Evening Round-Up Thread

Well the moving is all done, and now I have to shower and head off to a ward meeting. I didn't end up with enough time / energy to go purchase a new cell phone today. Liz is gonna kill me. I hope you guys don't kill me for relying on another round-up thread in lieu of real analysis (what's this, my third straight round up thread now?)
  • Subscription only Roll Call notes that there is no precedent for the DSCC or Democratic leadership to support an independent bid for an incumbent defeated in a primary:
Although the Senate has twice before seen incumbents launch Independent re-election bids following a primary defeat -- including, ironically, an unsuccessful 1970 run by the late Sen. Thomas Dodd (D-Conn.), the father of Connecticut's other Democratic Senator, Chris Dodd -- neither of those instances seems likely to provide a precedent for Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Charles Schumer ( N.Y.), according to Associate Senate Historian Don Ritchie.
Meanwhile, in the Washington Post, Harold Meyerson blasts Lieberman's dislike of democracy.

  • Bill Frist thinks that the minimum wage should only be raised if teenagers can't get abortions in states where conservative terrorists haven't already shut down family planning clinics. Bob Geiger has the details.

  • In the midst of the many pointless rsolutions being released on Iraq, a real victory was achieved in the House. By a vote of 376-50, the House voted against stripping a provision in the Defense Appropriations bill that prevents funds from being used to establish permanent military bases in Iraq. Note that Mark Kennedy, who is running for Senate in Minnesota, voted in favor of using funds to establish permanent military bases in Iraq. If that does not become a campaign issue, Amy Klobuchar should fire her entire staff. Mark Kennedy wants to occupy Iraq forever.

  • Ipac discusses Verizon's attempt to make an end run around Net Neutrality. Seriously, if anyone here has a Verizon phone, they should change service.

  • David Sirota has a new post on a poll that shows huge support for public financing of campaigns. Personally, I'd like to see a voucher system where people get something like $250 in coupons they can donate to whatever campaigns they wish. That way, you have public financing and personal choice.

  • Republicans stand by their principles and delay renewal of the Voting Rights Act.
This is an open thread.

Lieberman just finished informing the Senate that he opposes both the Reed/Levin amendment and the Kerry/Feingold amendment for redeploying the troops in Iraq.  I hope the Lamont campaign has the transcript.

Re: Evening Round-Up Thread (3.00 / 1)

I always had a ho-hum opinion of Lieberman.  I never thought about him one way or another, except that I thought he was milquetoast.

However, lately, I am really truly beginning to HATE him.  Just the sight of his smug, wrinkled face makes me want to puke.

I almost wish Lamont wasn't rich so I could give to him.  My philosophy is that my money is better spent giving to candidates who need the money.  Lamont can spend whatever it takes of his own money.

McCain is defining Obama, and Obama is neither defining himself, nor McCain. This is awful.

Casey has an 18-pt lead over Santorum, according to the latest Quinnipiac poll. The race stands at 52-34, compared to 49-36 in May.

Re: Evening Round-Up Thread (none / 0)

My Verizon phone contract runs out this August (I refused to accept the 2 year contract, went for a 1-year instead). I've long since decided that I would never bother with another contract-based provider ever again. This is my next phone.

"It's not cutting and running, it's getting the war on terror BACK ON TRACK, by securing the victory in Afghanistan, focusing on bin Laden, and getting our troops out from the middle of a civil war. Our presence in Iraq is LOSING the war on terror, not winning it..."

Jim Talent (R-MO) is now on the Senate floor defending Bush's policy in Iraq.  I hope the McCaskill campaign obtains the transcript of his speech this evening.

Re: Evening Round-Up Thread (none / 0)

I blogged about that Verizon-Vonage bullying ploy, and it got picked up by the Yahoo! Finance Vonage message board, sending dozens of Vonage investors into a tizzy.  I hope I didn't move the market too much today!  For a fun diversion, pick any stock and go to the Yahoo! Finance message board for it.  Hours of entertainment.

As a Vonage subscriber who left Verizon to do it, I wholeheartedly support giving the ol' finger to the "can you hear me now" crowd.

Can we remove Ciro from the ACTBLUE page and replace him with Jack Carter?

Re: Evening Round-Up Thread (none / 0)

He's already removed.  The money totals at the top are all time, not restricted to the candidates currently featured.

Re: Evening Round-Up Thread (none / 0)

I understand that Klobuchar is the presumed nominee in Minnesota, but I'm always disappointed to see her mentioned without any reference to her primary opponent, Dr. Ford Bell. Bell support's Murtha's timetable for bringing the troops home, Bell is consistently competitive with Kennedy in Zogby's polls, and there have been no head-to-head polls between Klobuchar and Bell, so no one really knows if Klobuchar's DFL endorsement will lead to a primary victory.

Chuck Schumer and the DSCC have busted their butts on Klobuchar's behalf, and her campaign rhetoric is predictably non-specific on most key issues. Typically, the DSCC approach of taking the air out of the room (no real debates, no meaningful joint appearances) has resulted in this primary race all but disappearing from the local and national news.

Dr. Bell is waging a low-profile clean campaign. No mudslinging, but a steady progressive message to bring the troops home. Dr. Bell is also focused on working for single payer universal health care, and is closely aligned with the progressive agenda.

Please make a note of Dr. Bell's campaign and try to "include him in" when you talk about the Minnesota Senate race. The state that elected Jesse Ventura should not be assumed safe for anyone, and lest we forget, Paul Wellstone was a dark horse when he first ran.
