UPDATED: Edwards will help candidates YOU CHOOSE

Ever wanted to try your hand at being a campaign manager? Do you feel lucky?

Check it out.

This fall, John Edwards will headline fundraisers for two Democrats running for the House of Representatives who have been selected by the online community. You can choose among 47 candidates and districts targeted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Edwards is committed to helping as many candidates as possible before November. He has already raised $6.65 million for Democrats and attended fundraisers for strong congressional candidates in more than a dozen states this election cylce.

Just taking a quick glance, these are obviously highly competitive races from all over the country that could use a boost. Decide where you think Edwards' efforts will do the most good, and cast your vote. You seem to be able to pick as many as you want (although if you go with more than two, you would seem to be diluting your own votes).

At Gnomedex in Seattle last month, Edwards heard from bloggers and tech gurus who urged him to get the netroots involved. One suggestion was to allow some bloggers to travel with him on the campaign trail (assuming he decides to run, of course -- ha!) He appeared to be giving that strong consideration.

It looks like he's already trying to put some creative ideas to work to involve the online community.

Might as well cast your ballot. Heck, it's free. The deadline is Aug. 4.

UPDATE: There were 47 candidates to choose from, but now there are 48. In response to popular demand, the powers that be at the One America Committee added another candidate to your choices (I won't say which one, so as not to unfairly influence the vote, but it's easy to find out in the comments). That's pretty darn cool, and shows even more eagerness to be responsive to the netroots. Now, I have no doubt that Edwards is planning to swing by and help quite a number of Democrats this fall in competitive races (as he already has this year) beyond the two who win this vote, as time and circumstances allow. This innovative exercise in netroots participation just guarantees the two winners some fundraising assistance from one of the brightest rising stars in the Democratic Party. It really is a great idea. To quote Syndrome from The Incredibles: "I'm still geeking out about it." Remember, you have until next Friday to cast your vote(s).

I voted for:

Bruce Braley (IA-01) because he's a real Democrat:
Can Iowa Help Turn Congress Blue?

Lois Murphy (PA-06) because I liked her guest blog entry at OAC last month:
Thanks For Your Questions!
Why we need a fresh perspective in Washington

Charlie Melancon (LA-03) because of Katrina. Do I need to post a source for that one?

Re: Double Democracy: You can VOTE on candidates E (3.00 / 4)

Know for sure that Lampson's getting one of my votes, but I can't access the page due to cookie issues here on my work computer - will have to wait until I get home to decide!

Glad to see that Edwards is putting a new twist an old spin. Boxer, Warner, et al. have so far only been cutting checks for the winners of their "Whom to support next?" polls - making an actual appearance at a fundraiser is a brilliant idea, and really relies on his "star power" in the party.

Re: Double Democracy: You can VOTE on candidates E (3.00 / 1)

I went with my local boys, Lampson (TX-22) and Chet Edwards (TX-17).

Lampson - well, I've already given to his campaign, and anyone that can rub DeLay's face in it, deserves all the help he can get. =)

WRT TX-17 - Chet Edwards was one of the few (if not the only) Dems to keep his seat after the DeLay redistricting. In fact, he used to be my representative before that load of BS went down, so I kind of have a soft spot in my heart for him. At the time, he had Fort Hood in his district, and so he became very big on veterans' issues, rights, and affairs. Now, he's working to keep the VA hospital open in Waco. Many of my friends and family have served, so veterans' affairs are near and dear to me.

That being said - he does have a $1M advantage over his Republican challenger in the district, so perhaps it would be best to put the money elsewhere, but I gotta back my Texas Democrats - they're so few and far between anymore. *shrug*

Great to see that this proposal is generating such interest!

Re: Double Democracy: You can VOTE on candidates E (3.00 / 4)

I'm going to take a it of time running through the list.  Living in Connecticut, I feel like I should vote for Dianne Farrell, who is in my district.  Chris Murphy and Joe Courtney are also great candidates.

Other folks that I really like include Kirsten Gillibrand, Mary Jo Kilroy, Lois Murphy and the other Pennsylvania based candidates.

I wish there was some sort of preferential voting.  Something like, give every candidate 0 to 10 points depending on how much you like them.

