Blogosphere Eve Thread

Well, I'm off to see Al Gore. The ticket contest is over as well. Here is a round-up thread for this afternoon:
  • Senator Menendez has launched his campaign blog. I imagine you might see a familiar certain someone doing a lot of the entries.

  • In light of my Start Trek Post below, I have been alerted to an older article by Paul Rosenberg: Star Trek Socialism.

  • Atrios has a column up in the LA Times on the CT-Sen race. Great stuff. Whatever his snarky, glib demeanor on his blog, I just want to say that in person Atrios is one of the most reserved, thoughtful, and brilliant people I have ever met.

  • Also in CT-Sen, Quinnipiac is coming out with a new poll on Thursday. Stay tuned, but with Lieberman's huge spending, I do not anticipate too much change.

  • Scared Lieberman has no volunteer ground game, moles in his camp and will damage other Connecituct Democrats in order to save himself. From The Hotline:
    Joseph Lieberman is hoping fear where work where persuasion has failed. Life on the ropes has caused the three term incumbent to call in Washington pro, Tom Lindenfeld to put together an organization to call, identify and inspire Lieberman primary voters for the August 8th showdown.

    The theme of a Saturday conclave of Greater Hartford Democratic town committee chairs was that if Lieberman loses the primary he will hurt all other Democratic candidates by running as an independent in November. The message was clear: help him now or your favorites suffer in November.

    The meeting was held at Congressman John Larson's political office. Larson wants locals to think the Democrats will take over the House if three challengers in Connecticut win. He would also get some credit for those wins, having looked foolish with his emphasis on an unsuccessful 2004 Dem challenger in eastern Connecticut.

    The response of the crowd of about 50 could not have been encouraging, though Lendenfeld impressed with his plan. Still, there was much resentment about Lieberman's support of the war in Iraq and, now, threat to bolt party if he falls short on 8/8. Reactions ranged from support to nods to hostility. Most local leaders are far more interested in the gubernatorial race with its tangible rewards in patronage and prestige.
    B<r> One of Lieberman's problems became evident in aftermath of meeting: lots of local leaders are quietly opposing him and were eager to share tales of the event. Plan is to hire workers to make calls and hit the pavement. Fears are growing that Lieberman will have no chance of winning in a low turnout. Twenty percent, the number batted about, is thought to be fatal to his chances. The three term incumbent's people concede that he has no effective organization of his own. He has brought in a pro to gin up his ground game with only three weeks left and several million dollars to spend. Lamont manager Tom Swan, an organizing legend in Connecticut, has put together a formidable machine for the challenger. It had a test run in the spring when it prepared to petition Lamont's way onto the primary ballot, which became moot after his strong convention showing.

    Lieberman needs a pro like Lindenfeld . His camp has been infiltrated by hostile Democratic officials who are surprised they get invited to his meetings when they have no intention of doing any work for him, let alone giving him their votes.
    Blogosphere day is tomorrow. I'll give you one guess as to who the beneficiary will be.
This is an open thread.

Counter Point to Star Trek Socialism (none / 0)

I ran across this at StarDestroyer.net a few years ago and I figured in the interests of stirring up discussion I'd repost the link.

Bascially he claims that from what we see in the show there is an abolition of property rights, no personal transportation, state control of communication, much progress in elimination of religion and traditional families, state seizure of industry, everyone is forced to work.

http://www.stardestroyer.net/Empire/Essa ys/Trek-Marxism.html

Uh and also to geek out though they just gave the DS9 episode on TV not long ago, the one where the guy says of the Federation "no one is allowed to leave paradise" or something like that.

"Angry left" (none / 0)

Note how the LA Times headline writers kept the "angry left" meme going with the headline "Why the Left Is Furious at Lieberman".

They just can't quit.

Bush: 'Alpha Male on the Cruise Ship'

By Robert Parry, May 18, 2006
http://www.consortiumnews.com/2006/05170 6.html

At a joint White House press conference May 16 with Australian Prime Minister John Howard, as the two men stood side by side, Bush slipped in a couple of zingers about Howard's bald head and supposed homeliness.

