The Meaning of Tester's Victory: A Win Against D.C. For the Rest of Us

bumped - Matt

The winds of change - they are a-blowin' hard out here in the heartland, no matter how much Washington, D.C. pretends they aren't. Tonight, in a major upset, populist Democratic State Senate President Jon Tester crushed his primary opponents, becoming the Democratic nominee against vulnerable incumbent Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT). Tester, a farmer from Big Sandy, ran against the Washington Establishment, ignoring those who said he couldn't beat State Auditor John Morrison (D) - the candidate that Democratic Party powerbrokers in Washington tried to anoint.

In fairness, I think both Tester and Morrison are good Democrats. But, as I saw when I was at Tester's announcement speech last year, and I learned in talking with Tester during the campaign, this is a guy who clearly and unabashedly represents the populist wing of his party (I tried as best as I could to publicly stay out of the primary out of deference to the state party that didn't want to further enflame the already divisive primary battle). His victory will likely send yet more shockwaves through the increasingly insulated and isolated Democratic Establishment in Washington.

That Establishment has either refused to take basic, concrete positions on the key issues of the day like Iraq, or worse, has high-profile factions publicly insulting middle-class voters, such as when former Clintonites on Wall Street insulted those Democrats who are trying to reform America's sellout trade policy.

But as I have written before, Tester - and other successful Democrats running this year - are doing exactly the opposite. Back in November, I noted how Tester rejected Washington's advice, and took a strong position on the Iraq War. A few weeks back, I also noted how on critical economic issues like trade. These are positions that put him squarely at odds with the national Democratic Party and the Big Money interests that control Washington, but that put him in sync with voters in Montana and throughout the heartland. Put another way, he made the fight against Big Money's hostile takeover of our government a central theme in his legislative career and in his primary campaign - and he was, to the great shock of Washington insiders, handsomely rewarded by voters.

There are a lot of lessons to learn from this primary. First and foremost, when Democrats take strong positions and courageously stand up to the powers that be, they are rewarded. In the era of money-drenched, consultant-dominated politics, voters are desperate for authenticity - and the best way to show you are authentic is to reject the prepackaged talking points from corporate-funded Washington front-groups like the Democratic Leadership Council and actually stand with ordinary people out here in the heartland.

Secondly, the era of television advertising totally and completely dominating politics is over, at least in primaries in smaller states. In such races, candidates can meet almost everyone who is going to cast a vote. That means retail politics, field, free media, online organizing and word of mouth become priceless. Early on in this primary, I praised Tester in the American Prospect for seriously embracing the netroots and painting a contrast between himself, the outsider, and his opponent, more of an insider. Over the course of the next many months, he took that to the next level.

This means that in the future, as the battle for the soul of the Democratic Party (and by extension against the hostile takeover of our government by Big Money interests) rages on between populists and elitists, small-state primaries are going to be the high-profile battlegrounds where our side - the small "d" democrats in the Democratic Party - are going to crash the gates.

Finally, to those who derided Brian Schweitzer's way of running campaigns in 2004 and labeled him as a fluke, Tester's victory puts that to rest. Schweitzer, as we see, was the sharp tip of the spear, ripping through the thin veneer that Democratic Party insiders have clung to through election loss after election loss after election loss. Schweitzer - and now Tester (the guy who carried Schweitzer's agenda through the legislature) - are showing those in their state and throughout the nation that the way to really be a political leader is to reject the D.C. insiders who preach caution; ignore the naysayers who seek to turn politics into bland ad campaigns for soap; and embrace an in-your-face politics that tells people you are dead serious about cleaning up our government.

Tonight is a terrible night for Conrad Burns, not only because one of his primary challengers got almost a quarter of GOP votes, but because Democrats now have Jon Tester carrying the flag against him. Burns barely eeked out a victory last time against Schweitzer - then an unknown first-time candidate. Now, severely damaged by his connections to high-profile corruption scandals, Burns is facing a Schweitzer-style populist - but one who is better-known than Schweitzer was during his dark horse Senate bid in 2000. It's Tester Time - and that means Burns' days in the Senate are numbered.

This puts a smile on my face a mile wide. I live far away from Montana but I gave to Tester, and I am enjoying this so much.

