...between Reid and Lieberman that says Reid will not strip Joe's assignments as long as he pledges to vote for Reid as majority leader should he win.

It's the only plausible explanation to me as to why the Dem leadership has largely sat on its hands through this whole thing.

I pray Lamont's team is all over this outrageous act of betrayal! In a way it could the act that will sink him in the minds of Dems and Independents. There's no hiding or denial Lie-berman is a REPUGLICAN.

Is there any record of how much money the DSCC has (not) spent to help Lamont thus far?

Call Harry Reid's office at 202-224-3542 and ask them what they think of Joe Lieberman's campaigning for Republican Congressional candidates Rell and Simmons in Groton, Connecticut today, and if Reid intends to do anything about it.

Oh, and let Nancy Pelosi know what's going on, too:  202-225-4965.  I'm sure she'll be thrilled to death to find out that Holy Joe's campaigning for GOP Congresscritter candidates.

So The Honorable Senator Lieberman (con-lie) showed up at a campaign stop in Groton.

A lot of employees of federal contractors are very interested in what pols have to say.  When there's a public event for campaigns we expect just about everyone to show up.  

And now we're supposed to be upset that Joe is actually getting out to see the people.  

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that Simons and Rell will also be at the event.  That doesn't prove that Lieberman (con-lie) is campaigning for them.

Even a bad senator wouldn't campaign for Simmons in the one seat we still have a pretty good chance at (CT-2) in spite of the Lieberman campaign's work to turn out Republicans in the other two races.  He couldn't expect to hold on to any of his Dem support if he were really working with Simmons.

Rell is one thing, but Courtney v Simmons in CT-02 has been one of the Party's ten top pick-up targets since before the cycle began. When the DCCC revved up the website for the 2006 cycle, it had 2 slates on it - 10 vulnerable incumbents, and 10 target red-held seats. CT-02 was on the latter.

Maybe Rahm Emmanuel will go after the lingering party props for the turncoat. He has some clout in that wing of the party.

We just cannot have this. We had strong hopes for CT-02 and CT-04, from the beginning of the cycle, and were watching CT-05 with our fingers crossed. And now, just as new polls numbers show CT-05 narrowing, the incumbent Selficrat Senator stabs us in the back in CT-02!

because we thought all Democrats, present, former, and future understood
that it was a top-tier, front-and-center, absolutely key contest for the 2006 cycle.

The apparent basis for FireDogLake's claim is Lieberman's attendance at a "save the base" meeting re BRAC-threatened Groton sub base.

Of course Lieberman will attend, and other relevant elected officials (Gov, US Rep) will attend likewise.

If Lamont were in office, he'd be there.

And when he's asked, that's what he'll have to say ... emphatically.

lieberman campaigned for bush in florida in november 2004, saying "bush is better for israel."

I think this is all wrong. probably. it is not a campaign stop. the uproar may be misguided.

I am not comfortable at all with the way this appearance was originally presented.

Here's the scoop::

A message was posted last night at the blog of Democratic challenger Ned Lamont, who bested Lieberman in the  August 8 Democratic primary, indicating that Lieberman would campaign today with Republican Governor Jodi Rell and Republican Congressman Rob Simmons, both of whom are up for re-election.  Jane Hamsher at the blog Fire Dog Lake added that the campaign event would occur at a submarine base in the city of Groton.

Coverage by the Associated Press refers to the event as a "strategy session" to keep the base off the list of military facilities facing closure.

No mention of DEMOCRATIC SENATOR Chris Dodd or any of the Democrats in Connecticut's Congresssional delegation, so they must not have been invited when Lieberman, Rell and Simmons planned this shindig.  

By the way, if the Groton base is allegedly in dire danger of being closed -- the supposed reason for this photo-op of Joe's -- then how come the Navy just started building a $600 million housing complex there last year?

In Groton, it will build 122 new three- and four-bedroom townhouses on the former Nautilus III North, replacing 124 three-bedroom units; 119 homes for senior enlisted people and officers in Dolphin Gardens; and 44 three- and four-bedroom townhouses on the former Cherry Circle mobile home park. All the projects are slated to be finished by next spring.

In addition, 427 units in Nautilus Park, Conning Towers and Polaris Park will be renovated, with new kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms, as well as new lighting, flooring, paint and carpets.

Neither Chris Dodd nor Connecticut AG Richard Blumenthal were at the Groton GOP photo-op.

And Blumenthal's been a longtime backer of the Groton sub base.  If this were really about saving the sub base from imminent doom, and not a GOP/Lieberman campaign photo-op, wouldn't Dodd and Blumenthal -- at the VERY least -- be there, too?
