Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 Races filled

Wow--a fantastic outcome indeed, and Barry Welsh does indeed deserve some love for this. Not only did Democrats break the record, Republicans laid an egg by putting up the second worst total for either party since 1994. The overall Democratic margin, 35 districts, is twice the size of the previous record. That record was set in 1994, when Republicans challenged 18 more districts than Democrats. You can see past totals here.

For all the great bloggers Benawu lists, the real credit goes to Democrats on the ground around the country, especially those in red districts. Howard Dean, Rahm Emmanuel and the blogosphere all played roles, but when it comes to actually finding candidates to run in very difficult districts, the lion's share of the credit should go to Democrats in local areas with the guts and the energy to actually go through with it. Personally, I just like to think that I was one of many who helped plant an idea in the minds of activists. This will make an impact in November, and beyond. I also changed the formatting of this entry--Chris

** A 50 State Page update brought to you by Barry Welsh (now git over there and give him some lovin and some cash (but not for the lovin)).**

Yep 425 congressional House races will have Democratic candidates in 2006. And yep it's a record! The GOP managed 419 in 1994 and our best was 403 in 2000. This is a fantastic achievement and WAY ahead of the GOP for this cycle too.

Chris Bowers blogged this call to arms on November 5th 2004 decrying the fact that we only contested 400 districts in 2004. Aspiring candidate for Congress Barry Welsh and his team (in particular this means you Rex Freedom) responded to the call and set up the 50 State Page.

House guru's Superribbie , RBH , Nathaniel Ament Stone , David NYC , David Kowalski and Lucas O'Connor all responded to the cause and I started emailing candidate updates to the Welsh campaign and then started writing house filing diaries myself when the 50 State Page wasn't being updated often enough. A second Chris Bowers diary  in February helped convince me to pick up editing the 50 State Page in April after some campaign shuffling in the Welsh camp. I must admit it has been a buzz being able to contribute from the other side of the world (I'm Australian).

So some 51.84375 states later (5 districts in Texas still to go, all have Dem candidates) we have a record number of Dems filed in what promises to be a stellar year for us at all levels. This is a massive confirmation of Howard Dean's 50 State Strategy and means that there is only a handful of uncontested repubs who can throw money at heavily contested races.

Since my last update we now have a candidate in  LA 5. So 435 Races to be filled - 425 Races filled . The 10 Uncontested Races are as follows:

  • AL-6: We had no sign of a potential candidate and this race has been uncontested since redistricting in mid 2002.
  • AZ-6: Our candidate Glenn Fuller was kicked off the ballot for signature snafus. This district was uncontested in 2004.
  • CA-42: Mark Hull-Richter ran a very late but spirited write in campaign that fell well short. Try again in 08 please Mark!
  • FL-12: Our candidate James Davis filed all of his paperwork on time and forked over all of the correct filing fees but apparently faxed one signed document instead of presenting a signed original so he got bounced off the ballot. This district was uncontested in 2002. Have another go next time please James!

  • LA 6: We had no sign of a potential candidate.

  • MS-3: We had no sign of a potential candidate and this race was uncontested in 2004.
  • TX-11: We had no sign of a potential candidate.
  • VA-4: Murmurs abounded but no one stepped up. This district was uncontested in 2004.
  • VA-6: Viriginia Dems gave up on this district about a month before filing closed. This district has been uncontested since redistricting in mid 2002.
  • WI-6: Our candidate filed the first half of his filing paperwork but then had a change of heart that he didn't tell anyone about!  This district was uncontested in 2002.
It's interesting to note that 7 of these 10 have been uncontested in either or both of the last two elections. So for this 2006 Election cycle there are 425 Democrats and only 390 GOP candidates including the write ins in TX 21 and assuming they find candidates in the two Texas districts where they don't currently have candidates. 425 V 390 - A fantastic outcome.

w00t! (3.00 / 1)

390 is all the GOP did??????
Amazing!!!

I was hoping they'd only get like 380 but I guess they finally found some folks to run in the northeast.

Still, wow 35 seat gap, that is great.
When was the last time the gap was this wide?

Re: w00t! (3.00 / 1)

I don't think the gap has been this wide in years.

Republicans  419     396     404     399     406

Outstanding Work, Benawu (3.00 / 1)

for keep at it through out the cycle and helping Dems set the record. I think all the folks you mentioned contributed heavily towards making it possible.