An even bigger wish is that there were other candidates that aren't on the DCCC list available, such as folks like John McNerney, Francine Busby, Ted Ankrum, and John Courage.

Taking back Congress (3.00 / 2)

Here's who I voted for and why:

Heath Shuler (NC 11) to win a seat in my homestate! Shuler is going up against GOP incumbent Charles Taylor

Mary Jo Kilroy (OH 15) to win a seat and because she's very progressive on social issues (has won awards from the National Association of Social Workers).  Kilroy is going up against GOP incumbent Deborah Pryce

Patricia Madrid (NM 01) to win a seat---she's going up against GOP incumbent, friend to big oil companies,  Heather Wilson.

Re: choosing strategically (3.00 / 5)

There are two wrinkles to this one, it seems to me.

One is that, for good or ill, the list of candidates is confined to DCCC-backed contenders.
Don't grumble at me, grumble at Senator Edwards' campaign advisors, if you must.
On the other hand, think of it this way: there's probably considerable overlap between DCCC-favored districts, and campaign audiences where John Edwards would be a big draw. He is not the furthest left of the presidential candidates, on many issues.

The other is that it might seem wise, in choosing a candidate to back for this assistance, to rule out:

1)    districts where John Edwards isn't going to be a big sell;
2)    districts where the race is already pretty safe;
3)    districts where the Democrat running is too conservative to pull much support from the netroots or an Internet mailing list, so the vote would be wasted;
4)    districts where John Edwards has already made a campaign appearance, or is extremely likely to do so, whether we vote for that race or not.

Look over the list, and share your thoughts. Myself,

I'm inclined to rule out IN-09 and KY-04, based on the first criterion.
I'm inclined to rule out SD-AL and UT-02, on the second.
I'm inclined to rule out TX-17 and again KY-04, on the third criterion
I'm inclined to rule out NC-11, where Edwards will surely stump for Shuler no matter what, and IA-01, where he's already stumped for Braley.

I'm leaning toward Spratt, in SC-05, though he may be too secure to need the assistance, or Kellam, in VA-02, or Joe Donnelly, in IN-02.  But your thoughts?

by Christopher Walker on Thu Jul 27, 2006 at 03:44:47 PM EST

Re: afterthought, re: IN-02 (3.00 / 1)

My thinking of Donnelly is partly that that recent poll gives him sudden momentum, and now may be the time to pile on and push that with all the support we can muster. These moments pass, and there are 426 races (435 - 9 with no Democrat filed to run).

Interesting take. (3.00 / 2)

There are some candidates he's likely to help anyway, that's a good point. He's almost certainly going to be spending a lot more time in Iowa, Nevada and South Carolina.

I really like idea of campaigning for Lampson in Texas, because taking DeLay's former seat will get a lot of media attention.

Looking WAY down the road, campaigning in Ohio certainly can't hurt, either :)

Re: Interesting take. (none / 0)

Lampson is a definite on my list - taking away DeLay's seat would be a major win and yes, you are right - the media attention would  be great.

By the way, posted a comment to your diary earlier and it isn't appearing.  My first time here so who knows.

I am still mulling over the other options.  I really do not want to waste my vote if that is possible in the forthcoming election.

Re: choosing strategically (3.00 / 2)

Interesting criterion and I generally can't disagree although the fact that Edwards may have already appeared (or is likely to appear) for that candidate, probably shouldn't rule out that candidate. The candidate may need a lot of help--more than some of the others and is running in one of the critical, highly competitive races.

A close look at the 32 competitive races is warranted:

For Democrats, Many Verses, but No Chorus

Of 435 House seats, just 32 are in races considered competitive, compared with 110 at this time in 1994, according to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. Of those, 11 are held by Democrats and 21 by Republicans

Unless the political environment changes to make more Republican seats vulnerable, or more Republican incumbents retire before November, Democrats will have to hold on to all 11 of their competitive seats and win 15 of the 21 Republican seats in order to take back the House. (Representative Bernard Sanders of Vermont is considered a Democrat, even though he officially lists himself as an Independent.)

Re: choosing strategically (3.00 / 3)

This sort of reasoning leads me to focus on Pennsylvania or Ohio.  Lois Murphy, Joe Sestak, Patrick Murphy, and Chris Carney from Pennsylvania all have good grassroots support and are likely to be exciting races.

