00 / 0)

It would be hilarious if Lamont's team put together an ad mocking this ad:

"It's been so long since Joe Lieberman was in Connecticut, that he's forgotten that the sun sets in west. Here in the east, we wish Joe all the best in the sunset years of his retirement."

Of course, that's too snarky and negative. Maybe he should get some sunset and sunrise footage scroll a list of all the progressive and forward thinking ideas he'll bring to Washington and contrast that with a list of all Lieberman's failures running over the sunset footage.

by kaleidescope on Tue Aug 29, 2006 at 06:26:36 PM EST

WTF (none / 0)

That is a truly curious ad.  I wonder what Lieberman thinks it is accomplishing.  I don't know what "negative attacks" Lamont has been running, but when someone runs a negative ad, shouldn't you hit them back with something?

Something like this:

Candidate X's Ad:  Candidate Y is stupid.

Candidate Y's Ad:  Candidate X says I'm stupid, but he's had 4 DWI's in the past year.  It's hard to tell who's stupid when you're drunk.

Instead of responding to the negative ads, Joe puts out an add saying, "Lamont's running negative ad!!!!11one"  That has to be the most ineffectual response to a negative ad campaign.

Weak minded and ineffectual.  Exactly why we need Lieberman out of office.

My opinion on this ad was "eh."  If Lamont was going crazy with negative campaigning right now, then it would make sense -- it would be the kind of condescending ad an incumbent should run against an overly aggressive challenger.  I'm not getting the sense that Lamont is doing that right now.  The ad is basically a non-starter/waste of money.

Re: MyDD Creepy Adwatch (3.00 / 4)

Some smart person said it's probably stock footage from Getty Images, and indeed it is.

I went to gettyimages.com, searched the film section for "sunset and ocean" and on page 2 of the results came up with item #843-2 from Image Bank Film. It's not the exact same clip, but it's from the same shoot. You can match up the mountains and the reflection of the sun on the waves exactly. So where was it shot? Here's the info provided for the clip (click on the "i" symbol under the thumbnail):

"Wide shot sun setting over ocean / birds walking along water's edge / Santa Barbara"

It's definately a sunset, and it's definitely California.

This spot is emblematic of the Lieberman campaign at this point; suck up to the republicans without pissing off the democrats, which severely restricts any message. You're left with, "hasn't Joe been a great guy for the last 18 years?" "Isn't Lamont a dick for stirring up the pot?"

I think the whole point of this spot is to position Lieberman as somebody who still has political capital. The most valuable thing Joe retains his ability to make a political endorsement, backing out gracefully and throwing his support to another candidate.