BTW David, I have purchased your book and I am reading it currently, so far it is the best political book I have read in years, nice job, and hopefully I can get the night off when you are at the book signing in South Hadley Mass.

"Win against DC" is just plain silly (none / 0)

I love Montana, think Tester deserves big kudos, but in terms of the framing of a "win against DC"....

Gimme a break.

Seriously, can the rest of the country take some friggin responsibility and stop whining about DC?

Don't get me wrong -- there's a lot of problems with the Democratic leadership.

But I think it's way too easy for Dems around the country to assume that things would magically change if only they could replace Pelosi/Reid/Rahm/Schumer/whoever.

The problem isn't DC or the beltway, the problem is the Democratic Party. It's not like Democrats around the country are being controlled by psionic brain waves from DC insider empaths.

And whining about DC is 90% a work-avoidance device -- it's much easier to slam these leaders than to build a stronger party from the ground up.  And that is what will really need to happen if we want to start winning elections.

These leaders aren't grown from pods in DC -- they come from across America.  And across America is where the problem lies -- not just in 10 square miles along the Potomac.

So make a decision -- keep whining about DC, or kick yourself in the ass and do something.   As far as I can tell, Tester did the latter.  And that's why he is celebrating one hell of a victory.

Re: "Win against DC" is just plain silly (none / 0)

I agree with the bottom-up rebuild idea.  I see people everywhere repeat it constantly,  to the point of wanting to scream.

My idea of how to rebuild from the ground up is just quit recruiting, promoting, & funding lawyers for every public office.  I find it really hard to understand or believe people that come from a profession that is trained to sit squarely on the fence.

I want to believe you but ... (none / 0)

David,

Do you have evidence that Tester's way of winning a primary will translate to the general election?  Should he swing back towards the center now, as so often happens after this sort of primary victory?

Thanks,
z

by zabouti on Wed Jun 07, 2006 at 08:03:23 AM EST

It's a matter of perspective (3.00 / 1)

It's apparent to me that Tester has been (all along)  at the center. It's just that the reactionaries in control of the republican party have managed to shift that perceptual ideological scale with the help of our lazy and incompetent media - "gee, the republicans say they're moderates so they must be..." Let's not adopt or repeat republican memes here.

I'm not repeating anybody's "memes".  I'm asking - and wanting - evidence, ok, actual victories.  I'm trying to decide which kind of Democrats I should support, not which kind of Republican.

Re: I asked for evidence (none / 0)

how will we know what approach works unless assumptions are tested? we know right now what doesn't work- even if you are unconvinced that this will work- I would hope that if you are about finding out what works- you would be open to seeing what happens rather than- as is often the case - assuming that the only way to win is to move away from ones values and core character.

Re: I want to believe you but ... (3.00 / 3)

What Tester needs to do is keep being Tester. He shouldn't follow the route of the guy he just beat by 25% pts. Did you notice Sirota's focus on the concept of authenticity, that is worth far more in political capital than swinging to the center could ever yield.

He won because he is the real deal, he would be foolish to water himself down.

He's going to be getting lots of "advice" from the DC insiders who were backing Morrison, I hope he listens politely but keeps on keeping on as Tester.

Not quite bumper-sticker size, but a good saying nonetheless.

Re: The Meaning of Tester's Victory: A Win Against (3.00 / 0)

Politicians who swing back to the center (on either side) reveal themselves to be pandering liars. No wonder turn out is so low. When I ask people who don't vote, why the don't vote, they don't say "It's too hard to register", or "The time isn't convenient.", or "I hate punch cards". They say, "They're all liars" or "They're all crooked."

When real candidates like Dean, Cegelis, and Busby come along, the public can't distinguish them from the horde of snake oil salesmen.

Re: The Meaning of Tester's Victory: A Win Against (3.00 / 1)

There are 4.5 million reasons for Bilbray's victory.  Sorry to oversimplify this but the GOP won its "Safe Republican" seat at considerable cost. Politically $4.5 million for the RNC and RCCC  which are both  having fundraising problems (the DNC and DCCC have benn trouncing them or pulling even in the several quarters) is a pyrric victory at best.

I want to win, I want a progressive party and I want election day to be a mandate BUT I refuse to do the ideological twist everytime the other guy wins a race by run too the left, right, as an insider, an outsider.  We needed more votes.  We needed to a GOTV program that starts with ensuring our voters  have properly registered and our out of town vters have absentee ballots mailed.