Bush joshed, "Somebody said, `You and John Howard appear to be so close, don't you have any differences?' And I said, `yes, he doesn't have any hair.'"

Getting a round of laughs from reporters, Bush moved on to his next joke: "That's what I like about John Howard," Bush said. "He may not be the prettiest person on the block, but when he tells you something you can take it to the bank."

Howard played the role of gracious guest, smiling and saying nothing in response to the disparaging comments about his physical appearance.

Gee, Chris, whomever could you be referring to?

I'm pretty excited to get blogging again. Total withdrawals...

Jeez, that's some turnaround from Xpatriated Texan, isn't it?

It's funny, though, how he calls it "Swift Boating" when Republicans launch the same attacks he facilitated in his day.

That guy was a real jackass.

At least he's out of your hair now, I guess.

Nevada primary? (none / 0)

I just heard the DNC is leaning towards Nevada as an early primary state.  Does this strike anyone else as an idiotic idea?

I can just imagine the town hall meetings...on the Strip and questions about sex workers' rights to unionize on every national news broadcast. If we're trying to even talk to values voters, this is sure a backwards way to do so.

I heard they're meeting this weekend to decide.  The boneheadedness of the national committee never fails to surprise, but this is pretty dumb, even for them if they decide to go through with it.

by kateb on Tue Jul 18, 2006 at 06:11:28 PM EST

is it any more ridiculous then... (none / 0)

ethanol and corn subsidies?

I for one would love to hear about sex workers' right to unionize.

look at the overton window, we have to progress society at some point.

Besides Nevada is a swing state... a very CLOSE swing state.

I see what you are saying about "values voters" (or prudes!), but I think the idea has merit.

Drinking Liberally (3.00 / 1)

didn't want to muck up the actual thread with semi-trivialities, but what's the drinking liberally schedule up in the bay area? I want to get up there for a few days at some point, and would prefer to time it with drinking liberally.

Re: Blogosphere Eve Thread (none / 0)

I know this is absolutely idiotic and horrible, but in my defense, I am only 15 and I wrote it this morning at 2 A.M.  Critiques appreciated and requested.

* 3 tax brackets:
       15% $20,000-$140,000
       25% $140,001-$260,000
       40% $260,001+

 First $20,000 of income is not taxed.  Capital gains are taxed at the same rate as your income for the year.  You gain a $5000 tax credit for each children you have, up to 3.  Repealing of the AMT would be required.

* Medicare/Medicaid

 Elimination of Medicare/Medicaid in favour of a streamlined, efficient single-payer system.  Before Medicare  Part D, Medicare was infinitely more efficient than HMO and Investors involving overhead.  Apply that same minimal overhead philosophy, while extending coverage for all necessary procedures and regular check-ups for all.

* Amtrak/U.S. Postal Service

 Get these two companies financially solvent and spin them off.  The Government does not need to be controlling industries that the private sector can handle much more efficiently.

* Military Streamlining

 Increase the efficiency of the Army by reducing the number of superfluous organizations; merge all the spy agencies into the Department of Homeland Security, as well as adding FEMA in.  Merge all three branches of the Army into one.  Demand accountability on all military contracts, and make sure that all bids for a contract are considered.  We can no longer allow corporations like Halliburton to take advantage of the government.

* Environmental Reform

 Adopt the Kyoto Accords.  Make clean-burning coal plants mandatory. Support the use of alternative-fuel by giving companies a tax-break (not sure how much at the moment) for the use of such.  Require that Federal buildings get at least 10% of their energy from alternative sources (non-fossil fuel), as well as meet Energy Star requirements.

* Education Reform

 Don't know enough here to fix this.  =(

* Economic Reform

 Dissolve NAFTA and CAFTA.  Push for reform within the World Bank for Free Trade reform, in that minimum standard of living codes are set, and that standardised factory conditions are present.  While Free Trade capitalism is a remarkable power, we can not let corporatism defame humanity.  We must be careful, rather than let it go unbridled.

* Business Tax Reform

 Need some help here as well.

* Overall

 I know this was random ranting, but these are just some general ideas I had.  Hope that you all appreciated them!