I am no "guru", Benawu. Just tried to pitch in whenever I could. I especially enjoyed the TX filings day post, as things continuously got better starting with a couple of days out.

Keep up the great work you do. You're inspiring, as I told you the other day.

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (3.00 / 1)

The next logical step in my opinion of this effort is to establish some mechanism for retaining and/or improving these candidates.  And now we have 2 years to target these ten districts.  There must be a Democrat in all of them worth their salt.  If not, plenty of time for one of us to move :)

too bad about the seats in VA (3.00 / 1)

If Jim Webb falls just a little short, we may regret not having candidates on the ballot in those VA districts. Even if they are no-hopers, it's still worth it to give Democrats in those parts of the state someone to vote for.

WOW!!!  I'm one of those who believes we ought to have a candidate in every Congressional district, every election. But I never dreamed we'd get this close, this soon.

Congrats to all who made it happen!!

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (none / 0)

A correction, VA-4th was contested in 2004 by Jonathan R. Menefee who got 36% of the vote on only $30,000.00 Not sure what happened this time around, Does anybody know enough about politics in VA to comment on why these two districts were left without a candidate, I believe it speaks a lot about the state party

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (none / 0)

The VA dems gave up early in the 6th all potential candidates knocked them back in the 4th and yes it does say a lot abou the state party.

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (none / 0)

Before one gets too happy. There's a senate candidate missing in, of all places, Indiana. Evan Bayh created such a weak machine in Indiana that it [and Bayh picked the State Chair, so you could accurately say that "he"] couldn't find someone to oppose Lugar. Evan was never into party building, just party capturing and neutering.

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (none / 0)

AS the first time out of the gate, I think it's pretty darn impressive.  And it isn't as though (to varying degrees), the netroots didn't dig up a couple of good looking potential Senators (Lamont, Tester, Webb, etc.).  You're quite right that Indiana should've had a challenger, particularly with all the competitive House races in the state.  However, I don't think it denigrates the other accomplishments of all the people who worked hard on this to not have a challenger for one of the most secure Senators in the nation.

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (3.00 / 1)

It flows down to the state level. In Colorado, the Dems have candidates for 88 of 90 seats (both House and Senate) versus 74 of 90 for the Republicans. In 2004, when the Dems took both houses back after 40 years the numbers were 81/90 for the Republicans versus 82/90 for the Dems.

by tjlord on Sun Aug 13, 2006 at 11:54:54 PM EST

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (none / 0)

It unfortunately does not flow down to all states.  In North Carolina, 86 of the 170 seats (House and Senate) -that's 51% - are uncontested by one party or the other.  45 Democrats are unopposed (yeah!) and 41 Republicans (BOO!) are unopposed.  Yep - We are handing almost a quarter of the seats to the GOP without putting up a fight.

Enough is enough!

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (none / 0)

The Colorado experience is that it HAS to come at the local level. I can tell you that In Colorado Springs (aka Fort Dobson - home of James Dobson and Focus on the Family) there are three seats that went uncontested and that have good progressive candidates this November. However, there has been ZERO dollars from the state party and minimal from the local (though the local chair has been giving his own money to the candidates). In addition, I am working on Anna Lord's campaign and she has gotten six endorsements - only one with a donation. The progressives will support progressive causes anyway but an endorsement - asking the candidate to publicly champion your cause - without support of money OR volunteers is a little disheartening. SO you have to get people at the loical level to do it - the state and federal groups won't.

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (3.00 / 1)

I guess that means we have 35 democrats who should be giving most of their war-chests to contesting dems who need the money more.

Not that I have the time for such an endeavour, but if any of them seem reluctant to part with a respectable amount of their war-chests for fellow dems I hope pressure will be laid upon them.

What would be an acceptable amount of one's finances?  25%?  Do they just give it to the DCCC or would they normally just pick their own preferred races to support?

by scientician on Mon Aug 14, 2006 at 12:13:58 AM EST

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (none / 0)

DCCC would be standard operating procedure.

Re: Final Candidate filing update - we got to 425 (none / 0)

I've been building pages in parallel with dKosopedia here:

http://left.wikia.com/wiki/United_States _elections%2C_2008

The lists I'm putting together can be sorted, and I'm going to be copying a lot of this over to dK as time permits.  For each race I'm putting up links to Race Tracker, dK, Sourcewatch, Kos and MyDD, and Wikipedia as I can get the time to fill them in.