I agree - but you can't get to those points if you can't even decide, for example, whether you  w ill even run on a platform or on character to get people out there to do the volunteering to achieve thsoe ends

Schumer and the beltway dems are already trying to horn in here.  Just got an email from the DSCC asking for money to "help" Tester.  I sure hope Tester can win without Schumer's "help."  Make sure to give any $ you want to Tester directly or through ActBlue, NOT the DSCC!

Here's some hard evidence of the Dem surge in Montana - almost 106,000 votes in the Dem Senate primary compared to about 94,000 in the GOP primary.

Burns is in deep trouble!

Debra Bowen (3.00 / 2)

Don't forget a similar victory in California.  Deb Bowen, DFA-List candidate for Secretary, started out far behind Deborah Ortiz.  by last week, she was pulling almost even in the polls.  Yesterday, she won with 60%.

It is critically important to elect knowledgable grassroots-supported election reformers to Secretary's offices all around the country.  This is a great start.

Truth - That's all I want (3.00 / 1)

Folks,

Swing to the center or remain himself?  What a silly outdated concept.

I can't get "Truth" anywhere.  There is no one place that 'sells' truth about anything.  If I want it, I have to search it out, read the arguments, compare the pros and cons to even get clue one of what the truth is.

I don't want spin.  I don't want what some consultant THINKS I want to hear.  I want truth.  Period.

The best way a candidate can speak truth to me is by being him or herself.  Tell me exactly where you stand on the issues.  Give me clear cut lines where there is no ambiguity.  If your information changes and you need to change a previously held position because of new information, I can live with that.  I may not like it, but I can live with it.  Why?  Because I change my opinions and positions as new information becomes available.  So do lots of people that live in the real world.

Be yourself Mr./Ms Candidate.  DO NOT try to be a little bit of something for everyone. That's what disgusts me.  Don't pander to some mythical 'base'.

Speak the truth - as YOU see it - every waking hour of every day and that will show me that you are genuine.  And I'll be attracted to you and your cause.

Simple in concept.  Oh so difficult in implementation.

Re: The Meaning of Tester's Victory: A Win Against (none / 0)

David,

I love Tester and all, but I'm not ready to crow yet. We need heads on pikes, and not the Democratic beltway heads that you love to collect, but Republican ones.

The Ohio political landscape was shattered because of the heavy handed tactics in the Senate race. How is Montana doing? I don't hear you talking much anymore about your guy Sherrod Brown now that he's got the nomination. I hear even less about Mike DeWine. Way back when it was two posts a day. One can only hope that there will come a time when you devote this much energy to defeating Republicans.

It's funny how many of the people that I was once sparring with over Sherrod Brown are now telling me in private that he has no chance of winning. That his staff doesn't know what it's doing, and the rest of the ticket is distancing themselves from him. Some of the people telling me this used to work on his campaign. Me, I think it's B.S. I think that Sherrod needs a jump on getting this thing on track. I think that DeWine is very beatable.

Crow all you want, David. We're busy putting Humpty Dumpty back together again. Wanna help? Maybe y'all can talk to Armstrong and Kos about this when you meet.

As Sirota pointed out:

(I tried as best as I could to publicly stay out of the primary out of deference to the state party that didn't want to further enflame the already divisive primary battle)

You know I'm a huge Hackett fan, but I was a Tester supporter for the same reasons before I ever heard of the good Major.

As for putting Humpty Dumpty back together again, the picture of Hackett walking around the state party dinner with a Sherrod Brown sticker on his ass almost broke my ribs I was laughing so hard.

The lesson is clear, if Tester had listened to DC and pulled out six months ago, we would be stuck with a crappy candidate in Montana who was doomed to fail. In Ohio, they took it a step further with the swiftboating and now you all are praying for a Democratic surge great enough to overcome your crappy nominee.

I'm glad Montana is a state where Tester could easily spread his message despite having little cash. But it is a bittersweet victory, because it reminds me of how perfect the senate picture would look right now were it not for the actions of the DSCC and Brown's staff.

Many of the folks on my block in Columbus have decided they will not vote for Brown as a result of the Hackett fiasco. That's a small sample, I know, but it is indicative of the problem Brown is going to have in November.