Likewise, over in Ohio, Mary Jo Kilroy has gotten a lot of grassroots support as has Nancy Skinner, whom I was surprised isn't listed.

Moving over to New Jersey, Linda Stender also has lots of support.

Each of these areas has fairly well developed blogging communities.

Into New York, Kirsten Gillibrand might be a particularly good choice.  She has lots of grassroots support, but is in an area where local blogging communities don't seem as strong.  (Andrew White may chime in and correct me if I'm wrong on that.)

One of the things that I like about the Edwards campaign is the efforts to build stronger online communities, and NY-20 might be a good place for them to focus.

Re: choosing strategically (3.00 / 2)

I would add to the list of disqualifiers candidates who already have tons of money.

Farrell (CT-04) is almost at $2 million already
Courtney (CT-02) is at $1.3 million
Murphy (CT-05) is at $1.2 million
Lois Murphy (PA-06) is well over $2 million
Sestak (PA-07) is nearing $1.2 million
Patrick Murphy (PA-08) is almost at $1 million
Cranley (OH-01) is over $1 million
Wilson (OH-06) is over $1.3 million
Kilroy (OH-15) is over $1 million
Ron Klein (FL-22) is over $2.6 million
Gillebrand (NY-20) is over $1.2 million

etc. etc.

Some of those are expensive districts, sure...but if you're gonna give a shot in the arm to a campaign, might as well make it a BIG shot in the arm.  Find an underfunded candidate who deserves the shot.

voting for Edwards appearance (3.00 / 1)

I just voted for Burner, Madrid, Sestak, Shuler, and Stender, all of whom are distinguished by the loathesomness of their opponents.

But where is Hodes in NH-02?  Is he not on the DCCC target list yet?  You would think that JE would have a personal interest in visiting NH for a campaign appearance...

by DaveMB on Thu Jul 27, 2006 at 03:47:22 PM EST

No doubt, Edwards will be in NH campaigning... (3.00 / 2)

...for Democrats, regardless of how this vote turns out. I see the results of this vote as a BONUS in addition to the other fund-raisers he's already planning to attend.

Re: Double Democracy: Edwards will help candidates (none / 0)

Can you really vote for as many as you want? that seems weird.

by Lucas O'Connor on Thu Jul 27, 2006 at 04:43:41 PM EST

Re: Double Democracy: Edwards will help candidates (3.00 / 2)

Not that weird -- it's basically approval voting, which leaves it up to the voter where to draw the line between the set voted for and the set voted against.

From my standpoint, if I vote for one then my vote is only relevant if my candidate is near the top two.  If I can vote for several, I have a greater chance of influencing the result, though I give up the chance to influence a decision among my choices.

It's not intrinsically unfair to give a single voter more than one choice -- note that voting for everyone is the same as voting for no one.  Approval voting is probably not the best way to make this decision, but I like it better than "vote for one".  From JE's point of view, it increases the likely number of people who will have voted for the eventual winner.

Of course it would be better if the web site explained the procedure.  But in any case the main purpose of the "poll" is to gather email addresses for the campaign (which I don't mind as I'm already an Edwards fan).

Re: Double Democracy: Edwards will help candidates (none / 0)

i would be fine with voting for a certain number, but having the option to vote for all but one seems kinda gross.  That's just me though, and it isn't that big of a deal.

Re: Double Democracy: Edwards will help candidates (none / 0)

Perfectly sensible, if your sentiment about the field is "anybody is better than X" and you want to vote for whomever turns out to be X's competition.  It has the same advantages and disadvantages as voting for one candidate -- it's sure to help that candidate, but it's relevant to the final outcome only if that candidate is a contender.

Choices with the Greatest Impact (3.00 / 1)

I agree with the comments above that are looking for districts where Edwards would have the greatest impact.  So:  No incumbents, places where Edwarda would have appeal, and no candidate who already has $1 mil on hand.

So my Choices:

1) Harry Mitchell (AZ-5)  This race is winnable with good funding, and Mitchell needs more to beat J.D. Blowhard.

2) Chris Carney (PA-10)  A Very winnable race and a little money goes a long way in this district.

3) Phil Kellam (VA-2)  A race that has just gotten on the radar, where Edwards would defiinitely be an attraction.

In each of these an Edwards fundraiser would be a BIG help.

NC-08 Larry Kissell Should Be on the List (3.00 / 2)

Come home and give Larry Kissell some help in NC-08!  The district is just one county away from your hometown - Robbins.

http://www.larrykissell.com/

Larry can win this race vs Robin Hayes.  Larry is a teacher - and former textile worker - running against a textile company heir.

Gen. Clark is helping out in Arkansas - can you come home, too?

Done, JRE and OAC are actually listening to the netroots and acting on our ideas. Now that is impressive!

I'd hoped he would have been on there too(actually Edwards seems to have initially just taken his list from the DCCC). Now that he his, I'm rushing off to add him to my list of now 4.

Re: Double Democracy: Edwards will help candidates (3.00 / 2)

I went with Patty Wetterling and Zach Space.

The state DFL party sums Patty up best:

One of the candidates in contention for this honor is Minnesota's own DFL-endorsed Sixth District Congressional candidate, Patty Wetterling.  She is in a very tight race with Republican Michele Bachmann, who has relied on a parade of GOP insiders like Dick Cheney, Dennis Hastert, and Karl Rove to throw high-dollar fundraisers to bring in campaign cash.

Success (3.00 / 2)

I'm happy to announce that I just spoke with someone from the Kissell campaign and the Edwards campaign called and have added Larry Kissell to the list of possible candidates.

Many of you probably saw gregflynn's piece here on MyDD, but BlueNC.com members fanned out on OAC, MyDD, BlueNC and anywhere else to have our voices heard.  Did it make a difference?  I think it did.  It just goes to show that we can't sit around and take what's handed to us.

I happen to think the world of John Edwards.  I supported his last candidacy and will probably support him whole-heartedly this time.  That didn't stop me from shouting out when I felt he was being shortsighted.  (I know...it wasn't him personally)

I think it speaks volumes for the campaign that they listened and acted so quickly.

Re: Success for all of us (3.00 / 2)

Never heard of bluenc myself, heard about Kissell from DKos (I'm in MI, not NC).  So I also had requested in threads that Edwards consider Kissell.

I don't think it was short-sightedness though. I think Edwards is doing this in affiliation with the DCCC and they had come up with the 47 based on their "Top 10 Endangered Incumbents" and "Red2Blue" lists (of the most competitive races).

Still, I'm glad to see that the new interactive politics is alive and well at the One America Committee (no top-down approach there, this proves it).

Re: UPDATED: Edwards will help candidates YOU CHOO (3.00 / 2)

I'm very impressed that Edwards added Larry Kissell. Before that happened, I wrote a piece blasting him (mildly) for bending over a bit too much for Rahm Emanuel. I thought it was classy of Edwards to offer "Democratic candidates" in Arizona and Nevada where there are hot primaries in the offing. I also found it stupid of Edwards to swallow Emanuel's bullshit about FL-13 where the DCCC corporate shill will probably lose, just like their candidate did in CA-11 (notice no McNerney on this list by the way; Rahmy's still sore?). That was the point of my Edwards story today; if he wants to be president, he needs to pay better attention and not blindly trust craven hacks like Emanuel.

Re: One America Votes (IN-2) (none / 0)

Many thanks to Mr. Walker for his support of Joe Donnelly in IN-2.  Here is another reason why a major league fundraiser, such as one with Sen. Edwards, would make a great impact in this race.  While Joe is currently ahead according to two polls, Chris Chocola not only has a personal wealth of anywhere between $35 and 50 million, he is such a valued crony of the Bush White House he is sure to receive major backing from the White House and the national Republican machine.  This is precisely the type of race that needs a fundraiser such as the one Edwards proposes as well as the accompanying media coverage.  We need to stay on Chocola and keep hammering away with our message.  The media hit and the funds raised would help Joe do that.  Please consider Joe Donnelly when you vote.  Keep in mind also that if only 1% of the money sent to a big netroots race such as Busby (CA), Hackett (OH) or Lamont (CT) were sent to a campaign like Joe Donnelly's, the impact would be tremendous.
